That was Then, This is Now

The LA Times follows up on this thread from yesterday with a story on yesterday's EAA contract protests at City Hall. Amongst the sound bytes comes this beauty...

"The mayor said that was then, this is now," a line delivered by Jerry Pfefferman, head of the Management Employees Assn. Give him credit. At least he is catching on to what everyone else in the city is seeing. What Villaraigosa said then, doesn't necessarily mean the same thing now...

Quite a mess.

IBEW will not accept the Public works engineers under their union when none of them support their work like DWP engineers do.

That was then:

"I promise to serve out my term"

This is now: "Screw you CD14"

That was then:
"I'll clean up city hall"

This is now: "Ameriquest in your face."

That was then: "An injury to one is an injury to all"

This is now: "An injury to me is an injury to all"

That was then: "...till death do us part."

This is now: "...hold on, let me get my zipper down."

L.A. you asked for it, now you got it - Antonio Villaraigosa - a man of little integrity and even less cahracter!

Quino had the controller report stating the city has $130 million left over that it will put in reserve this year. Sure Antonio didn't like knowing its out there now. Just wait til the other unions starting storming into city hall when their contracts come up.

I sure liked the lie Fujioka told about the "transfer" of funds being a "one time only transfer". Those of us in accounting know that the city transfers those funds "one time" EVERY YEAR! This just proves that the CAO does NOT know what he is doing much less what he is talking about. Obsfiscate, deny, lie...that's all they know, but everyone is now getting the true picture.

Hey Bunker, you make a valid point but the correct spelling is:

"renegotiate"

Actually, Archie had the correct spelling because the has "reneged" on his promises and on his commitment to organized labor.

Can't leave out that key word otherwise the grammar patrol will get me.

The correct point if not the correct spelling. I hope AV reconsiders his current position, especially in light of recent information.

With all the controversy surrounding the CAO's office and its handling of the labor contracts over the past two years, maybe it's time for Controller Chic to audit the CAO. If evidence of malfeasance is found, she can then refer the findings to the District Attorney for prosecution just as she did after the CRA audit. If there is no malfeasance found, she can then give the CAO a clean bill of health. Let the chips fall where they may.

From now on, whenever someone gets a "promise" or pledge from hizz-dishonor, the mayor, they need to triple-check the stale date on it.

"good until 'month-day-year' "

...or better yet, he should add some fine print, like maybe:

"void where prohibited by any of my own future political needs"

Has anyone heard about the fact that over 100 EAA people at the Hyperion sewage treatment plant called of sick in concert yesterday? How much raw sewage got dumped into Santa Monica Bay? If it happened how come the Mayor didn't notify us of this impending danger?

Yes, I heard that they had to stop some service at Van Nuys Airport because of a sick out. Is the city keeping us in the dark about a run away problem that could affect all of us?

City employees doing sick outs? This sounds like what happened with the police years ago. Screw all of them. Now is the time to secede from LA cuz it's coming apart anyway.

Maybe Chic coulc find out if anyone at the CAOs office has even a room temperature IQ. That would be a positive note because it seems as though that entire group from the CAO down are brain dead.

Has anybody heard about the struggle hotel employees are engaged in regarding equal pay for equal work at the Glendale Hilton Hotel? I guess now Antonio and Martin are going to turn on their long time union friend and supporter Maria Elena Durazo (Miguel Contrera's widow and one of Antonio's best friends) too or can they selectively back equal pay for equal work for every else except in their own backyard?

4:19pm Antonio has found a camera every week, city council. He's been to more city council meetings than any mayor I can remember just to get in front of the camera.

GREAT STORY IN THIS WEEK'S LA WEEKLY
Union of Scofflaws
L.A.’s big unions fail to open their books
by JEFFREY ANDERSON

story says most unions in LA have not filed a financial report and Rocky is not pursuing them. In fact the EAA doesn't have a financial report on file with the city.

I was an EAA member and am a DWP engineer who went on stike every one of the five days back in '75. I went on strike every day during the mid-'90's strike. I marched side-by-side with Local 18 members every minute of every strike. I lost a lot of money being on strike, but it was worth it. I don't remember ever seeing a non-DWP EAA member walking with me.

Maybe that is why Local 18 accepted DWP EAA members, but did not invite you. Maybe that is why City Hall knows DWP employees really mean it when they say "strike".

Maybe because non-DWP EAA members talk-the-talk but have yet to walk-the-walk (strike), City Hall gives EAA no respect.

Until you bring the City business to a standstill, you will get nothing. DWP employees start saving to pay bills months in advance of a potential strike. It is not fun being on strike. It is not a game. Start saving money for a 30-day strike and start walking.

And I'm tired of hearin this "equal pay for equal work" crap. Every DWP employee has to earn his/her own pay plus another 7 per cent extra which is transferred to City Hall each year to pay a portion of your salaries. DWP/Local 18 employees subsidize EAA members. City Hall knows this. That's the real reason they don't mind giving Local 18 a 3-6% COL in return for 7% free money every year.

Here's how to get DWP pay: a)apply for a DWP job (duh), b) be a good person, c) be very very smart, d) beat out anywhere from 40 to 200 other candidates for each opening, and e) do an outstanding job every day if you get in. My guess is that 99% of EAA members are NOT on any current DWP civil service list.

I could carry a sign and chant that I want equal pay to Bill Gates pay (CEO of Microsoft), but it isn't going to happen. Quite frankly, staying with the "equal pay for equal work" strategy is only going to box EAA into a corner. Figure a way to get what you want while giving the Mayor and Council some political cover in front of the voters. Until you're smart enough to do that, you will get nothing.

Folks, I've done everything I said above. You need to do the same.

I offer no apologies for the reality check and the "tough love" comments above. You need it. Badly.

Good luck to each of you. And lastly, don't believe everything your union tells you, I don't.

I agree with 8:21. Get off your lazy ass and do something about it. I was once a EAA member for the city. I got sick and tired of the stupid whining that we were not given parity. SO i did the next best thing and that was to take matters into my own hands. I interviewed for DWP and got hired. I beat out a lot of internal applicants for the promotion position. I hope a lot of the city employees will realize the same.
