Three Cheers for Bill Rosendahl

One of the newest members of the Los Angeles City Council is showing that he is a responsible elected official and has chosen staff members who seem to put a priority on addressing public concerns.

A few days ago, we received a heads up that the West Los Angeles Democratic Club had intended to hold an event to highlight opposition to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's November special election initiatives. In addition to presenting anti-Arnold speakers, the clubs intent was that this event would be a fundraiser.

All of that in and of itself - nothing wrong with it. However, upon closer examination of the group's eblast and website, we found the event was to be held at the Westchester office of Councilman Bill Rosendahl of the 11th Districtl.

We contacted Mike Bonin, Rosendahl's Chief of Staff for a further explanation. Were the West LA Democrats holding a partisan, political fundraiser on city property?

Bonin was prompt and courteous in his reply to us. He explained to us that the Council Office is part of a larger city facility that includes a park, senior center, library and other city departments. The conference room is available to the community, free of charge, provided a city employee is available to open and lock up. Numerous community groups, city agencies, etc. use the room for a variety of meetings. Even the Association of Square Dancers has set up shop there.
"The City Attorney's office advises that no political or partisan group is allowed to raise money on City property unless they are charged a fee for use of the room. Since we charge no such fee, no fundraising is permitted. That point will be underscored to the groups using the room."
Mike Bonin,
Chief of Staff, Council Member Bill Rosendahl
Bonin did however have a concern about the Democrats raising funds on the city property. He checked with the City Attorney's office and indeed, this is not allowed. The only exception would be if the Democrats were charged a fee for the room, but as its the Council Office's policy not to charge a fee, the Democrats will not be allowed to raise money.

We salute Bonin for getting back to us so quickly, and for addressing what could have been a very sticky problem for the City.

They just got caught and now you're saluting them. Please!!! Rosendahl is an idiot. Don't you remember he's the one who signed off on a special event waiver a couple of months back for a Dr. Price ceremony? The gays stormed city council and demanded they not waive the fees. Bill was dumb enough to stand in council and say he didn't know what he had signed.

Nice to know that there is at least one responsible member of the City Council. Contrast his actions with the embarassing antics of Janice Hahn, who is obsessed with getting her name in the gator story rather than working on basic quality of life issues.

Mike Bonin is a great hire -- Bill R. is lucky to have him running the show.

They do not deserve cheers at all. They just got caught. (Nice work there Sam)

According to the website posting this will still be a bash Arnold festival with Left Wing Sen Dunn and Union Wife Lyn Hilfenhaus bashing instead of coming up with any real solutions.

If any of these names seem familliar, Sen. Dunn bashes Arnold every chance he gets and Hilfenhaus has been running all over town saying she is running for State Assembly in the Republican held 38th Assembly District... fat chance of that.

I guess she will use her opposition to notifying parents their child is having an abortion as a way to show she can win a Republican seat.

Alger is going to mop the floor with any attempt from a left winger to get in the 38th race. That isn't even a cobversation worth having.

The question is, is he moderate enough to beat the Republican from Santa Clarita? I like the odds so far, and I generally don't like Democrats.

Did that old staffer of the week Phil Tate have anything to do with this? He's hot.

If Jim plays his cards right, he could win. There are enough Dems in the Valley and Cameron Smythe is an empty suit. Jim has made quite a name for himself. Too bad he doesn't run against the other Smith.

Jim is certainly the only Democrat positioned to win, that's for sure.

Lyn whatever her name is doesn't seem to mind breaking the law for a political fundraiser... not a great start.

He has worked heavily with labor on his anti-walmart activities including the UFCW in DC so I think Jim can hold his own with labor.

He just does what he thinks is right.

Noone "Steals" a Kerry grassroots group... deadbeats stop paying to maintain it and meetup solicits others to take them over.

From what I can tell, that's what he did. Smart if you ask me, now get over it.

If Rosendahl says one more time he's the new kid on the block I'm going to throw up. Oh and someone please tell him he doesn't have to keep telling people during council meetings that he's gay. No one cares. Yes, he acts like the new kid on the block because he comes off like a moron.

Hey SAM GOMPERS...

If Alger is intelligent enough to put a few Republicans on his staff the fact that you think that is a bad thing shows what is wrong with the Democratic Party.

You can nominate a left wing nut if you want to, but no way they will beat Smyth in the General. Of course the difference between the party and Alger is that Alger is running to WIN.

Alger is smart enough to surround himself with opposing viewpoints, that is what a true leader does. I didn't know he had Republicans on his staff until you said so, now I respect him even more.

Got any documentation? If so, send our way.

We're going to follow up on this one for sure. If its true, its hammer time.

Sam,

Just ask them how successful it was. They were "quietly" accepting checks and cash.

I wasn't a party to the event, just an eyewitness to the lawlessness.

Has our society gotten so bad that we congratulate people for abiding by the law? Isn't that kind of a prerequesite for being a good citizen? And in the case of an elected official, isn't upholding the law what they swear an oath to do?

Oh none of those c***s****** (including most politicians not just Rosendahl) believes in that.

That's called spin. My meathead son-in-law does it all the time.

Will we ever have a thread that Jim Alger doesn't invade? He's almost as bad as the 80 neighborhood watch guy.

I don't know that "Jim Alger" invades any posts, he is just heavilly involved and we discuss it.

If you don't like open discussion, go back to North Korea!

Something tells me that with Jims' schedule HE isn't on Mayor Sam but he certainly has his supporters. I must admit I am becoming one of them.

80 Neighborhood watch guy has a point, it was a lie but he is a broken record. Alger is just all over the place and seems to be in-tune with the people better than any politician I have seen recently.

I understand he is holding a Bar B Q this weekend... do you know where Sam?

Anon 3:30;

Your an idiot.

Alger is discussed in the DWP story, given his history with the issue certainly appropriate.

He is listed in this thread under the context that some sort of wanna-be rival attended the event discussed.

He is on the thread about his own trip to help hurricane victims in the south.

Out of over 2 dozen stories on Mayor Sam, he is in 3. So as I said before, your an idiot.

Go away.
