Major Monday Momentum

Today the Daily News does some extensive stories on the Mayor's race. Rick Orlov should get double-time for all the news he's had to generate during this campaign.

Daily News also asks - Where is Bob?

Who will Bob Hertzberg endorse, the City waits, Hertzberg may in fact be worth several points to both sides hoping to build that Monday Morning Momentum.

As for whose building it today, Tony Villar is scheduled to release a major endorsement today. Word is Richard Riordan will be in attendance and it will be in the Valley.

Any thoughts?

What a Hobson's Choice for Huggy:

Sit it out and be on the sidelines for the next four or eight years while Antonio is Mayor, or face the wrath of the Dragon Lady?

Is it any wonder why he hasn't endorsed Antonio as yet?

Endorsing Jimmy will make him the hypocrite of the year, so that's out.

I'm not waiting to see which he does because, frankly, I don't think it matters.

Antonio has already knocked the pins out of one side of the coalition that elected Jimmy last time around. Most Blacks will either vote for Antonio or stay home this time, based upon the slew of endorsements for Antonio.

Now the Valeey is choosing up sides, and the most that Jimmy can say is that it is even up, with Antonio having the momentum.

So, with or without Hertzberg, Antonio, who is far ahead in the polls, far ahead in meaningful endorsements, and far ahead now in fundraising, looks like the winner.

I believe that Hertzberg sees the train leaving the station, and he doesn't want to be left behind. He'll risk it, even if it means his wife may push him off when he's not looking.

More and more, every day, Jimmy looks like he's a dead man walking.

Now it looks like he's walking on the train tracks...

Totally wrong poster. AV's record is being spread around the city. Many voters had no idea about AV's record supporting gangbangers. The CNN report on Homicides in Hollenbeck shows voters AV could care less about his own district. The media is now being pressured to start reporting the facts on AV's record. Voters don't want a mayor who supports gangs and illegal vendors. Blacks are afraid AV will give favortism to Latinos. Say what you want this race is still on and Hahn will come out as he did in 2001.

Yes, it's Bob Hertzberg endorsing Villaraigosa today.

maybe not 7:36;

The Villaraigosa website says the announcement today is at the 24 hr Sports Fitness in Sherman Oaks. Here's what comes up when you google that facility...

24 Hour Fitness, a global leader in health and fitness, joined forces with basketball superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson today to celebrate the grand opening of the first Los Angeles area, 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Club. Located in the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Sherman Oaks, Calif.,

Maybe you are right 7:58. But I don't think Magic would a) endorse Villaraigosa, and b) do it in the Valley.

Huggy will endorse Villaraigosa. The pressure from his money men is too great to resist.

I think the Magic poster is correct. I've known for over a week that Magic was coming aboard, but no leaks about Huggy.

In fact, I was with one of Huggy's, and now Antonio's, main money guys yesterday and he didn't say a word or even hint about it.

No, bet your house om Earvin, who is getting a twofer by advertising his new affiliation with 24 hour fitness.

Bye the bye, wouldn't you say that all the big black names are aligned now, and Jimmy seems to have been left in the dust?

How will he build the coalition upon which he relied in 2001 without that leg?

How will he cobble together a solid Valley vote in light of his huge opposition to secession?

Remember, that's how he got in so much trouble, Stein, Wong, Edwards and others armtwisting to raise money to beat back the Valley.

Laura Chick, Richard Close and other leaders are already signed on with Antonio, others are coming aboard daily. Jill Barad and Nate and Wendy Brogin are doing a biggie in the Valley at the end of the month. Who will be left for Jimmy and his coalition?

All the mud Jimmy is throwing is old news, and despite the vehemence of the bloggers on this site, no one wants to print that crap. It may have worked last time, but this time, Parke isn't running that end, it is Ace, and he can dish dirt with the best of them.

James Kenneth Hahn, R.I.P.

Three debates is enough for the presidential election, why not the Mayor of LA?

