You Might Want to Call Your Council Member

09-0030 CD 9 b. MOTION (PERRY - REYES) relative to declaring the 51st Annual Grammy Awards on February 8, 2009 a Special Event (fees and costs absorbed by the City = $124,163).

You're raising our parking meter fees, our DWP rates and our sales taxes and you're giving the Grammy Awards $124,163.  Yes, we all know how much money these events pump into the economy.  Lets pump in a little more and let THE GRAMMYS pay their own way, not the taxpayers.

This is Why The City Of San Fernando is Recalling 2 Councilmembers in their small town. Looks like we should learn from the residents of that small city.

Does anyone know who those people are, maybe we can hire them to recall our Council?

This is one of those things that looks worse than it is. The level of tourism dollars brought into LA because of its image as the entertainment capital of the world far outweighs the costs of this event.

New york City, or many other cities for that matter, would love nothing more than to get all the attention that these awards shows generate.

It is an investment in LA. So when you call your councilmember, be sure to tell them BRAVO!

January 09, 2009 12:58 PM

Blogger Michael Higby said:

12:58 - we know the "investment" spin. But the point of investment is that you put up money with some risk to get a potential benefit. The city will get the benefit even if it doesn't put up the money. The Grammys built themselves a nice new theatre (with taxpayer money) so they are not going anywhere. There is no need to "invest." That $125,000 as well as the millions of other dollars the council gives away to events has to come back to the city.

Talk about nickel and diming like the parking meters, which costs bigger losses from tax revenue: do you idiots and your mascot dogg the fool know how much the music industry (like the film industry) brings into town in related business of everything from hotels to places to eat to limo and clothing rentals to fans' expenses? Do you know how much many cities would LOVE to have these awards shows and are trying to get them? This cost is a small fraction of what the record co's, studios, publicits, etc. spend and generate for the city.

We've lost some big productions like Ugly Betty and more, sure, let's listen to a bunch of clueless morons and a homeless mutt and the weird ladies in Van Nuys, and kill the city's core "glamour industries" which generate so much collateral tourism and dollars.

HOWEVER I'm all for reducing money for every little festival, and the city's already proposed limiting each district to a certain amt. EXCEPT for big city-wide events like this: that was long overdue since certain members abused waivers, while others used them rarely.

12:58pm Sure looks like the city staffers from Perry's office and others are now posting spin on this blog. Gee, to think they kept saying no one pays attention to it. Give me a f--kng break. City council wastes almost $15 MILLION DOLLARS on this crap. If it brings in tourism then why is the Convention Center losing business? Because of the low life Mayor and the fact the papers are reporting what a lazy clown he is.

1. Walter Moore - Annoying Schleprock voice
2. Zuma Dogg - full range from baritone to falsetto; Whitney Houston to Pink Floyd

1. Walter Moore - Arrogant son of a bitch who won't help anyone
2. Zuma Dogg - guy with problems of his own but will drop what he's doing to support someone down on their luck

1. Walter Moore - spin and sound bite camapigner
2. Zuma Dogg - voracious reader and listener; knows where all bodies are buried at City Hall

1. Walter Moore - asshole

To call yourself a "champion" is a joke. You have to actually win something. Any village idiot can rant and rave at a microphone, but sticking with a cause other than yourself and seeing that cause through to its conclusion can make you a champion.

This fee waiver isn't about whether or not the show and tourism itself depends upon it.

Find out how much the event costs, and what it would cost them to move it somewhere else, and the figure will dwarf the amount of the fee waiver.

The event organizers know that it's fee money. Because the City doesn't have a policy on fee waivers, there is no way Jan Perry can say no to them. Everyone else gets a waiver for their events.

It's free money and who's going to turn that down?

Having a policy would also be doing Jan Perry a favor because she'd have a reason for saying no.

The truth is that Grammys are going nowhere. They have a theatre now.

If ANYTHING the Grammy Organization should have the civitas to say "Hey Los Angeles - you've been great to the music business for decades and we know you're hurting so we'll step up. We don't need the fee waiver; we'll pay our share."

Actually no one ever said that about our pro football teams. The fact is that it's easy for pro football teams to pick up their operation and take it somewhere else.

Remember when the Balitmore Colts left in the middle of the night for Indianapolis?

It's not the same for entertainment industry awards shows because all the support business are here, as are the celebrities.

It's wrong to have a knee-jerk reaction that events like these need the taxpayers' money. If you knew the budget of these events, the fee waiver amount is pennies.

It's easy for you to just give away the taxpayers' money like this. Instead, you should think of this money as being your own. Before you spent it, you'd look into what you were spending and what you were getting in return for it.

