As the last minutes of darkness that was Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's first term gives way to the dawn of his second term. What words, catch phrases,ahhh cliches await the few, connected, and curious that will descend on the South Lawn of City Hall, to view the swearing-in of the Mayor and other city officials ??
And what is the Mayor's gift to Angelinos on this day of "career political regression" ?? A TAX HIKE!!, thanks to Villar's Measure R.
Los Angeles Times City Hall Scribe Phil Willon has the talking points on the Mayor's goals for his second term.
"Job creation will top the agenda of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's second and final term in office, which begins today when he is officially sworn in on the south steps of City Hall.
Villaraigosa also will call for a crackdown on the city's failing schools, vowing to work in concert with his political allies on the Los Angeles Unified School District board to find "competitive alternatives," including charter schools, to clean house and take control of subpar campuses, according to some of the mayor's top aides."

"Szabo and five of the mayor's top aides on Tuesday offered a general preview of Villaraigosa's agenda for the next four years, which also will focus on upcoming transit projects, his continuing campaign to expand the Police Department and transform L.A. into a "green city," they said."

None of the Los Angeles police officers accused of using excessive force on demonstrators and journalists at a 2007 May Day gathering at MacArthur Park will be fired, officials said Tuesday.
Police Chief William J. Bratton had sought to punish 11 officers and called for the termination of four others by sending them to disciplinary panels for their involvement in the melee, which has cost the city $13 million in legal settlements.
On Tuesday, Bratton said that the internal disciplinary boards had concluded their work and that the maximum penalty imposed was a 20-day suspension for one officer.
"Ultimately it is up to the board, and that has been the way it has been for generations," Bratton said.
HMMM, and how much money could have the city saved in settlement costs if the likes of Bratton, Villar, and other members of the pandering, political class had ceased their initial retoric and let the investigations run its course ??

Board Backs Councilmember Huizar’s Plan to Tie Autry Expansion to Binding Agreement on the Southwest Museum Councilmember says community needs legal assurances that Southwest Museum will be reopened
LOS ANGELES (June 30, 2009) - Councilmember José Huizar’s proposal today to link the Autry Museum’s planned 79,000 square-foot expansionin Griffith Park to a legal agreement to restore and reopen Mt. Washington’s Southwest Museum enjoyed unanimous support today at a Board of Referred Powers hearing, chaired by Councilmember Janice Hahn.
Speaking to a standing-room only crowd gathered in Council chambers to listen to arguments regarding the Autry’s proposed lease agreement and Environmental Impact Report for the Griffith Park expansion, Councilmember Huizar praised the Autry for demonstrating its commitment to the restoration of the Southwest Museum, including investing more than $7.5 million in building renovations and upgrades since purchasing it in 2003. But the Councilmember said the time has come to put those commitments in writing by agreeing to a legally binding document attached to a lease agreement the Autry is seeking in order to expand its Griffith Park Autry Museum.
“While I believe that the Autry is acting in good faith when it says it is committed to renovating the Southwest Museum, I think the community deserves to have a binding commitment in writing to ensure that they and future generations enjoy one of Los Angeles most treasured cultural institutions,” said Councilmember Huizar.

The Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition have given Jose Huizar a "come to Jesus" moment. For the last few years, Huizar totally disrespected his own constituents who are UNITED behind preservation of this priceless piece of Los Angeles history. Huizar participated with the Mayor and the Autry in a press conference where they patted each other on the back and FALSELY claimed that a mere memorandum signed by Autry CEO John Gray constituted some kind of "victory" for the community. It was NOT. They knew it. The Coalition knew it.
Now the Mayor and Huizar have been SLAPPED silly by a MASS of constituent discontent with their arrogance toward their own history and cultural institution.
Huizar may have finally risen to his feet to state the obvious: that his "deal" from 2 years ago is not enough, but there is no assurance that he has what it takes to get Autry to the table. He and the Mayor were seduced by all the Autry lobbyists. The people have just reminded them that such a seduction imperils their political future if they go so far as disrespect the artifacts of their ancestors and the heritage of their community.
I notice that the words "illegal immigration" were conveniently left out of the Mayors agenda for his next term.
I guess the City and State have no use for the billions of dollars that could be saved in providing housing and welfare to those who have violated our nations laws.
It looks like at least three of the Mayors former rivals in the March election will be there today to keep an eye on him.
I wonder how he is going to feel if the cheers and applause for Nuch Trutanich are many times louder and much more impressive than for the Mayor.

