(LA)Observing Things Again
If there isn't a funnier blogger in Los Angeles (after Mayor Frank of course) its got to be Joseph Mailander of Martini Republic. And he is funniest when he goes after his favorite target, Kevin Roderick of LA Observed.Today, Mailader notes that Roderick was the feature of a recent puff piece in the LA Independent. With his usual flair, Mailander disects the piece and sends its author, Mary Frances Gurton, home with her tail between her legs.
Among the gems in Mailander's piece is his observations on veteran Los Angeles pundit Sherry Bebitch Jeffe's near fawning over Roderick in the piece. Mailander succesfully demonstrates that Jeffe hasn't done any real research into the blogosphere before shooting her mouth off.
The slightest scratching of the surface would reveal that Kevin Roderick's blog has profound critics. But I was most entertained by Gurton instead included LA political paleolith Shirley Bebitch Jeffe on Roderick:Jeffe's comments are interesting. Sure, a lot more people (right now) read LA Observed than Mayor Sam, but we've been around only 9 months where Roderick's been online almost five years. But we know that Mayor Sam is very influential, and we like to think, we had something to do with electing a new Mayor (I can't wait to hear some of you dispute that). On the other hand, Roderick spent the whole campaign boosting Jim Hahn with taking nary a comment from any of his readers. Here at the Sister City, you got to blast us, MAV and cut and paste like mad.
"I know Kevin. I have confidence in him as a journalist. There are other bloggers and I don't know them from Adam and they are less influential in the end. When I'm thinking and writing about something locally, I check L.A. Observed."
That's right. There you go. Because Shirley Bebitch Jeffe doesn't know "other bloggers from Adam" they are "less influential in the end."
Indeed, her loyalty to LAObserved shows. On TV, in print, she almost never says anything about anything.
Mailander shoots from the hip and tells it like it is. That's why he cracks me up while getting under the skin of "journalists" like Roderick and Marc Cooper.
Of course, it also helps that Mailander gives major props to Mayor Sam in his piece as well.

Mailander's a wack job, but what's worse is that Roderick is a pompous ass. The "gliteratti" of the media-government complex in LA can masturbate all over him, I'll take Mayor Sam, Martini Republic and LA Voice any day.
Have you all forgotten that Kevin Roderick was the one who did the set up piece on Doug Dowie that led to his downfall? Doesn't he get some credit for this? Then again, maybe I'm asking the wrong crowd. You'd have to have worked for Dowie to truly understand what I mean!
Mailander makes a lot of factual errors. Martini Repub may be fun once in a while, but the guy is not a reporter in the traditional sense. I don't think he even intends to be.
So Roderick got one story right. Doesn't negate the fact that his site is full of fluff and occasional soft core. Doesn't make up for that he thinks he's the uber-blogger and has dimwits like Jeffe conned.
I understand Dowie is shopping a book based on his 30 years in LA journalism and politics. It will be VERY insightful. I can't wait to read it.
Marc Cooper is one hairy, smelly, fat piece of shit.
Does anyone else think this nothing more than inside dribble among piss-a$$ competing bloggers?
