Mayor Sam Candidate Endorsements: Anyone But Englander for CD12

This is the next in a series of posts where JoeB and I will give our endorsements for candidates for LA City Council and School Board. Where there is agreement we will give the official MayorSam endorsement to the candidate. Next up is CD12. For each post we will give both Joe's endorsement and mine along with our comments. The choices in CD12 are:

JoeB: Anyone but Mitch Englander. Englander is the big money, business as usual, anointed one. He's the last person CD12 needs as their representative.

Michael Higby: CD12 has had a strange oligarchic like tendency to promote the reigning chief deputy to Council when the current member retired. No more, Mitchell Englander, is nothing but a job climber whose every action from joining community organizations to becoming a reserve police officer was calculated for this run. Brad Smith on the other hand is a true blue community organizer, more in line with the mood in that community. Smith apparently scared Englander so much the Englander campaign tried to get Smith fired from his job. That says volumes. Vote for Smith!

Verdict: One for anyone but Englander, One for Smith

Englander is the prince who wants to ascend to the throne. I hope Brad Smith, Kelly Lord and company can banish him from the kingdom.
The power of money and non involvement by the voters make it tough.
The hutzpah of listing his profession as a policeman provides insight into his character.

A losing battle for Higby; Englander wins it in the primary.

Englander is a carpetbagger. He didn't even move from Glendale to Granada Hills until AFTER becoming CD 12 chief of staff, for which he is paid $155,000. He should be tarred and feathered and run out of town....

I ENDORSE ARMINEH CHELBIAN THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO IS WALKING AND MEETING THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY. SHE'S THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO WILL NOT FAVOR DEVOPERS OVER THE COMMUNITY. SHE WILL HAVE FIELD REPS TO GET THE INFORMATION ON THE STREET NOT HAVE A FIELD OFFICES WHERE DISTRICT REPS STAY DAY BY DAY. SHE WILL OPEN UP THE OFFICE TO THE COMMUNITY. THE CANDIDATES WITH GOOD IDEAS WILL NOT BE LOST THOUGH'S IDEAS WILL BE PUT TO WORK IN THE COMMUNITY. SHE WILL DO WHAT KELLY LORD AND BRAD SMITH TALK ABOUT AND DON'T DO. SHE IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO WILL ADDRESS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WHO BETTER THAN A NATURALIZED CITIZEN. SHE WILL USE HER SKILLS AS A AUDITOR/ACCOUNTANT TO REVIEW HOW MONEY IS SPENT AND WHERE WE CAN SAVE. SHE WILL ADRESS FIXING SIDEWALKS AND STREETS GO AFTER THE FUNDS TO TAKE CARE OF OUR BASIC SERVICES. SHE WILL CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL BRING IN NEW GOOD PAYING JOBS BY CUTTING TAXES TO SMALL BUSINESS AND JOINING WITH SCHOOLS TO CREATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF WELL PAYED WORKERS. LOOK INTO HER SHE'S GOT A LIST TO RECOMEND HER. IT'S NOT JUST SMALL TALK IT TAKES ACTION, SHE WILL DELIVER.

I've attended all the CD12 Forums, and have been appalled by Mitch Englander's arrogance. Last night the twit actually had the gall to offer one of the candidates who questioned the high pay of $154,000paid to the Chief of Staff, the job when he is elected Councilman. He continued with his nonsense of creating jobs through the discredited Enterprise Zones, and added that the area had the only industrial zones in the city.

I'd say that any candidate is better than the annointed one, but Brad Smith is the best candidate.

WHAT MAKES BRAD SMITH THE BEST CANDIDATE? TALK? WE NEED PEOPLE WHO GET OUT OF THEIR CARS FOR 5 MINS TO TALK TO THE COMMUNITY. PEOPLE WHO AREN'T BOTHERED OR WASTING THEIR TIME TO ASK YOU WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. BRAD ISN'T GOING TO DO THAT. BUT ARMINEH IS AND WILL. WE NEED LEADERS NOT FOLLOWERS. brad misses half the nc meetings anyway wake up!

Brad Smith is one of us. He has lived, attended school, and worked in the North Valley his entire life. He is a Navy war vet who went to college on the GI bill and has spent a lifetime paying it back to his community. His family continues to live here and his kids all attend public school.

Can any other candidate boast of such roots to the community?

Pity we are probably about to witness the coronation of King Englander the First.

FWIW, Smith missed three GHSNC board meetings in 2010; two were excused and one was unexecused, according to GHSNC minutes posted on their website. Not that it should matter, but friends and family know there was an illness and then death in the family in the same period. For an unpaid volunteer position held by someone who works for a living, .08 percent "unexcused" absences hardly seems impeachable, but apparently others disagree.

Actually, 8 percent (one-twelth), but still not bad...how many quorum calls has Greig Smith missed in the last year?

Englander isn't going to win it in the Primary.

Most people know what all his money is about. He's only fooling the very elderly and very hard core Republican. The rest of the district isn't buying it.

For a moment, I thought Smith had a shot at this seat. Then he pulled a Perot... that's why Mitch will win outright on Tuesday.
As I've said before, CD12 is a different district. The voters for the most part are OLD, the community leaders are for the most part OLD... CD12 is like Middle East autocratic country.
12K people will vote, most of them at some point had some interaction with one of the candidate, most of them though have had some exchange with Mitch, Greig Smith, and/or Hal Benson.
I just got a letter in the mail telling me about all of the great leaders in my area who are supporting Mitch... not a single person under the age of 50. These folks want to cling to their proximity of power and that's why CD12 will not be a part of the 21st century in the next 4 years.
Most of these "community leaders" are full of themselves and think they're big shots just because they sit on a NC and have spoken with Greig Smith or Cameron Smythe.

These old folks are also the ones who want maximum service w/o paying for any. They understand very little about land use issues and would never fathom what Englander's half a million + dollars from developers will do to their community. They will complain alright and expect the younger members to do the running around, attending the City Hall meetings and fighting the developments project by project. Let them live next to multiple-family and their sweet boy can protect them. HA, ha, ha.

Smiley, the only way to not witness the coronation of King Englander the First is to get out today and tomorrow and phone bank and walk neighborhoods for Brad Smith. Get out the vote!

12:40 says: He continued with his nonsense of creating jobs through the discredited Enterprise Zones, and added that the area had the only industrial zones in the city.

Isn't that telling of how Mitchell feels about small businesses?

Does he really not know that CD 12 is NOT the only area that has industrial zones? What about the industrial zones in Sun Valley or Sylmar? Isn't the current CLARTS fight in CD 14 located in an industrial area?

Is he just a big liar?

Anyone who votes for Mitchell Englander is either uninformed about issues or is part of the problem there.