For the record, to the person who thinks I have been posting anonymously here. YOU ARE 100% WRONG. THIS IS THE FIRST POST I AM MAKING ON THIS THREAD, ANONYMOUS OR OTHERWISE.

Thanks to the support comments!!!

And to this coward of a no support loser who said this, "You have to have had some success in life, even a little, to get people to TRUST you."

OF COURSE "YOU" ARE THE ONE WHO HAS MADE THE DETERMINATION AS TO WHETHER I HAVE HAD EVEN A LITTLE SUCCESS IN LIFE, OR NOT.

And to the control freak loser who said, "ZD, please just do your thing at city hall, but don't ruin the city for the next four years. You are going to cost all of us in the end.

WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO MAKE THIS COMMENT? How the fuck do you know, you cowardly loser? Do you have some special magic prediction ball?

The only thing I know for sure, is Walter ain't coming in any higher than third place in March. How can he when Villar and ZD will be CLEARLY the top two vote getters? That doesn't mean I am saying I will win in March, But I am CERTAINLY saying I will top Walter SUBSTANTIALLY. I really for sorry for his few straggling leftover wack-pack supporter or two who are still mad that Zuma Dogg killed Walter's chances. But that's cause Walter is a weak candidate to begin with. If your entire campaing is crushed because Zuma Dogg is in the race, then you are not as strong of a candidate as Zuma Dogg. Do you think I give a shit about Walter Moore in the election?

In a way I do! I need him to pull enough votes himself to help force a run off. I wish he would keep his mouth shut and not post anonymously. He's losing so much support, so fast, he won't pull enough of his share to force a run-off.

WALTER...PLEASE DO A BETTER JOB CAMPAIGNING SO WE CAN HELP FORCE A RUN-OFF. (That means SHUT UP AND DON'T OPEN YOUR MOUTH, WALTER. Every time you do, you lose more support.

A vote for Walter Moore is a wasted vote at this point.

HELLLOOO PEOPLE THE TOPIC IS FEE WAIVERS.

To all you haters of Jack Weiss he was the one back in 2003 filed a motion to streamline these out of control event waivers. Guess what? That motion has been sitting in the BUDGET & FINANCE committee all these years. Bitter Bernie and his cohorts don't want to push to the full council floor. These event waivers should be for non profits but now are politcal paybacks to corporations. Example, Fiesta on Broadway cost $100,000 fees waived. Huizar allows many of the vendors at this event on Broadway who make MILLIONS to get a free pass on our dime. I'm sure you all know why.

Not in the interest of honest and transparency, but YES, I DO think I should take off the mask. AND I DID. On ABC News Nightline (this Wed) I did the interview segment sans mask...AND, on the three minute TV promo that City TV 35 will be running (all the candidates get a three minute spot) -- again, without the hat and glasses.

BUT EXCUSE ME TO THIS LOSER WHO MAY THINK HE'S A TOUGH GUY...BUT HIS EMOTIONS ARE NOT TOUGH...THIS COWARD WOULD NOT SAY THIS TO ME IN PERSON, NO MATTER HOW TOUGH THEY ARE, CAUSE THAT IS HOW COWARDS BEHAVE:

"You shouldn't turn around and demand that others get out of it."

PLEASE POST WHERE I DEMANDED (OR EVEN SUGGESTED) THAT OTHERS GET OUT OF THE RACE.

To the people reading...it's called agendized-propoganda. Something you need to resort to when you are a weak minded, emotionally weak, coward of a sell out who will take the side of wherever the money is coming from.

NO WONDER YOU ARE SO FRUSTRATED BY ZD! I would like to see any of these pussies say any of this stuff to my face. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW BIG YOU ARE...YOU ARE COWARDS INSIDE, WHO CANNOT AND DO NOT STAND UP...You are victims of your own fears.

YOU KISS MY ASS AND SUCK UP TO ME...BUT YOU DON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY ANY OF THIS TO MY FACE...NO MATTER HOW TOUGH YOU ARE PHYSICALLY, YOU EMOTIONAL COWARDS.

It was front page LAT and other papers OVER and over -- FOREVER. Forever, that is, until they DID leave.

This owner or that owner was always pissing and moaning about the City not being willing to build or improve a stadium, just for them.

Plus awards shows like the Grammies don't even have to move that far away to TAKE the net income benefits out of L.A. to somewhere where everyone could and would go -- Vegas, even OC!

You don't know what you're talking about! Stick to making fun of Zuma Dogg like the rest of the batch here.
