SEIU Attacked!

We just received a VERY disturbing communication from SEIU: Please read the message below. This is nuts!

-------------------

Honorable Friends,

The attached resolution passed by the Board of Directors of SEIU Local 347 concerns an unfortunate and dangerous incident involving our General Manager. Julie Butcher's car was burned in front of her home at 4 a.m. last Wednesday. A can of gas was left next to the car. The police and fire departments are investigating, but we have no other information. We held off on informing you in the hopes of having more facts to clarify the incident. Nevertheless, we are aware the any attack on our General Manager cannot be seen outside of her role as a civic leader and representative of workers. We ask you to condemn the attack, meanwhile, and will inform you as to the progress of the investigations.

SEIU Local 347 Resolution

On July 7, 2005, an act of arson was perpetrated against the vehicle belonging to SEIU Local 347 General Manager Julie Butcher while parked at her home. The Executive Board of SEIU Local 347 takes note of the following facts and circumstances:

1. $ Julie Butcher has been an indomitable fighter on behalf of SEIU Local 347 members and working families throughout Southern California.

2. $ Julie Butcher has played a leadership role in the public affairs of the City of Los Angeles and the entire metropolitan region.

3. $ Julie Butcher has continued as an advocate for SEIU Local 347 members even when such positions have been criticized in the media and other quarters.

4. $ The circumstances strongly suggest that the arson is linked to Julie Butcher’s position with SEIU Local 347 and advocacy on its behalf.

5. $ The circumstances strongly suggest that the arson was intended to intimidate and terrorize Julie Butcher.

6. $ The arson occurred in a densely populated area in the City of Los Angeles and created a serious risk of harm to Julie Butcher, her family and neighbors.

7. $ The arson is under investigation by the Los Angeles Fire Department and a report has been filed with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Based on the above facts and circumstances, the Executive Board of SEIU Local 347 hereby resolves that:

1. $ The arson is condemned and is considered as an act of terrorism

2. $ The arson, although directed against Julie Butcher, is deemed an act against the entire membership of SEIU Local 347.

3. $ SEIU Local 347 calls upon the Mayor and City Council to condemn this act of terrorism against one of the City’s civic leaders.

4. $ SEIU Local 347 calls upon all labor unions to condemn this act of terrorism against our Union Sister.

This resolution was enacted on the 8th day of July 2005.

Go get 'em Julie. I know I've given you crap in the past, but this is wrong on many levels.

Looks like a real ugly power struggle is starting at 347.

Anyone care to wagger it was someone in her own local that she did over?

If not a random act, I would also think it was a 347 member; she has her detractors in the union. However, could it be a setup to make herself the “victim”, gain sympathy and give her a break from the heat she is feeling after backing Hahn? Strange things happen in this town. Didn’t the LAPD help run the vice trade and try to kill people during your tenure Mayor Frank?

But then again, with the power struggle going on in the AFL-CIO, in which the SEIU international is heavily involved, maybe it is just an old fashion power struggle. I would think it is a disgruntled member, maybe one who did not like the outcome of some matter with the city or the union. A little liquor, some trash talk and there you have it. To bad, the politics and everything else surrounding city hall are not worth it.

Regarding 11:31 posting – Thinking about it, like or dislike Julie she would not pull off such a stunt. However to think of this act as an orchestrated effort by 347 member(s) is very unpleasant and raises serious long term issues for 347. To consider it is linked to her city activities, but not carried-out by a disgrunted union member(s), raises even more concerns and harkens back to the days of Mayor Frank. Although, since Hahn’s loss she has lost her biggest allie and will less of a pain to some, so why bother? I still put my money on a random act of violence.

Looks random, but the Pachuecos are desperately trying to find a political angle to exploit. If they come up with something clever, expect a whispering campaign.

A whole bunch of us 347 members have been clammoring for her to resign. Maybe someone utilized a stupid way to get her to quit. This type of mischeif gives us all a bad name, but it is really time for her to go.

Signed,
A Member who would rather have a COLA than respect.

I guess that without a car Julie could not make it to the County Fed meeting to help elected Martin Ludlow. But then again I have not seen her much since the election.
