Breaking a Campaign Promise?

A fun little e-mail received via tip today...

Mayor Sam and friends,

It appears that someone got their hands on an autodialer (anyone know where Hal netkin is?) and started placing thousands of calls to CD 12 constituents this weekend. The calls refer to Greig Smiths' "breaking of his campaign promise" by caving in and renewing the contract for Sunshine Canyon and BFI. The calls also draw a "pay to play" link to Smith (who supported Hahn) via his Chief of Staff, Mitchell Englander, Nephew of Sunshine Canyon/BFI lobbyist Harvey Englander. (Waste Management pulled out of the bidding the day before the hearing raising many eyebrows in the
district)

These calls apparently sparked Mr Smiths' rapid exit from the Northridge Greek Festival where he was on display in his LAPD uniform. It also has sparked dozens of phone calls from various Smith minions trying to nail down the source of the calls.

In an interesting twist, the caller id of at least some of the calls indicate that the calls originated from a waste company in the 949 area code. Double-cross? A new contender for the CD 12 seat? Dunno but this should get interesting.

Hat tip to the AOL buddy with the tip

Mayor Sam - sure you want to get involved with these waste guys? You ever watch the Sopranos?

"I'm the motherfucking fucking one who calls the shots."
-Tony Soprano

While that statement may be of questionable taste, its accuracy is indisputable. He tells the IRS that he's in the waste management business, but Anthony Soprano is the acting boss of the DiMeo family, the most powerful criminal organization in New Jersey. A second-generation wise guy, Tony is the son of the late Johnny Boy Soprano, a DiMeo capo who brought his boy into his profession and showed him the ropes. After Johnny's death, Tony was mentored by his old man's closest associates, Hesh Rabkin, Jackie Aprile, and Pussy Bonpensiero, as well as Johnny's older brother, Corrado "Junior" Soprano.

Is Antonio Villaraigosa linked to organized crime in Mexico? Mexican Mafia...his background has been a bit shady. Did he pursue office to launder money for the big bosses? It would be an easy way to do it, if in city hall, all of those contracts and transfer of funds. What a way to go Antonio, you have organized crime in your pockets...is this why tattood thugs surround you at certain office functions?

If Antonio would have had more field staffers like Robert the people wouldn't have been so critical. The problem was Antonio without a dobubt had the worst staff to be working with commnity members. They are arrogant, incompetent, uneducated and plain and simple morons. Pacheco's staff was one of the best. They truly cared and the constituents knew it. Things got done immediately and they had great follow up. They attended community meetings and actually thanked and appreciated the residents for showing up. You never got that from ADV's people. They would leave after 10 mins of being on their cell phones.

Roughly one-third of Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa's transition team lives outside Los Angeles, many of them in smaller, more affluent suburbs such as Pasadena, San Marino and Beverly Hills, the Daily Breeze reported. Villaraigosa's 82-member team, which will hold its first meeting today, is comprised of powerful leaders in L.A. politics, business, education, arts, media and religious life. But at least 26 of the transition team members have chosen to live in smaller communities – not in sprawling Los Angeles, with its population of 3.7 million.

THE SOPRANOS?

http://www.laweekly.com/ink/05/27/features-anderson.php

What about the Alatorre+ Villaraigosa+Vignali+Molina connection:

LA’s Underground Power Broker
The name Vignali receded into L.A. history after the “Pardongate” scandal of 2001, but questions remain about drug-dealing son Carlos and his real estate magnate father, Horacio, who just might be pulling the strings in the remaking of downtown L.A.

Tony Adams and his partner, Gerry Wehr, smelled something fishy when they arrived in Los Angeles back in 1994 to arrest Carlos Vignali, the target of one of Minnesota’s biggest drug cases. The Minneapolis narcotics officers had caught the 22-year-old Vignali on a wiretap conspiring to distribute crack cocaine in the Twin Cities. They checked into the Hilton on Grand Avenue under names known only to their local contacts at the DEA.

Within hours, they say, they received a call from defense lawyer Anthony Brooklier, who represented an alleged associate of Vignali. Strangely aware of how to contact the visiting officers, Brooklier, a high-paid mouthpiece for celebrities and accused gangsters, wanted to know what the officers were up to. Soon they would discover that Brooklier’s client had fingered not just Carlos Vignali but also Vignali’s father, Carlos “Horacio” Vignali, as major drug traffickers.

.....Today Adams and Wehr are back in the grind of smaller investigations in their relatively quiet northern state and are still steaming about their brush with the harsh realities of big-city law enforcement more than a decade ago. And Horacio Vignali — except to downtown insiders who are watching his real estate empire grow — is publicly shunned. He has been relegated to the history books for his effort to gain his son’s early release from prison, which drew support from a cadre of L.A. politicians, including Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa. Splashed on news pages four years ago in what became known as “Pardongate,” the story was reduced to a soundbite in Jim Hahn’s 2001 campaign, when he attacked Villaraigosa for coming to the aid of an unsavory drug dealer.

