Trolls

From Merriam-Webster Online:
Main Entry: troll
Function: noun
Etymology: Norwegian troll & Danish trold, from Old Norse troll giant, demon; probably akin to Middle High German trolle lout
: a dwarf or giant in Scandinavian folklore inhabiting caves or hills
From Mayor Villaraigosa:
Reacting to media leaks, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday referred to the mayoral press pool as "trolls."

The comment, made during a news conference in South Los Angeles Monday afternoon, took reporters in attendance by surprise, some not quite sure how to take it.

"I'd rather be a gnome," quipped one City Hall scribe.

Villaraigosa's pronouncement came as he formally announced his nominees for the Community Redevelopment Agency Board of Commissioners.

The Los Angeles Times had reported the mayor's selections on Sept. 2.

Villaraigosa said he will make sure his upcoming nominees for the planning commission are not prematurely leaked to the press.

"Pat (McGreevy of The Times) and the other trolls in the room here are not going to get a preview on that one," Villaraigosa said. "They love, you know, ruining your story, getting it out."

Mayoral aides characterized the comment as "good-natured teasing."

"Internet troll"

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In the context of the Internet, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages intended to cause a disruption in discourse. The word is also often used to describe such messages.

Etymology of the word Troll.

The word likely gained currency because of its conveniently apt second meaning, drawn from the "trolls" portrayed in Scandinavian folklore and children's tales, which are often ugly, obnoxious creatures bent on wickedness and mischief. The image of the troll under the bridge in the Three Billy Goats Gruff emphasizes the rootedness of the troll in a physical environment, dislike of outsiders, particularly those who intend to graze on or in his or her domain.

P.S. How sad for those media bloggers and writers...you wicked little trolls.

IN BRIEF/LOS ANGELES COUNTY/LOS ANGELES
Mayor Says He'll Abide by DWP Pay Decision

September 20, 2005

On the eve of a City Council vote on controversial pay raises for Department of Water and Power workers, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Monday he would abide by any decision.

The package would increase the salaries of nearly 8,000 DWP workers by at least 17% over five years and possibly by as much as 34%, depending on inflation.

"It's in the council's court," the mayor said. "They are going to make a decision. When they do, I will support that decision, whatever it is."

"Often a person will post a sincere message that they are emotionally sensitive about. Skillful trolls know that an easy way to upset them is to disingenuously claim that the person is a troll. On other occasions a person may not instantly understand or fit into the social norms of a forum where most users are the same."

"The long history of trolling and the strong support for anonymous and pseudonymous discourse on the Internet, suggests that the story of the anonymous troll is only beginning. Whether there can be a "culture" consisting of people who do not know each other except through a common experience of being bounced from Internet forums is questionable, but some do claim it is possible and already occurring.

There is strong evidence for this in the existence of forums that claim to exist specifically to support trolls and trolling, to exchange troll tips, and to identify targets that other trolls might fruitfully bait or debate.

Trolling culture is best observed in trolls who do not know each other working together. Because the common methods of creating inflammatory posts are well known and a subject of jokes in many places on the Internet, it is sometimes possible for a troll to identify another troll at work. A troll trolling another troll often creates massive amounts of pretend drama between the trolls which is taken seriously by non-troll observers (especially if they take sides). The end result is that the two trolls can work together to force a conversation to go off topic or center a forum's discussion around themselves more effectively than on their own."

The term (Troll) is frequently used to discredit an opposing position in an argument. This can amount to an ad hominem argument; a purported troll of this nature may actually hold an insightful but controversial position that is generating controversy precisely because it has successfully challenged entrenched opinions.

Possible reasons people use more slang monikers in Internet-mediated discussion include the feeling of anonymity and impersonal perceptions of other conversants.

Troll food refers to replies to the original controversial troll posts, that the trolls subsequently use as feedback to throw more fuel to the fire of their posts.

"Please do not feed the Trolls" is a warning sign that other article readers post to warn newcomers that they believe the original poster is a troll..

Weblogs — in their most common form as a personal soapbox with the ability for anybody to leave comments, popular weblogs often make effective springboards for trolls, either as inflammatory comments or provocative entries. The ease with which weblogs can be linked encourages troll propagation.

Right Mayor Frank that is what happened and this article also mentioned

"But a media expert from UCLA -- Villaraigosa's alma mater -- said the mayor may be "feeling the heat" from the local press.

Such teasing could backfire on the mayor, who took office July 1, according to Thomas Plate, a speech and communications professor who used to work in the editorial department at the Los Angeles Times.

"I can predict that if the mayor has lost his humor with the news media so early in his administration, it's going to be a very long term," Plate said. "He has to learn that the media is doing its job, and not let it get under his skin. The best way to deal with the march of the trolls is with a joke, but he is obviously feeling the heat."

Well, I'm finding it fascinating to AngloLA observe that the trolls here find the troll comment so fascinating.

The sense of el Trol en espanol is more disparaging still than its Internet sense--it generally means something like "male witch."

"El trol es casi siempre un personaje masculino y por ello puede ser análogo a la figura mitológica de la bruja. La aplicación de estas etiquetas a personas, en lugar de a los personajes mitológicos de los cuentos, puede tener sus orígenes en los conflictos entre las religiones paganas y el Cristianismo en la Edad Media. La gente que continuaba practicando las «antiguas costumbres» eran a menudo aislados e identificados como aliados de las fuerzas oscuras, como «brujas» —y quizá también como «trolls».

I want to watch what Jaime Olivares puts up about this. I think by calling AngloLA media "trolls," some Spanish speakers in town--like, oh, potentially about two million of them--could be having quite a private chuckle when/if Spanish media get around to saying something about it.
