Define 'Lobbyist'

Beth Barrett with the Daily News writes that dozens of influential people who represent special interests - including union, business and nonprofit leaders -regularly schmooze city officials with little public scrutiny or accountability, according to a Daily News review of records.

The main crux of the article follows:

And they say that after making good on a campaign promise to ban registered lobbyists from commissions, Villaraigosa has still appointed many people to commissions although they represent a wide range of special interests. "When the mayor said he wouldn't appoint lobbyists to commissions, that's not accurate," said Steve Afriat, a registered lobbyist and president of the Los Angeles Lobbyists and Public Affairs Association, which has championed enacting a broader definition of lobbyist.

"He should have said he wouldn't appoint registered lobbyists - those that play be the rules, (instead) that he'd only appoint lobbyists who fly under the radar."

Well said. The article goes on with all the typical excuses from many of LA's elected pols. However, one bright spot was highlighted at the end:

Brendan Huffman, director of public policy for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, said his organization registers whether it meets the $4,000 quarterly threshold or not.

"We register because it's the right thing to do. We think the public has a right to know who influences public policy."

I guess that would mean their are a few good apples. Too bad they are buried at the bottom of LA's barrel .

Any friend of Antonio.

Our Mayor is as transparent as they come. This guy doesn't have many genuine freindships. His manly urges always screws any hint of friendship - literally. Those hanging around him now are bottom feeders, just waiting for his scraps - hey what do you know, lobbyist defined!

Schmoozing isn't the same as lobbying, MF. Lobbyists actually get paid to ask a representative to vote a certain way. Non-profits don't lobby - they educate. And "representing a particular interest" is NOT the same as being a lobbyist. Think about health advocates, education advocates, entertainment industry leaders . . . they are not lobbyists.

Afriat is the last guy who should suggest a definition on lobbying. You can be sure that it would benefit his club of prestigious paid lobbyists.

Afriat is still a little sore from the butt-kicking he got when he c=directed Nick Pacheco's losing campaign.

I'm surprised the media is reporting this type of activity. I can remember during the mayoral campaign they didn't say anything negative about Antonio. Guess calling them trolls wasn't a good idea by Antonio and now he's fair game.

Maybe the media is reading their own archives from the past year and finding out on their own just HOW little AV's promises and hyperbole mean in reality.

It wasn't newsworthy when he was just sitting on his hands for two years on the Eastside.

Now the whole city is at play, it matters when he can't and won't consistently keep his word.

Hmmm.

"lobbyist (noun) - someone who tries to persuade legislators to vote for bills that the lobbyists favor."

Nope, nobody like THAT in AV's inner (or outer) circle.

And the moon is made of green cheese, too!

Yeah, you're right... too much to expect people to be transparent and honest about their agendas in local politics!

And who in his right mind would have expected AV to do anything REALLY revolutionary.. .

Well lets start with Muruelo, then there's Ron Martinez - Gloria's husband, then there's Victor Griego, then there's Eli Broad, then there's Frank Villalobos from Barrio Planners, there there's Ameriquest, then there's any Jew with a check book, then theres' any ACLU member with a card, then there's his own little labor union cartel - sorry engineers, not you, then there's Maxinw Waters or her husband or son or daughter, the list goes on and on.

What have those folks done? Eli Broad supported Hahn.
You say every Jew w checkbook. Who??? What are they getting?
This is a CLEAN administration-they know everyone is watching so they are being EXTREMELY careful-you will NOT see corruption from this administration. Maybe some unfilled promises, some bad union contracts, but...NOT selling out to dveelopers or any one who gave money. I dare you to try to find anything even remotely corrupt. It aint happening!!!

Broad and Burkle - two Jews with big checkbooks, both made Tony the Liar who he is when they put in their hundreds of thousands of dollars into the democratic party during the 2001 election. Broad's support of Hahn this time around was only window dressing. The investigation hasn't concluded on those Florida airport vendors and Meruelo's deal is still going forward - just waiting for Tony to take over LAUSD. Keep an eye on how many contracts Ron Martinez (PeopleWorks), Victor Griego (DSO), and Frank Villalobos (Barrio Planners) get during Tony's reign.

Broken promises do not add up to a clean administration, especially when these promises were ethical in nature "I promise to clean up city hall" - wait till the honeymoon is over. I hear Parke Skelton and Martin Ludlow are under federal scrutiny. All it takes is one shoe to fall before the whole administration comes crashing down. Everything Tony the Liar touches turns to shit - personally and professionally - just wait and see.

Broad supported Hahn this time, and Burkle is NOT Jewish.

Go easy on the ethnic slurs, please!