Now, as Villaraigosa prepares to lead the city, many other officials who supported the clemency effort remain players in the downtown political establishment. And so does father Vignali, one of the most powerful property owners of a nice chunk of downtown real estate primed to be developed in the continuing remake of downtown Los Angeles.

READ PART OF ARTICLE:

In a request for a restraining order filed on June 22, 2000, Siderman, a fellow Argentine, filed court declarations that during a business dispute in their conference room on June 21, 2000, Vignali became enraged and punched him in the ribs, forced him to the floor and threatened his life and that of his family. A month later, Siderman filed a civil complaint for damages. In court declarations in August 2000, he stated: “I declined to agree with Mr. Vignali regarding a specific business matter, at which point he became very agitated. He rose from his chair and began yelling profanities only inches from my face. He then proceeded to threaten my life and the lives and well-being of my family, yelling ‘I am going to kill you and your whole family. You don’t know who you are fucking with.’ I suggested that we end the meeting and consult our respective attorneys. Mr. Vignali responded by yelling, ‘I don’t need a lawyer. I’m going to solve it my way. I’ll just fucking kill you.’ ”

This all came about because Waste Management pulled out of the process.

Why?

Because a coalition of Antelope Valley leaders, elected and non-elected gave notice that they would oppose the Waste Management site near Palmdale. That made the Waste Management site D.O.A.

Without clearance for the site, Waste Management had no place to dump the refuse, therefore they had to withdraw from the bidding.

With Waste Management gone, the City had no other choice than to do a deal with BFI.

Clever Arnie Berhoff for stirring up the pot in the North and Antelope Valley.

Now, you loser CD 14ers can go back to libeling Antonio and everyone else who is a success, while you wallow in the gloom of yet another loss.

As one who fights BFI pretty hard, reading these posts make me glad I don't watch television. I doubt that I would be afraid to fight them even if they were like the Sopranos.

Big companies don't just pull out of contracts two days before the proposal goes to the Board of Public Works.

As for the person who said the reason WM pulled out was (besides clever Arnie stirring the pot-which he did do) because of a coalition of electeds and constituents in the Antelope Valley who opposed it, I have to ask why it is okay for Granada Hills to take trash from anywhere within the County? The residents in my community have been incredibly solid in their opposition. I suppose we should pressure our Supervisor for that answer.

I still find it really hard to believe that their combined opposition would prevent WM from getting clearance.

There is way more to this story than we are currently hearing. Collusion, definitely.

The only problem is it will take awhile to figure out who the collusion is between and we only have a short period of time.

In the meantime, we have to convince the Mayor and the Mayor Elect to keep their promise that they would not renew the City's residential trash contract with BFI.

There are other options/alternatives and the community of Granada Hills does not want to 'just put in someone else's back yard', so please don't even bring that one up. Only closed minded people think that.

We need progressive, out-of-the-box thinking to get out of this.

BFI should not hold us hostage because they're cheap.

Well you should be bothered, your doing nothing more than completing the screwing of the North Valley that Bernson started. Ever wonder why noone likes you? It isn't because your small... it's because your a pompous ass who is running the Council office for developers and trash companies.

The only thing Mr Smith cares about is more cops. Not that he is responsible for one single new cop in his district, but he can do what he does best, take credit for other peoples work. As for Mr Englander, he is just a pain in the ass and Mr Smiths largest liability but what the hell do I know, I am in CD14 where we have our own problems but no more about Antonio.

Who started the rumor that Mitch Englander was starting an investigation with the "feds"? Because all he said to me was that he was going to have the DA look at the tape of the phone call that went out to the district. He thought it could be illegal to not say who you were. The only tape though, has the beginning cut off.

But if he were to actually pay for an investigation, I agree with the anonymous poster who says they should instead start an investigation on why WM really pulled out at the last minute.

As a CD 12 constituent, I told everybody that Mitch was related to Harvey a couple of years ago. Perhaps nobody believed me. However, I was under the impression that they didn't work together at all, so does the blogger who claims that "these two clowns" are known for their dirty tricks, have any proof that they have worked together on these various issues?

I have no choice but to trust my council office right now as I have promised them I would and they have promised to be forward with me. I don't think I'm being naive, but if I'm am - I'll "get it" soon enough.

I just don't believe that there is nothing that we can do about the BFI contract and I want them to invest all their time from now until June 30th to come up with a creative solution.

And not just them. I want the Mayor and the Mayor Elect to do the same. They promised. There are other answers.

WHY is the Bureau of Sanitation forcing us to use BFI? Somebody must know.

June 02, 2005 2:12 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Mitch started floating the idea of continuing the contract with BFI months ago, and I really didn't think that his uncle was that big of a secret so to me this whole thing is a hysterical waste of time.

