Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Monday

The Real Republican
Jim Newton profiles "Republican" mayoral candidates Austin Beutner and Rick Caruso.  Last I heard Beutner was registered decline to state and rumor is Caruso has or is re-registering as a Democrat.  Newton fails to mention actual Republican Kevin James, who has the backing of most Republican power players in LA.  He also says that Villaraigosa's victory against "goofy" Walter Moore "doesn't count" even though Moore and several other "goofy" candidates with little money and no name ID held the overfunded and popular incumbent to just 55% of the vote.

Apparently bloggers Joseph Mailander and Phil Jennerjahn have found an interesting way to amuse themselves - they will bet on whether or not Republican Sarah Palin will run for President.  Jennerjahn is convinced the former Alaska Governor will drop her hat into the ring; Mailander is putting his money on that Palin will remain on the book and talk TV circuit that's been so lucrative for her.  Mailander and Jennerjahn tried to get me involved in their reindeer games, holding their funds and being the final arbiter, I have politely declined.

Speaking of Mailander, for years he's advocated the use of yurts as housing for the homeless.  So far housing officials have yet to take up this suggestion, however a yurt has been temporarily erected on the City Hall lawn in celebration of Mongolian heritage.

Angeles Crest Highway, closed for a year following damage after the Station Fire, has finally been re-opened.  Motorcyclists and others are thrilled.

Palin will show she is smart and NOT run for POTUS, at least this time around.

She needs to build on her credentials.... write op/eds etc... before she can be taken seriously outside of the Republican Party.

If she's smart, she will get behind a candidate early and say she is not running because she believes candidate X is the right candidate for our time etc. Then get out there and campaign until she has blisters on her feet for the candidate.
She would increase her value in the party and on the talk circuit.

Romney/Bachmann 2012 would beat Obama/Biden in a landslide.

Romney is the only Republican that scares the DEMS because he is similar to Obama but has an economics background and is for the most part socially conservative.

Bachmann will be a force in the Republican party for 10-12 more years.

Newton is correct on all counts. It wasn't Goofy Walter Moore that people were voting for, it was the Other Name.

It he was a legitimate contender, people would have been talking about him for the 2012 election. But nobody ever did, or ever will.

Kevin James has no chance; why does he insist in being a gadfly? He loses me as a listener. How many more?

Does he even live in LA?

Palin couldn't write a decent op-ed if her life depended on it. Romney/Bachman a landslide over Obama/Biden? Are you effen drunk Trojan 2000?

11:04... 4 years ago when us senator with a little over 3 years of experience, no name, no history, no legislative accomplishments at any level, with connections to a terrorist, a crook, and an anti-american pastor, decided to run against HRC... he was called drunk too.

Point being... if an inexperienced, ill-prepared, anti-free market, corrupt politician like Obama win, why can't a man with real world financial experience and 4 successful years as governor win, especially with a VP partner in Bachmann who has legislative experience, great idea, and small town folk experience?

Read the Book of Mormon - that's why Romney won't win. Plus the argument can be mnade that Romney is an anchor baby since his grandfather and father were born in Mexico.

You read this Hotsheet and comments and you get no clue as to what is going on at City Hall or in the city. Talking about a newspaper article that didn't mention Kevin James doesn't count. They pulled the plug on Karen Ann Quinlan at some point.

Palin is great at making excuses. Her response to her Paul Revere comments is that it was a "gotcha" question. She needs to grow up and toughen up. If you can't handle questions like that you aren't qualified to hold public office. There just aren't that many people who believe that the word, and intelligent people, are out to get her. She needs to spend the next few months at summer school taking 5th grade history.

Actually, before 1960 they said that aobut Catholics. And, more recently, about blacks.

We need a gay female Mormon who has Asian blood.

Then we might almost be done unless we can get a Mexican Jewish VP who is Bi and used to be a woman.

Yeah but Catholics don't believe that the black race is beyond salvation, as Mormon doctrine dictates.

And you almost hit it on the head with the Mexican Jewish VP - Antonio Villar. You can't say he used to be a woman, but he was a man at one time before he sold out every shred if dignity that he had.
