Open Thread for Thursday
On this day in history, US President Gerald Ford pardons former President Richard Nixon for any crimes Nixon may have committed while in office.
This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

The finger pointing which disrespectful to the victims began with the Democratic Party is like a bunch of kids not doing their chores, but they all blame the oldest.
Makes no sense for Pelosi to be so incompetent. Instead of wasting her speeches on deaf ears, she should go to Louisiana and help out like Jim Alger.

Is it true that computers at City Hall can no longer access "mayor sam?"
Anonymous said:
Liability my dear. Villaraigosa is distancing himself from Hertzberg and Trujillo right now. Haven't you noticed something, they used this blog for their convenience and now they want to stay clear away from it.

Or maybe somebody else fears something? Damage control? The site had many revelations in last couple of weeks on several councilmembers.

We sent them stuff, could be more coming. If the city does block Mayor Sam could be bad news in paper for them possibly.

RUSH: Well, we get to start off today with some news that's not going to make the left happy. (Story) "A USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll of 609 adults taken September 5th and 6th: 13% said that George W. Bush is 'most responsible' for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane; 18% said federal agencies are most responsible; 25% said that state and local officials more responsible; 38% said nobody is to blame; 6% had no opinion, and 29% said the top officials in the federal agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be fired; 63% said they should not." If you look at the whole poll, it's pretty balanced. It's pretty reasonable.

Over the past few days, residents of Los Angeles have been hit with two noteworthy figures: $82 million and $34.1 million.
The first figure represents how much city officials and developers would like taxpayers to pay to help build a massive hotel next to the downtown Convention Center.
The second figure represents how much the 2000 Democratic National Convention ended up costing L.A. taxpayers.
Those pushing for the Convention Center hotel subsidy tell us that the first figure - $82 million - is a pittance compared with all the money L.A. stands to make once a 56-story hotel attracts scads of conventions to our city.
The $34.1 million figure tells a different story.
National political conventions are supposed to be the cash cows of the convention business. Thousands of delegates descend from throughout the country, with lobbyists and the national media in tow. For four days, the hotels are booked solid, and local restaurants are packed.
Yet even when Al Gore and the Democrats came to L.A. in 2000 - at a time before 9-11, when security was less expensive - the city took a bath. There was a spike in tourism-related tax revenues, but those didn't even come close to offsetting police and administrative expenses, not to mention the inevitable lawsuits.
True, the $34.1 million loss figure doesn't include the multiplier effect of whatever economic benefits delegates' spending might have had on the local economy. But not even convention supporters pretend that that would have made this event anything but a money-loser.
All of which makes it hard to believe that the convention business - which has been in national decline for years - could really make that $82 million hotel subsidy worthwhile. While few conventions would ever cost a city as much as the political kind, few are likely to bring in as much money, either.
Unless hotel supporters can offer L.A. some very different kinds of figures, they will have a hard time finding much support for their proposal among the public.

10:00 What kind of stuff are you talking about?

9:26 If this is true, my opinion is Villaraigosa has initiated project "Gossip Control." It is detrimental to his party and career for the truth to continue leaking out of city hall. Hey, city hall employees, use after hours public places to post from. It is important we know the truth.

10:04 AM You might consider sending your tips to David Zahniser if Mayor Sam doesn't post it here.

Wasn't there a special committee created for the DNC?
Anonymous said:
Why was the city so biased in hosting the DNC? Is this normal, or did city officials kiss ass to their Bosses.

What would happen if I began a Republican outreach and information center for East Los Angeles, privately funded?
No use of tax dollars or civil servant vehicles for this project.

Nancy Pelosi and the democratic party are making a big mistake by having whored themselves in photo ops pointing fingers and blame. The people in survival mode view this a whining and bickering, it shows how low the party has gone. I will immediately change my party to any other, I will no longer be a democrat. I am disgusted with our politicians behaviour.

WHITE HOUSE G-O-P leaders are firing back after attacks on President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist says the attacks "go over the line."
And House Speaker Dennis Hastert says there's a huge recovery job ahead, and politicians can -- in his words -- "either join in" or "stand aside and criticize."
The two spoke after meeting with Bush at the White House.
They were reacting to Democratic calls for the president to fire his emergency chief, Michael Brown -- and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi's charge that Bush is "oblivious" and "in denial."
Hastert says Democrats are playing politics with the disaster, and distracting from the relief effort. Frist says the American people will dismiss criticism that's not "constructive."

I believe the response would be great. Latinos are fundamentally more socially conservative than your typical run of the line Democrat. The Democratic elected leaders in East L.A. haven't accomplished much - drop out rate is still the same, crime rate hasn't changed, economic opportunities are nonexistent - unless your connected, and in thirty years all Democratic elected leaders have accompished is giving East L.A. one black eye after another. Alatorre failing court ordred drug tests, Mike Hernandez being busted on camera buying cocaine, Gloria Molina looking for anyway to skirt the law to help her and her husband, the list goes on and on. And now Fabian Nunez is the champion of gay marriage, let's see how this sells in East L.A..
The Democratic Party and their selected - not elected - leaders like Antonio Villaraigosa have held East L.A. captive for much too long. I bet a well organized, well funded Republican drive would finish off these incompetent morons and pave the way for new much needed leadership in this Latino community.

Interesting that Ted Hayes from DOME homeless center hasn't come out to ask Antonio why the city is pulling out all stops to help Katrina victims and yet there are over 40,000 homeless people in LA. It's a no win for him though. IF he complains then it looks bad for the victims of Katrina but what about the homeless here? How can the city find beds so fast for so many over 300 and yet wouldn't offer to those people on skid row?

12:24 I guess it is an emergency. Katrina displaced families overnight.

I'm glad people are posting towards the possibility of having a Republican outreach center locally. I also agree with anon 11:24, and grateful when speaking to seniors and parents I inform of Fabian Nunez's real mission of legalizing gay marriage. Some of these individuals had no idea Fabian was pushing this, they dislike it and will hear it at the polls next time around.

ANOTHER "noteworthy figure" that NEVER has been explained, proven, backed up, or even been examined by L.A.'s "stellar" media (even though it's a mathematical impossibility). YET, they'll have little ink orgasms over a single handicapped parking space violation -- it's. . . DRUMROLL please!
80 (FAKE) NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH ORGANIZATIONS "started" in CD14 last year under Villaraigosa (at an annual cost of $150,000 in embezzled CM salary).
Anonymous said:
It used to piss me off with the whining of the neighborhood watches. Now it actually brings pleasure. Imagine letting that grind on you months after the election. That's sad, in a sorta' funny pathetic way.

Pick an AV lie of your own to grind for awhile; there will be hundreds over the next four years.
You can own a few yourself.
CD14 learned.
The animal rights people have learned.
Hertzberg is learning (taking his ideas and making sure they DON'T work).
The "school reformers: have learned. . . what? He WON'T be fixing LAUSD in any way shape or form!
The Southwest Museum "Coa-Listen" is about one dead-end "mediation" meeting and a dark empty museum facade away from getting "schooled" in the never-ending lies of Antonio.
You're next, bozo! Whatever his do-nothingness promised you, is just a few dance steps away from being un-delivered.
Laugh away!
