Let Arnold Do His Thing
Rusty Hammer, writing in the Business Perspective on the LA Chamber of Commerce's website makes an excellent case why the business community should support Governor Schwarzenegger's choice of Lesbian Democrat Susan Kennedy as his new Chief of Staff. Hammer notes her past experience on the California Public Utilities Commission and her ability to help the Governor bridge partisan waters in Sacramento as being ultimately good for business. We agree. Still, the blue-hair, gay chasing, caveman sect of Republicans is up in arms over the appointment and seemingly unwilling to support the Governor's move. The California Republican Assembly (CRA), better known as the Taliban wing of the GOP in the Golden State, has gone to the extreme to call on the state party to reconsider its endorsement of Arnold in the 2006 GOP Primary. Please.
Arnold's the best thing to happen to our party in years. Do they want to blow it now? Sure lets yet again put up another Bill Jones-Bill Simon whatever and hand the Governor's seat to Phil Angelides. And while you're at it, lets give Cruz Bustamante a blank check at the buffet. Cause that's what will happen without Arnold. The Republican's only chance to succeed in California is to go back to the party's roots of smaller government, less taxes, personal freedom & responsibility and a strong national defense. Can we forgot about the gay marriage and stem cell crap?

This has been the problem with the California Republican Party. The more radical wing will not support moderate Republicans. When their electeds want to be more moderate on an issue, this fringe threatens to run someone more conservative against them during the next election.
Consequently, they end up the minority in the Senate and Assembly, yet have just enough votes to block most liberal Democratic bills and budgets.
Overall, this sucks for the entire State.

Good luck trying to deal with the national Republican Party. They're busy trying to form our nation's own quasi-fascist political movement, and California Republicans are sitting around whining about "smaller government, less taxes, personal freedom & responsibility and a strong national defense"? No one at the national level cares about this stuff any more, because they've got a political marketing machine that can, and will, kick your ass for not doing what they say.
The real issue is: why haven't democrats embraced libertarians and "California Republicans"? The left needs to come to terms with the laws of economics, marry it to their socialist ideals of helping out the weakest, and they'll have a platform to bring these folks in out of the cold. Plus, the left might finally be able to pull money from businesses that would otherwise fund the Republicans - who pretty much pay lip service to "pro-business" causes, while trashing our long term prospects of a healthy economy.

You guys are so wound up with sexual preference that you ignore the obvious; no one really cares that Susan Kennedy is gay or not, that is just not the issue.
Republcans are getting a oothold in California, and a lot of the strategy involves working with and coordinating with the Governor. Susan has demanded (and received) carte blanhe in hiring and firing staff.
HOw the hHell can they schedule meetings with Arnold, have confidential communications with Arnold, and go to sleep wondering what she knows and who she's going to tell.
There are few secrets in politics, but you don't need your opposition to know your every move as soon as you conceive it.
All the Senators and Assemblymembers are really up in arms.
I'm betting she leaves.

Krakover - do you really thing she is going to jeopardize her job like that? If she did what you and the cavemen in the legislature fear, she'd never get hired by anyone again. She knows there's a spotlight on her. Give me a break.

phil krakover,
If hiring this lady is like punching a hole in the bottom of your party's boat, then why did the governor do it?
In "the spirit of bi-partisanship"? To avoid negative press from getting his butt kicked (by providing a story after his junket to China to further stall his critics)?
Maybe he's getting ready to sell out the Republican cause in order to gain political support. If he were to do that, he'd need to draw out the right-wing nut-jobs in the legislature - to show how different he is from them.
If does that, where will his financial base come from? Could he still pull support from Republican party donors, while distancing himself from Republican party rhetoric, and shifting his base to something new?
The thought just occured to me that Arnold is going to set himself up as a new wedge issue for Republicans in CA. Does he have the Republican party endorsement for Governor in the next election yet?

Angelides won't win. Westly will.

Krakover has a good point about this though. If you were beholden to the Republican party to get re-elected or find a job outside the legislature, why would a Democrat as chief of staff in the Governor's office make you move to Arnold's side?
The problem with moderation is that all it really does (typically) is make both sides want to take you down.
Arnold doesn't have too many friends on the left to help him out, does he? After having to blow fat amounts of money on this past election beating him down, the left's not going to support anything he has to say. I can't think of anyone who values their political life that would step in to help him out after all that he has done.
This was great from a one- to two-week media cycle perspective, but I don't see how it helps him out in the long run. It's a media stunt. Remember when he got Brulte up in some airport hangar and said, "We fixed workers comp!"
That press conference worked on us lay-people - but now he's trying to do the same thing to convince the lefty politicians that he's "fixed" his own office (I don't think they give two s***s about this - but, really, this huckster stuff is all he's probably ever known).
