Civil Rights Leaders May be Headed to Police Commission

ChipMackLots of activity abuzz at the 15th Floor offices of the MEAV transition team. Meeting this morning to set out the course of the new administration is Mayor Elect Villaraigosa, Jimmy Blackman, Robin Kramer, Council Member Martin Ludlow, Alma Martinez, Nick Patsaours, Ari Swiller and Council Member Jack Weiss.

The latest news we hear is that Antonio Villaraigosa is considering two longtime Los Angeles civil rights leaders to serve on the Los Angeles Police Commission.

Reverend Cecil "Chip" Murray (pictured left) was the pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly 30 years until his recent retirement. John Mack (pictured right), has been President of the Los Angeles Urban League since 1969.

Its also part of the plan to have Mack serve as President of the commission.

Both have been prominent in the past when issues of race have crossed path with the Los Angeles Police Department such as the Rodney King beating, Margaret Mitchell shooting and others.

Clearly, these two appointments could be simultaneously the most praised and most controversial of Mayor Elect Villaraigosa's administration. No doubt that some members of the African-American community and civil rights leaders will be pleased, but some pro-LAPD factions could be concerned.

IF MURRAY OR JOHN MACK GET ON POLICE COMMISSION IT WILL BE AN INSULT TO CHIEF BRATTON AND A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS CITY WILL BE FURIOUS. LAPD OFFICERS DON'T LIKE ANTONIO AS IT IS AND WITH PARKS THREATENING TO TAKE AWAY 3-12 THEIR READY TO WALK.

These 2 losers are the ones who think threatening violence will get their point across. Antonio can't be this stupid to put 2 racists who hate cops on the commission. You will see a major protest and Antonio will get slammed citywide. Seems he's already started pandering to the blacks.

That's a little racist don't you think?

Murray is out there, but John Mack is a serious, thoughtful leader.

Bratton can hardly get his shorts in a twist; he wss out campaigning for Hahn the last couple of weeks.

Winners get to make the appointments; elections have consequences.

Notice the absence of the Chair of the Transition Committee from the important meeting. So much for titles and "The Partnership is back". Not.

I agree; keep your eye on Skobin; he's solid.

You people are pathetic racist fu$#s!!! Anyone who is black and has a civil rights background is anti-police?

Murray was the leading voice in condemning the riots back in '92 and pushed for cross-racial and community dialogue. He has been on the forefront of building bridges across divided ethnic, religious and cultural communities. When everyone else excluded HIV and AIDS victims for their "homosexual" and "deviant" practices, Murray embraced them - despite the uproar in the religous community. He's been leading the charge for the black community to take responsibility for its own contributions to black-on-black violence and not attributing it to LAPD.

John Mack has been out there as well demanding more than social hand-outs, but concrete jobs, training and infrastructure development. Has he been critical of LAPD? Yes. And rightfully so. Perhaps the non-minorities in this City don't see the problems, but we do.

It's good to see you guys are on the way out.

Critical of LAPD is putting it midly. He's an asshole. He's in front of the cameras as soon as something happens with LAPD rushing to judgement. Did you hear HIM after the Devin Brown shooting? He condemns LAPD whenever he gets a chance. Its not racist but reality when a comunity activist like Mack comes out and blames everyone for the violence in South LA and especially LAPD instead of the damn PARENTS.

Where have these black leaders been with the racial violence at Jefferson? No where! They haven't said a word. Did you see Mack during the Parks reappointment meetings? Again he acted like an asshole and kept stating that it was a racial issue instead of stating the truth that Parks was a corrupt Chief and didn't do shit for LAPD but made the city lose 1,000 officers.

MEAV should also add Wendy Greuel to the MTA Board...that would be a smart move. Just please don't put LaBonge there

Rosendahl would be a great choice for the MTA. He ran on a traffic/transportation/mass transit platform. He and MEAV share the same positions and agenda on transit issues. He is willing to stand up to special interests, is impatient with the minimal to slow progress on these issues, and is willing to spend his time and energy to get things done.

There is only so much ass-kissing Antonio can do with the Blacks. The White and Latino communities will FLIP if he puts 2 blacks on a 5-member commission (40% of the panel) in a city where blacks only comprise 12% of the population. Pick ONE or the other, but NOT both. Just because blacks are responsible for 60% of the murders doesn't mean they get 40% of the Police Commission seats. It DOES NOT work that way.