The idea that Harvey and Mitch don't talk would be ludicrous. You don't avoid someone as connected as Harvey. Harvey represents not just BFI but apparently also represents Wal Mart, another battle we are having in CD12 and getting no help from Mr Smiths office other than "nothing we can do"... people can draw their own conclusions if the connection is valid.

As for the pay to play link, what got Hahn in trouble was that he always had to defend facts that wouldn't go away. Wal Mart, Sunshine Harvey and Mitch won't go away either.

I like Greig, but for his Chief of Staff to call me and threaten me this weekend is over the top.

Where the hell he gets off screaming at constituents in City Hall or threatening the President of a Neighborhood Council is beyond me. Mr Englander is so worried about the next City Council campaign which he absolutly swears I am running for, that he isn't doing his job.

The answers to his fear is simple. Stand up for the people and do the right thing and you won't have to be worried about who may desire your seat on the council.

LA DAILY NEWS

Mystery calls rip Smith, landfill
By Kerry Cavanaugh, Staff Writer

A mystery phone message blasting Councilman Greig Smith and his chief of staff has injected new intrigue into the politics of trash and Sunshine Canyon Landfill.
Residents in Smith's 12th District reportedly received three phone calls in three hours Sunday evening, with the same message charging that Smith broke campaign promises to close Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

The message also suggested undue influence from Sunshine Canyon owners, Browning-Ferris Industries, because Smith's chief of staff, Mitchell Englander, is the nephew of BFI lobbyist Harvey Englander.

So far Smith's staff hasn't nailed down the source of the anonymous calls. But the councilman is considering filing a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission because the caller didn't disclose who was behind the call.

"It's unfortunate that this kind of stuff goes on today in politics. It's unnecessary and wrong. They're lying about the things I stand for and the things I'm doing."

One Granada Hills resident captured a phone number on her caller ID, and she researched it back to an Orange County company called American Waste Management and Junk to the Dump, which operates a small junk collection business.

Owner Davin Palitz was flabbergasted.

"I'm a three-man operation here. I have no idea about a landfill in Granada Hills. There's no possible way that could be my number."

Palitz said he can't dial out on the 949 area-code number that showed up on Granada Hills caller IDs. His 949 number simply forwards calls to his 714 area-code office.

The whole affair is very strange, said longtime Sunshine Canyon Landfill opponent Mary Edwards.

"It sounded to me that it was somebody who was going to run for political office against Greig. It was a fairly broad-brushed attack."

The phone calls come as the City Council is preparing to renew the city's trash disposal contract with Browning-Ferris Industries and Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

The city had gone through a nearly three-year process at the behest of Mayor James Hahn to find alternatives to the Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

I also know that I didn't tell you that about myself because 1. I've never said that, and 2. You are not part of my community group or you would know that Wade's name is spelled Wayde and that he and I differ often in our ideas. That's not exactly making him a sidekick here. But he is the president of the North Valley Coalition so I do work with him.

So here I am responding in my own name and telling the absolute truth while the anonymous one makes up a total lie. I could guess who you are, but I don't care enough to stay up late again.

Although... how will I sleep after that anonymous poster wrote that Antonio was thinking Arnie would make a good CLA.

I'm just laughing and thinking, "Good sense of humor. This is definitely someone joking with me."

Just so all of you know, the campaign promise Smith made in 2003 was the following:

"Candidates have pledged their opposition to the Sunshine Canyon Dump. I am the only candidate that has been consistently by the side of the North Valley Coalition since it was founded. I am the only candidate that has a proposal that will allow the City to stop using Sunshine and divert trash to more productive uses.
Concerns, and current law, dealing with the influence of lobbyists do not go far enough. We cannot just concern ourselves with elected officials, but must register lobbyists contracts with all city employees who have dealings with them. These records must be made public."

The sadest part of this is that there is no change in mentality. Even with all the promises made to reject the contract renewal, this is exactly where the city was in 1991.
Allowing dumps to grow larger and larger, right near people while the rest of the WORLD has better alternatives to deal with trash is sad, pathetic.
The city has known about alternatives for over ten years and still nothing was done, except talk and study. While the years dwindled away opportunites have passed and again we are right back to the city and politicians telling us there are no other choices.
To all those that volunteer on campaigns and promote your candidate, it should be clear to everyone that a promise can be broken.
Though most don't think highly of politicians in general, it is sad to trust one and be disappointed in the end.
From this we must all learn not to make that mistake again.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitchell.

You will never win a CD 12 seat.

Get it out of your head right now.

Do us all a favor and go back to your old job.

How stupid can you be..

Is Englander such a common name that you can't figure out that Harvey & Mitch are related?

And..so what if they are. Can you find one shred of proof that they have ever done anything wrong..Not that you may not agree with what they might or might not be doing..what is what they are doing wrong?

It seems that these guys are just a lot smarter than you are...because you are always bitching about what they are doing...while you're just observers.

To paraphrase: Those that can..do. Those that can't...blog.
