Live from AlcoHollywood: it's the Holly Trolley!
Garcetti gives good junket: the other night, your uncalibrated scribe was among the first freedom riders to hop on board the Holly Trolley, which is part Red Car and part DASH bus, and which debuts to the public tonight.
And indeed I was, let history record, the first person to use the Trolley for true transport, which I made mention of in my Martini Republic piece, hopping off at Hollywood and Vine to catch my Metro home, complete with witness and the card signed at LAist by Zach Behrens.
But something I missed at the event (which featured Garcetti, Wendy Greuel, Johnny Grant, and luminous others) was that there were protesters present!
The LAIndependent's Rosanna Mah picks it up from there...
That's not the only, er, hiccup in the launch: as of today, the LADOT still has no route info or PR up, although the ever-diplomatic Garcetti's office informs that the website "hollywoodtrolleys.com" should be up and running tonight. So hit refresh, sit back, relax, and try not to let the Orange Line's accident-prone launch, nor the teetotaling protestors diminish your expectations!
UPDATE: Josh from Garcetti's office informs in the comments that the LADOT site indeed has a map up: and here it is.

At the recent press preview launch, three protesters decried the 27-foot trolley as a “mobile drunk tank of wheels” that will shepherd inebriated revelers from club to club.
Protesters claimed that city officials should rename Hollywood to AlcoHollywood.

LADOT does have in fact have information and maps up, although they left the release-issuing to our office. From ladottransit.com, pull down "Holly Trolley"from the "Other Services'" menu, which takes you to http://www.ladottransit.com/other/trolley/index.html
Map and everything!

In NYC and probably a lot of Chicago, too, restaurants do very well during week nights, because patrons can eat a meal, have a cocktail or two, and not have to drive. Can't do that in LA. This is a great business decision by Hollywood and DOT. Someone has brains.

Those protestors show how deep the Puritan roots are in this country.

I hate to be a pill, but this is not a "trolley bus," as mentioned in the L.A. Independent article. It is merely a bus, which happens to be shaped like a Brill streetcar or trolley car. A "trolley bus" is a bus with a catenary pole on top to collect power from streetcar wires strung overhead. Again, sorry to be such a transit nerd about it.

Thank God for that clarification! Imagine how mortified you'd feel if you used the term "trolley bus" when what you really should say is "bus." Another bullet dodged.