In the primary, there were forty debates; Antonio attended each and every one. Jimmy came to six.

Now that he is getting his butt kicked around the block, Jimmy has awakened and wants a chance to debate some more. If I were Antonio, I'd ignore him and let him do it the old fashioned way, one vote and one buck at a time.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

By the way, do you anti-Antonios who are so fixated on CD 14 really think that the general populace cares about murders in CD 14? They just see that as bad guys killing other bad guys, and if anything, blame the Mayor's Police Department.

Last time I looked, there is no CD 14 Police Department, and CD 14 was still in the City of Los Angeles.

Find some other trash to gin up, this one's going nowhere.

We are fixated on CD14 because that's where we live and Antonio Villaraigosa is our council member. And if the general populace isn't concerned about our issues now, they soon will be if Antonio is mayor - because every other district will be run the way he runs CD14.

April 11, 2005 9:30 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

The real problem is that any Councilmember is very limited as to what he can do in his district.

Yes, he can somewhat control planning issues, but when it comes to allocation of resources, like fixing potholes, he has to rely on the Mayor's Public Works people, run by Ellen Stein, Ted Stein's wife. Guess who she supports?

And, when it comes to Police support, he has to rely on the Mayor's Police Department, headed by Bill Bratton, the Mayor's personal pick. Guess who he supports?

While it is entirely possible that CD 14 is getting the short end of the stick, and even that it is because of Antonio's opposition of Jimmy, it is still not within Antonio's power to do much about it.

Your beef should be with the Mayor, his name is Jimmy Hahn. Settle it with him, if you can find him.

Mostly, your best chance is from about 10:30 A.M. to noon and from 2:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M., unless you wait on the Harbor Freeway and catch him driving home to San Pedro after 2:30 P.M.

Take a number.

Good luck.

If Magic endorses Antonio then it just means he is just out of touch with his people. Last time Magic came out to support Parks people called into 24Hr Fitness Corporate offices and stirred it up. There was a boycott of the fitness centers and you better believe that will happen again if he endorses Antonio.

So, CD14's general populace isn't concerned about "bad people killing bad people."

You ever hear of "drive-bys?" You ever hear of "innocent bystanders?"

You ever hear the moans and and wails of a good, hard-working single mother, who's handling two jobs just to keep her kids fed, and finds out the "good" son just got TAKEN OUT -- the one who was getting straight A's at City College and wanted to be a doctor or program computers - because the one she lost control of, or his cousin, or some kid next door who looks a bit like he had been targeted by a rival gang for a bad dope deal?

You ever seen the bullet holes in an innocent neighbor's bed headboard -- one who narrowly escaped death -- because some "bad guy" is also dyslexia, and wrote down the other "bad guys" house number wrong?

You ever felt the blood race to the back of your head when the sirens scream dowm the main drag near your house at 3 a.m. on a Saturday night and wonder, do I KNOW who just got murdered, does his family go to my church, or do I buy groceries from them?

(Probably not, ADV sure hasn't -- nor has he spoken about them - lately). BUT, he sure did when there were even less, under his predecessor. THAT was a crime, THAT was terrible. THAT was something a 'Better' (sarcasm by me) CM (like ADV) would fix.

Now he's going to be a 'Better' mayor, than Hahn. See any pattern there?

Promise them anything, but give them your backside once elected -- that's the ADV way. . .

L.A. will have bigger better promises under an ADV mayor, but only get bigger, more expensive problems.

So, what the "general populace" really isn't listening to is rationalizers like you -- pissy little sissy Westsiders listing to gangster rap on their Beamer sound systems, telling US what the populace cares about? We'll "go there" just as long as the guy who "promised" CD14 would do better on homicides under his "care" is running for the city's top job. These homicides are ISSUE #1 and they will be talked about here, at community meetings, and NC boards -- and we'll make it known every day, the name of the man who said we "deserved better" and provided WORSE -- ANTONIO "ALL BROKEN PROMISES" VILLARAIGOSA.

