Because the Garbage Wasn't Enough

Talk about a New Year's resolution. Since Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) hasn't created enough headaches over Sunshine Canyon, now we get word that they face arraignment on February 15 over allegations of improper asbestos storage.

BFI was charged Friday with five counts, one of which carries a maximum fine of $5,000 to $250,000. The other counts carry top possible fines of $1,000.

So, using simple math, we slap them on the wrist for $254,000 max and we see our rates go up the next chance they get.

As an FYI, BFI uses the site in question to repair and maintain their truck fleet and to paint trash bins.

What a stupid comment from Antonio on the DWP issue.
Daily News

Still, he said he disagreed with Chick's outrage over a recent report that found the Department of Water and Power is spending $33,000 buying bottled water from a private company, and the city is spending nearly $90,000 on bottled water.

"Given the challenges we are facing on the homeless, on traffic, on a whole variety of other issues, I don't put much into this," Villaraigosa said. "I'll look into it, but I think we have a lot bigger challenges to deal with."

Are you kidding? of course he is right-there are way bigger issues than this bottled water issue.
But..I would have liked to ask our mayor about the LA Weekly article which suggested selling the DWP. It was great reading and worth pursuing for the city.

BFI won't raise rates over a measly $200,000 fine.

For one thing, they shouldn't have the residential trash contract and if Antonio Villaraigosa and City Council totally wimp out and give it to them without re-negotiating it for a shorter term, they won't be able to raise rates in the middle of a contract.

Anyway, they didn't raise rates over double liners that cost 40 MILLION DOLLARS so I doubt that 200K will even make them blink.

Hell, they pay more than that to have their lobbyists hang around city hall or attend hearings.

Tsk tsk. And to think they just told the North Valley Coalition that there is NO WAY they could have an asbestos problem.

Word up BFI..

You aren't going to get the city of Santa Clarita's contract back. We will never, ever renege on our pledge to NOT use BFI and NOT allow our trash to go to Sunshine Canyon.

Karl is wasting his time up here... Michelle has more pull than he does.

You've bullshitted the city of LA that you can go get all the trash from all over, but you can't get us, the 4th largest city in the county.

You can't get any of the other contracted cities in the county.

Give it up and go back to the East and run your dumps there. You are hated here.

LA will come to their senses. They can't be that dumb. Your lobbyists aren't working here. How can they be working down there? OH..is it because we have a limit on campaign contributions here? Aha, I bet that's it.

LA Councilmen, WAKE UP! You don't need them.
