What's Up In CD12?

Greig Smith represents the North San Fernando Valley based District 12. He worked for years for his predecessor, Councilman

Hal Bernson, before getting elected to the seat himself when Bernson retired.

He's also an LAPD Reserve Officer. He gained some notoriety a couple of years ago when patrolling the streets with fellow Councilman and retired LAPD motorcycle officer Dennis Zine when they answered the call of a theft in progress at Valley car dealership Galpin Ford. Zine and Smith wrestled the perpetrator to the ground until backup officers arrived. The whole event gained some snickers given that both Councilmen are in their late 50s and that during the whole fracas Smith aide Mitchell Englander was on hand shooting photos.

So - what's up in CD12?

Guys, you're not getting it; there's only one CD in LA, and it is CD 14.

Anything else is too much like reality.

Smith is alright so far. Hell, after being in City Hall for so long you would think he would have it down pat.
CD14 is just messed up. Maybe someone in CD14 should come up with a CD14 only blog.

Smith is actually one of the more reasonable members on the Council. He seems to get it and cares about what he does. He also cares more about Neighborhood Councils then any of the other idiots.

I live in CD 12 and Greig is my councilmember. I had no idea he was obsessed with potholes and street paving, but I'm glad he is because they just happen to be paving my street this week.

Of course I prefer he keep his focus on trash and the dump!

Stifle it Krack-pot; the traffic for CD14 issues versus anything else here speaks for itself.

The rest of L.A. is asleep in traffic.

Just because CD14 constituents use this venue to exercise 1st amend. right you people dog them. AT least they are in the know and politically savy otherwise they wouldn't be blogging on here. IF you had to deal with what they have you would be pissed also.

I like the new team of Smith, Parks, Zine and Perry. They stick together on important votes and are a force to reckon with. I hope they continue to vote against the b.s. in council in 2006

Elect a REPUBLICAN... in CD14???

HA, you're killing me. CD14 was RE-CREATED during redistricting to make DAMN sure no one but a liberal, Latino EVER gets more than single digits, anytime in this millenium.

Get real!

Smith cares about Neighbohood Councils??? What rock did you crawl out from under? He cuts the NC's out of every decision he makes. Probably because they hold his feet to the fire on the various shinanigans he tries to get away with. Speaking of a pain in Smiths ass, don't forget his well publicized fued with Neighborhood Council President and our dear friend Mr. Alger. His council went toe to toe with Smith over the Wal Mart issue and look to be on the verge of going at it again over Sunshine Canyon because while Smith screams and yells about Sunshine, his Chief of Staff Troll used to be a lobbyist for them and still continues to lobby the votesto "defeat" Greig in February.

Smith doesnt give a shit about anything else but getting re-elected via his top campaign contributors. Lots of talk and no substance. He has yet to keep a single promise he made during his campaign.

Cannot imagine where the last blogger lives. Must live in a district other than cd 12.

Many were holding their breath when Hal left office, because as difficult as he could be, he really cared about the community in which he and his family lived and acted upon that caring. Hal single handidly made our City safer with his police support, saved countless numbers of lives when he created the earthquake standards and made them part of the City Building and Safety code...and then came the Northridge earthquake, and had for nearly all of his years a Citzen's Advisory Council in each community and overall. So......how much could anyone do to top that when Hal was termed out.

Well, Greig stepped in and after a bit of a troubled start, when he decided to abandon the Citizen's Advisory Councils....in favor of the Neighborhood Councils that were just forming, he has picked up the pace and found his own passions and means of caring for our community.

Greig has done a developed his own sense of style, has taken on his own causes and has become very comfortable within himself.

The 12th council district is in good and competent hands with Greig Smith at it's helm.

Greig understands business, residential needs and attempts to balance them all.

Some who thought he was intractable, found surprisingly that he listens and doesn't hesitate to change his mind when the facts as he knows them change. Some think of those who are willing to change their opinions are weak others think they are the smartest.

Greig is blossoming in his position as a City Council member, will make some mistakes, but is clearly minimizing them and stepping to the forefront on most issues. He is approachable and doesn't unnecessarily waste time. He is representing the 12th very well.

Tofu girl and 7:20 poster must be Nichole Bernson.

NOBODY thought Hal Bernson was caring and good and he certainly didn't give a flying fuck about the community he left from IMMEDIATELY.

The only thing Bernson cared about was helping S&S Homes get more more more houses.

You go, Tofu Girl.

This polarization of the left and right has ruined governance in America.

When the parties were evenly divided and there was no computer gerrymandering, the electeds HAD to work together and the results were commonsensical.

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

We need a reasonable redistricting of Los Angeles, much the same as does California, so we can get the electeds working together again, instead of against.

One can find the Smith staff posts here without even trying. Anyone with the slightest inkling knows that Smith is good for nothing but paying lip service, collecting contributions, getting caught laundering campaign donations, and taking credit for other peoples work.

This guy is a dinasoar. All this "I love Neighborhood Councils" crap is just that, a load of crap.

I have noticed that Alger has remained conspicuosly quiet on this thread. What's up Jim? Mitch run away with your keyboard? You going to let Smith say he loves Neighborhood Councils after he threatened to sue yours in Northridge because one of your membershad the nerve to call him out for lying to the community?

Unfortunately for Greig, he seems to be more of a policy guy than a schmoozer. His successes have been in getting his motions through, acquiring tougher restrictions on BFI and implementing residential upgrades.

He still works in the same City Hall we know and love and is bound by decisions/budgets/contracts that already exist. Should that come as a shock to Mayor Sam's readers? I think not. He may not perfect (which of us are), but he does keep his eye on the ball and is working for a better CD 12

I thought Mitch Englander was banned from Mayor Sam? The obvious propaganda that "Greig cant change the system" is a load of BS. Greig's problem is that he is part of the very system that needs to change.

Greig is way to close to the BFI family for any of his efforts to be taken as anything other than a ploy, just like Bernson who sold out CD 12 for years playibg both sides of the fence.