For the next 4 years I foresee AV:
1. finding a new telebimbo
2. under investigation for numerous violations from several different agencies
3. crying in public
4. unable to "man-up" and informing on his co-horts
5. subject of a personal lawsuit

We have the biggest clown in the Nation being sworn in. With the budget deficit he still has 17 deputy mayors, over 93 staffers, 26 city vehicles, security, entourage, 4 press people and not one laid off. I noticed not one lazy ass reporter had the guts to report how much this big celebration is costing the tax payers. There are using police, fire, dept. of transportation, city services, city staffers and more. How tacky to have Derek Fisher as the emcee. ITs either desperation cause no one wanted the job or Antonio's people have no class and should have gotten someone more appropriate. Could the Doug McIntyre show yesterday making fun of Kobe not wanting Antonio on Laker bus during parade had something to do with this??
Was Tony Cardenas' Deputy Mayor on city time when he went to support the gang banger Alex Sanchez bail hearing yesterday? This Sanchez has them all fooled. He's a notorious MS 13 evil man and is playing victim to the same idiots who always cry foul when gang bangers are arrested.
.....Among those who made it inside the hearing were Mario de la Rocha, deputy to City Council member Tony Cardenas, former state senator Tom Hayden and Minister Tony Muhammad of the Nation of Islam, who was accompanied by a couple of his bow-tie-wearing Fruit of Islam body guards.

Yes it will be live on ch 35 as well as the internet (lacity.org) and probably on some local channels, although they will not broadcast two hours of hot air windbags as they usually do.

Yes, Huizar had the best spinout from yesterday's BRP hearing -- looking like (well, GENE AUTRY), riding to the rescue the damsel in distress in one of those old B&W films.
But when you really look at what he's asking them for, it basically boils down to:
"give a dog a bone..."
Enough to say he moved the needle, but not enough to guarantee a permanent, fully functional museum at the original location.
Autry will push back, and end up "agreeing" (legally) to the same things they already said they would do, as "their" compromise -- keep a few small exhibit spaces open in refurbished "Old Southwest" halls, while the bulk of the museum's collection will prop up the hollow legacy of the "New Southwest" in GP.
Then, some years from now, when NO ONE comes to the Old SW any more (because they can see so much more in Griffith), Autry will claim hardship, say they're subsidizing a unprofitable Mt. Wash. campus, and get another team of Councilmembers to release them from their pacts.
It's nothing more than delay of game, which Huizar knows, but the hubbub will die down until Jose isn't on this playing field anymore.
It's not in the Autry's best interests to let the Southwest museum wither and die...

Rotating parts of its permanent and perhaps, visiting collections into the Southwest makes good business sense; it also serves as a cross-promotional opportunity to drive visitors to both locations.
What's not in the Autry's best interest is to have terms dictated to it when it's the only entity with "skin in the game."
If they really wanted to play hardball, they'd offer the Southwest Museum Coalition an option to buy back the collection and the property for the original cost, plus improvements.
This would be called the "put up or shut up" option. It will never happen, because...
1. The Coalition can't raise that kind of money.
2. If they could raise the money, they'd be selling the whole shebang back to the Autry at pennies on the dollar in about 5 years.
The "Huizar Compromise" basically says make an honest woman out of the Southwest by signing a marriage certificate agreeing to make its best efforts care for the Southwest... in "sickness and in health?" And right now, the best chance the Southwest museum has for health IS the ANC.
Unless, the Southwest Museum Coalition puts its (or other people's) money where its mouth is.

I learned something in the hard knocks of real business -- the "value" of something is what people are REALLY willing to pay for it, and how much they actually need it -- not some vague pie-in-the-sky price-tag number the seller comes up with.
Numerous Autry supporters pointed out yesterday that Autry was the only one willing to pay for the Southwest Collection, and restore it. True, because they had the most severe need for a "real" museum collection, and that also means no on else really needs it.
It's "value" in real dollars is only that to the Autry.
The Autry would never play the "we'll sell it back" bluff, because their entire future as a museum entity rests on commercializing Charles Lummis' legacy. Without it, the only thing left for them to show in their B-1 bomber-sized hangar at Griffith Park WOULD be "old dusty saddles." (And, the Friends of the SW Museum collection has shown that they also understand this reality of life).
As long as Autry needs the collection (and it's not like there are a lot of massive, American West-related museum collections out there for sale, anyway), they will have to keep working with the City and community --assuming they can't get a whole lot more of our local politicians' constituents to become bought-and-paid-for toadies like the