April 11, 2005 9:51 AM

Last blogger said: "The real problem is that any Councilmember is very limited as to what he can do in his district."

FUNNY, that's not what CM-CANDIDATE Villaraigosa said? He never said Pacheco was "limited" in what he could do in the district (judging by results, he was LESS limited). Why change the tone now -- with Pacheco it was "negligence" -- so what is it with ADV, now that homicides are MORE?

Because NOW people are pointing out that HOMICIDES are up, and some are remembering that was a MAJOR promise (another one) for ADV in 2003.

When he was running he could "FIX" it; now that he's trying to LEAVE -- you say it's the fault of the "mayor's" police dept. (WHY are homicides DOWN citywide, under the LAPD, then!?)

99 percent of the "projects" outlined in ADV's 12- and 18-month reports are leftovers from the last administration, NONE were completed... is he SAVING the VISION, for the next job? L.A. better HOPE so.

His chief of staff rags that the guy they replaced didn't FINISH the projects, and it's taken them TWO YEARS to move them ahead. But at least HE started some. What has ADV even STARTED in TWO YEARS?

SO, please list the "new" projects, that visionary ADV has started (for the next guy to "finish" maybe?) How about NONE.

(LA TIMES - February; ADV has introduce only ONE initiative in two years in city council, and IT is still in COMMITTEE.) Not better for the city as a WHOLE, either?)

Will he be leaving his heir apparent only MORE Pacheco-started projects to complete, NO ADV-started projects (YES!). How about the ONLY project started and finished by ADV while CM has been ONE -- RUN FOR MAYOR (on our tax dollars).

SO, what did he mean by "CD14 deserved BETTER" two years ago, is he is SO limited (and I don't mean his intelligence)? He MUST have meant they deserved someone who really just wanted a "BETTER job" and would spend his time on the clock for the district getting that. OR maybe he meant they needed a city councilmember would would spend his time trying to get us a BETTER president (how did that work out?)

He MUST have been misquoted in his campaign materials two years ago -- he MUST have meant "I DESERVE BETTER" and so I'm going to run for mayor again, while pretending to be your city councilman.

I think the city BETTER take a pass on ADV's idea of what BETTER for us, until he does a BETTER job of learning to tell the truth.

This thread is about endorsements, not about Antonio doing drive-by shootings of innocent victims.

Next we'll see Jimmy's famous crack-pipe commercial?

How did Antonio feel when his son came home from school and asked him if he was a crack dealer, like all the kids were saying? Was that fair game?

No guys, the trashing won't work this time. Antonio is past it, and one way or another, this wil backfire on whoever spreads these rumors.

Just ask Ricardo Torres, III and Nick Pacheco how they are doing.

April 11, 2005 10:23 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Torres. Wasn't he the guy who "trashed" Villaraigosa by sending out privately funded mailers saying ADV would just use CD14 as a launch pad for the next job, not complete the job, not stay around long?

That he shouldn't be trusted to keep his promises?

That he really didn't care about CD14 (how much have homicides increased since ADV said the district "deserved better" -- 30 percent??)

(Oh, yeah, Torres threw in some nasty personal stuff too -- he probably thought they would help make the point, but I think ADV's two years as CM make the points very well, without the personal trach... the leopard doesn't change it spots).

How many of those "spots" materialized in the past 24 months?

(Pretty much all of them!)

April 11, 2005 10:33 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Yeah, and how many spots will he transfer to the next job? How about 100 percent.

That tv ad was the truth and Antonio is trying to spin it was racist. It wasn't racist to all the Latinos who have to deal with drugs and gangs in the community that Antonio promised he would help. His #1 priority running for CM was public safety. Since then he hasn't done a damn thing. He hasn't said a word about the crime in his own district. We have a nice little surprise coming very soon to be released for Lil Tony and his campaign team. It will let the city know why this two time loser should not be elected mayor. Since the media isn't doing it then we have to take matters into our own hands.
