Brown vs Whitman Debate Tonight

The momentary equalizer in today's world of mega-million politics is that no amount of money, spin, or campaign commercials, can protect you once the cameras start rolling in a live debate. You're on your own. Naked as a jaybird. The down side is that the debate is only for an hour, it will be watched by a relative few, yet the mind numbing campaign commercials will continue 24/7.

The first debate between gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown will be held this evening from 6-7pm on the campus of UC Davis. You can view the debate online by following the links at the UC Davis official site.

UPDATE: Feel free to add your post debate analysis.

How come no mention that the San Fran Chronicle decided to not endorse Barbara Boxer, as they have for each of her prior campaigns?

Naked as a jaybird? That is one nasty visual for either of these candidates.

10:02, you beat me to the punch! Joe? What is the answer? Why haven't you written about the Chron's refusal to endorse Boxer?

Everyone here knows that you'd have been pissing in your panties if it was the other way around. You did that almost hourly during the 2008 campaign.

Remember when Jerry debated Pete Wilson and thought he was going to show up Pete Wilson's lack of knowledge about world affairs by asking him about an obscure U.N. resolution on Namibia? Wilson answered thoughtfully and knowledgeably and Jerry looked like he'd swallowed castor oil. One of the funniest moments in debate history. Maybe Jerry can do it again.

what i heard: I'm Governor "Moonbeam" Jerry Brown
I got green jobs in the desert for you gullible voters: building windmills, digging to the earth's core for heat and building mirrors to harness the sun.
I got every kind of union supporting me, because I am the meaning of the phrase "Political machine." My Dad rose to the top of the machine and drug me after him silver spoon flopping out of my mouth.
What is more I will enforce your death penalty law even though I refused to support your popular vote for our constitutional amendment, prop. 8 banning gay marriage. I'm Brown and you better vote for me because I am old, and because I'm married now. Jezebel won't let me barhop all night, so I need something else to do. Plus, we have to move. Our Oakland neighborhood I mayored is to dangerous with nine murders this year, ok?

If Meg spent $120 million on her campaign, she could esily have spent a couple of million on her face. That would have been money well spent. She has got to be the worst looking billionaire in the nation.

Brown totally outclassed her. Experience trumps money any time.

From SFGate-

Whitman, a disciplined candidate who has stayed relentlessly on message during the campaign, at times appeared over-rehearsed. On several occasions she ignored specific questions and launched into her campaign talking points.

In the first question, Whitman was asked how she would jump-start the state budget process - now at a record 91-day delay - but instead talked about the need for welfare reform and pension reform until pressed for an answer by Sacramento Bee political editor Amy Chance.

Whitman said that "we must start earlier on the budget," calling for structural reforms including a two-year budget cycle.

Brown called for starting the process "the week after the election," bringing together all 120 legislators and involving them directly in the discussions.

He said he has called for cuts of 15 to 20 percent in the budgets of the governor's and attorney general's office. "I challenge the Legislature to do the same," he said. "I know how to do it. I have the willpower, I have the independence."

Asked about her spotty voting record, Whitman immediately aimed to put to rest an issue that has dogged her from the start.

"I apologize to everyone in California, and no one is more embarrassed by it than me," she said, quickly moving on to explain her decision to run for governor and her record-breaking campaign investment - $119 million of her own money.

-SHE'S TOAST!

Norman,

Even your view with blinders is still better than what Meg offered. Her claim to fame is her tenure at E-Bay, yet her boss doesn't even give her a letter of recommendation for her next gig.

Meg looked like a bag lady - it takes a lot of work to have Jerry Brown look better than you.

Nut Meg started selling her campaign furniture and equipment on Ebay tonight. Is she an entreprenuer or what?

She's bebholden to nobody except maybe Goldman Sachs and her other country club friends.

Jerry is beholden to working people.

hmmmmmmmmm. who should I vote for?

I think Walter Moore had a good point. There were six more candidates registered with the state. Not one of you seems to be interested in anything they could have contributed to this debate. They need equal air time.
