What's Up in CD8?

Bernard Parks represents the 8th Councilmanic District. He was a police officer who worked his way up the ranks to become the Los Angeles Police Department's 52nd Chief. When the Chief was up for another term, he was tossed out by then Mayor James Hahn. But revenge was sweet for Parks, soon after he was elected to the City Council where he could be a thorn in the side to the Mayor, later he ran against the Mayor. He didn't win, but he was later part of the coalition that allowed Antonio Villaraigosa to defeat Hahn handily.

City Hall blog fans know Councilman Parks as "Bitter Bernie" and indeed his dust-up with the now defunct Fourth Floor Blog is legendary. Parks is known as a Councilman who fights for his District though some of his foes don't appreciate his tactics. Though a Democrat from way back, Parks is part of the slightly less left of center caucus that includes his fellow police officers on the Council, Dennis Zine and Greig Smith. Parks tends to be the least likely to support low income housing schemes and is generally one of the few pro-business votes on the Council. During the Mayoral race, with the lack of a Republican in the main race (sorry Walter), many in the GOP backed Parks, notably Republican Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

So, what's up in CD8?

What's up is one inexperienced council member who is barely capable of his duties.

His equally inexperienced family members do him no justice either.

This man may be as nice as they come, but that doesn't make him competent. He was NOT competent as a Police Chief and he is NOT competent as a Councilmember.

Thank the good Lord he couldn't have won for mayor.

Lordy, lordy... for all you AV haters - get down on your hands and knees and praise Jesus that you don't have Parks there. Even though it was never a real possibility, hence the "Bitter Bernie" tag he has on this blog.

Interesting point of view, except...

AV was NOT competent as a councilmember, in fact, he wasn't even THERE as a councilmember.

What's "competent" got to do with anything in this bass-ackwards city government?

Bernie bitter? Hell yes he's bitter! True he got fired but he knew it was coming. Hahn's timing was bad (the beginning of Black History month) but Bernie knew he was out.
As a councilmember, he doesn't do alot of the high profile things and he's not interested in photo ops like AV and Huizy, but the folks in his district like him. His office is responsive to calls and district needs. They may get them done slower but they will respond. You all know that you can be a crappy councilperson but if your constituents like you, your in. Well, that plus low voter turnout will get you in.

I will say that we have more to thankful for in CD 8 than you chumps in CD 14. All you do is argue and pontificate about shit that you have no control over.

Bernie may not be the best councilperson, but he is pretty effective at getting the job done.

As far as being supported by the GOP, great! He's never said that he was a Democrat (it was implied). Any support from groups with money is good.

Give him a break. He's still learning. He has no major fuck ups yet.

Are you insane?!?! With his committee assignments alone, he is the most powerful member of the City Council!!!!

I'm not a Bitter Bernie supporter but I gained respect for him when he went against the ACLU appointments for the right reason. He was also one of the few who votoed AGAINST the DWP pay hike and for good reason. Look at the mess the city is in and now more unions will fight for what DWP got. He has his baggage but I like the fact that he's his own man regardless of what the little midget Antonio says. He's not easily intimindated and pressured. We need council members like him. Didn't like him as Chief but agree that he does take care of his part of town.

No doubt things are better in CD8 than CD14. I think we can all agree CD14 is the official armpit of the City of LA.

CD 8? CD8?

Wait a minute; is there another CD besides 14?

You know, the CD where all the folks just blog instead of working to better the place.

i was gonna buy an apartment building here in this CD.

I went there and black kids of all ages started calling my hispanic workers spics and started threatening me that they would "fuck me up" cause i looked like a cop.

I pulled out of escrow. This area is hell, someone should just give it to the palestinians.

Bernard Parks is a Democrat. It's not implied. He has sought and got the endorsement of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party in the past. He has done good work for the party. He may get GOP support, but so do a lot of moderate Democrats because the GOP in this city, county and state are useless.

One very important point that should be posted is how respected and classy Bernard Parks Jr. is. His dad got a lot of flack for hiring him but he is a good, decent man and does a great job for his dad. Very open for Parks to post on this blog. Again, he's his own man and I hope he continues voting against agendas items in council that the others are too afraid to because of Antonio. He should be given credit for trying and getting LA an NFL team

I have a lot of respect for Parks. He is always cool and classy much better than the other clowns on the council. He seems mature compared to Zine and other councilmembers who whine and cry when they don't have their way. I wish we had more independent thinkers like him.

That's what i'm talkin' bout. CM Parks inviting folks to sit down and have a conversation with him. Most of you chumps on this blog from CD 14 just talk shit because your councilmember ain't shit. (or has yet to prove himself).

New bumper sticker
"My councilmember can beat up your councilmember"

CM Parks is a classy cat in old school suits. He drives himself and is not afraid to say when he does not know enough about a subject. He does his own research many times and it very cool. Folks hate on him for being disciplined but that's why I like him. I'm not even one of his constituents but i am a person of color and he can represent me anytime.
I think CD 14 chumps are just pissed because they are embarassed by the CM and it will be like that for some time, even after Huizy.
Oh, and Herb Wesson is no puppet of AV. Ludlow may have been but not Wesson. Can't wait for what's up in CD10.
