Republican Monkey Business in the 38th
While the endorsement by Julie Butcher of 38th District Assembly Candidate Jim Alger was in the final works, we heard rumors that Mitchell Englander - Chief of Staff for frequent Alger opponent and City Councilman Greig Smith - was allegedly doing his level best to the very last minute to get Butcher to back off the endorsement. This old dead Mayor wonders why the Republican Chief of Staff for a Republican Councilman would even bother to meddle in a Democratic primary contest?Probably because the 38th has been Republican going back the days of former Assemblywoman Marian LaFollette - a foot solider in the Reagan Revolution. The District, once a solid GOP bastion, has seen only token Democratic activity until now.
Tthough half the District covers the slightly more conservative bedroom community of Santa Clarita, both halves are finding demographics shifting registration more and more to the blue side. Indeed, registration is nearly split.
Probably also because Englander and his boss Smith don't really like Alger very much.
The likely Republican nominee for the seat is Santa Clarita Valley Councilman and former Mayor, Cameron Smythe. Smythe, a hardcore rock ribbed Republican who once worked for for State Senator Pete Knight. He might have trouble holding onto the more libertarian elements of the base with a moderate, pro-choice, pro-gun and pro-business Democrat like Alger in the race. Smythe- whose day job is being a spokesflack for Shell Oil - is so to the right, he makes this old, dead Republican caveman Mayor look like Jimmy Carter. Well, that might be stretching it. No matter what, this race is going to be a lot of fun!

I am not sure about this time Sammy, but if those morons at CD 12 would just do their fucking jobs Alger would be the least of their concerns.
Instead, they choose to run around City Hall bad mouthing people (and many more than Alger) and acting like they are King Tut.

Phil Knight was one of the greatest assholes in American politics. His son comes out to him, and what does he do? He launches a "marriage protection" bill that was nothing more than crude gay-baiting. That's a loving father right there, kids.

I've sort of been left by both the Republican and Democratic parties. I'm an old fashioned Republican - pro-limited government, pro-low taxes, pro-strong defense, pro-individual freedom. I'm pro-choice, pro-gun, pro-gay rights and pro-Wal-Mart.
I guess that would make me a Libertarian but I have little interest in ferret rights.

The Police Commission members, who seem intent, after two consecutive rulings against the suggestion of the Police Chief, to destroy officers' morale and encourage officers to take target practice for criminals. Why do they think young men and women should become Los Angeles Police Officers, and what are they doing to encourage the department to recruit and retain the best officers around? Cop-haters, some of whom have the ear of the community, who tell us we are not doing enough, but also ask us, as Reverend Tony Muhammad did, to leave their neighborhoods alone. Does the experience of Compton, where there isn't enough law enforcement and the murder rate has skyrocketed, really seem like a good solution to anyone? And finally, Mayor Villaraigosa, who congratulates his handpicked Police Commission for a "job well done," even as it destroys an officer's career, and undermines the city's own police chief. The mayor has to take a hard look at his priorities. The community leaders who applauded yesterday's Police Commission ruling aren't going to be applauding so loudly as a demoralized, underpaid and undervalued police force can no longer retain the officers it needs to keep the City of Los Angeles safe.

FYI - Englander takes credit for stopping Julie Butchers endorsement as well as about 8 City Council members. If Butcher is any scale, here comes the LA City Council for Alger. It would only be fair, Smyhe has the Santa Clarita Council.

Might be a good move. Zine could pull all those cops in Santa Clarita. Most of the 38th is in his CD so he's known there. Could definitely give Cameron a run for his money.

Is it true that Englander is being investigated by the FBI for using his city hall office to run a side business that funnels city contracts to his buddies?
The unny thing is Julie Butcher has not endorsed Jim Alger. Sehe wrote him a check with explict instructions not to use it as an endorsement. What the heck it just goes in with the other seven reportable donations Alger has received in the last six months and the loans and his family gave to himself and then repaid. Bottom line C.O.H. $3,673.32. Which you would never be able to tell as he does not report electronically.
Really? I have to say that I found her quotes to the contrary in the press release pretty convincing. I guess we'll be hearing from her soon if those quotes were made up, eh?
That is now the fourth endorsement that this same moron challenged saying that someone gave a check "with instructions not to include as an endorsement"... and yet each one ends up being an endorsement.
I think Alger's opposition is getting desperate.
