Obama's LA Appointments?

Since the Irish Sweepstakes as well as Joe B and Karl Rove have all declared that Barack Obama has already won the Presidency it might be time to talk about what local pols, if any, could find a place in the Obama Administration.

Loyalty usually has something to do with it and Council President Eric Garcetti and City Controller Laura Chick were early adopters of Barack Obama, while Mayor Villaraigosa cast his bets with Hillary Clinton.

Some chatter we've heard, as mentioned before here on the blog, is that Garcetti is on a short list for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in an Obama Administration. Certainly Garcetti's longtime role as Council President and experience handling housing issues in one of the most challenged areas in the nation qualify him for such a position. Garcetti, who has designs on national office, is young and multi-racial like Obama and could be a real star of his administration.

Chick on the other hand - given her penchant for audits and chasing down budget-busters in City government - she could be a natural to be Obama's Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Sensitive to Republican charges that Obama plans massive spending increases and deficit raising initiatives Obama might be wise to put in the populist sounding Chick who has managed to make audits sexy but would still be in line with Obama's liberal policies.

But when it comes to Villaraigosa, looks like there's no role for him in Washington which is really too bad for LA.

screw you, antonio!

you will be the only one left behind because you're an idiot and chose the wrong candidate!

Is Garcetti multi-racial? His mom being Jewish is not a race, but a religion. Anyone can be Jewish, so since you can't change your race.

I thought Gil Garcetti was Italian. Are you saying he's Latino? Does white/Latino actually constitute multi-race?

Don't tell me that Gil Garcetti is black now. Has anyone noticed how Eric is always evasive about this?

What qualifies eric to be HUD secretary?

The housing deal in los angeles sucks. If he presided over this suckiness, isn't that a strike against him?

Zuma Dogg for HUD Secretary, since he predicted the housing crisis long before anyone else, especially eric, did. That's gutsy!

What did VillaBaboso say "we clean your toilets"?

Michael, just because there is no role for Antonio in Washington doesn't mean he won't BE in Washington (or New York, or Chicago, or Miami, or China...)

Admit it, if you knew the best way to get Antonio out of our City was to elect him Mayor you would have supported him a long time ago! :)

Villar is the kiss of death!

Not only that..haven't you noticed that Obama doesn't have any cholos around him. Bill Richardson was salivating and kissing Obama's black ass to get the V.P. nod, but Obama kissed him off!

Secondly, Obama does NOT want any Hillary butt kissers around him!

Maybe Villar can convert to Islam...he's done just about everything else!

That reminds me...does Villar go to Mass on Sundays???? We never see photos of him praying in Church...just wondering!

If you think Garcetti and Chick could withstand vetting for a White House appointment, you either don't know them very well, or you have no idea of it's depth.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen (removes hat and bows low with flourish):

We, if you will, were among the first to mention the possibility of His Has Been Nibbs becoming Mrs. Clinton's HUD appointee and you sots were quick to pick up on it, savvy?

But we also have heard in the Catorce Quarter rumours of another sort, courtesy of me Mum, and that is that Mister Henry will be running for the office of CD1. Perhaps His Has Been Nibbs will want to keep this particular colleague close to the vest? (Whispers) This ought to be interesting seeing His Has Been Nibbs as a field deputy.

(Smiles) There is a reason we call him "His Nibbs". Me Mum says it's from Cassell's Slang Dictionary which defines it as "nibs n. [early 19C] an important, esp. a self-important person...with no means but high pretensions" (Hotten 1859) [From nib] We like to think of it as the name given to the traditional holiday turkey or goose that is plucked, stuffed, trussed and cooked only to be carved up and dispatched with little ceremony on fine china plates. (Whispers) Perhaps that of a turkey is a most fitting role for His Has Been Nibbs, savvy?

There is no short list for HUD secretary or any of these positions yet. The Clinton people have prepared a transition plan for him that involves the process through which people and found, resumes collected, and appointments made. Some names are being collected and people approached about the possibility.

Chick would never work as OMB head. The reason is that what's needed is not a bunch of audits that go nowhere, as is the case here in L.A., but the ability to get things done.

That involves an intimate knowledge of Washington and the people in it.

Al Gore put a lot of work into his Reinventing Government effort as VP. Still, he couldn't get the big ticket changes implemented because of the resistence from the departments and unions. And he knew Washington better than Chick.

Regarding AV, would you rather have him in Washington or as Mayor for another 4 years? If I didn't like AV, I'd start a drive to get Obama to take him away from here.

10:17- Ok, you win. Eric is not multi-racial, but how about multi-ethnic? Italian and Mexican among them, and don't forget about having a "partner."

But, really, if you consider the way that they have run Los Angeles, why would Obama bother with dead weight?

What's the deal with a city spending hours on debating resolutions that don't have any legal effect at all, like they did last week. Meanwhile the rest of city business gets put on the back-burner.

Even Jack Weiss, with his race getting to the fish-or-cut-bait time, continues to keep the Jamiel's Law as low a priority as possible. Now, he's a complete fool as far as reading the "How To Look Like A Responsive Politician" manual. You will find no D.C. plane reservations in his future. But even his blunders are all but completely camouflaged by the numerous poor choices of actions of others of his council colleagues.

Obama has done fine keeping Tony out of the game and on the bench, or more accurately, in the stands as a seat warmer. Why take any risk now with him? Tony can't even stay in L.A. doing own his job, why would Obama need Tony as any appointee to foul up things for him?

I would tell Obama to skip L.A. officials for his own sake.

He must have found that book in the library while getting free internet for his idiotic blog.

Stinky then goes to city council in a highly transparent effort to show that he's supposedly literate.

He drops demming's name into every comment as though anyone knows what the hell stinkie is talking about.

Hoodie hoo, though is right, yea, yea! I'd love to see him have an ongoing role in city hall in whatever form, even his current form. zd is a riot!

Becerra is the only Latino politicans that isn't afraid to say it like it is with the illegals. I've heard him at meetings and love the way he tells the illegals to start obeying the law, learn to speak English and know that ICE will be coming to LA often. Good for Xavier. Notice he doesn't hang out with the loser Latino politicans like gang banger Mayor, Alarcon, Reyes, Huizar, Cardenas all the no class, uneducated, small potatoe morons who say they're council men. Their moms would be ashamed of all of them the way their weak asses behave.

Kevin Roderick just lost what little cred he had left as a re-poster of other people's news by his reference to the dogg, which of course the dogg plays up as a whole thread here and apparently on his own blog.
"Two of LA's most important bloggers meet and talk" indeed.

When a twig ties a boulder to itself, they both sink, Kevin. (That's the sound of your own dead weight sinking, Kevin.)

Everyone said Saddam Hussein was charming in his own way, and so's Ahmadenijad -- just insane and sociopathic. Being charming and pretending to gain their own fame for "the people" is a hallmark of sociopaths, by the way. How else could they connive their way?

There may be fools on the Council and Legislature, and I could certainly do without at least half of them, but at least they got elected, not self-appointed like all sociopathic egomaniacs.

October 20, 2008 4:04 PM, If you question my Deming training (yes, it's beyond read any one book or books) -- simply assemble any panel of experts and have them vet my understanding of the 14 Points. Take my article and show it to whomever you'd like. Deming himself sent me a letter of praise of my "Interpreting Deming's 14 Point." People thought the letter was a fraud because he didn't send out letters of praise to people...usually just scornful criticism on how someone got it wrong.

5:30pm, you are truly sick and emotionally ill. First of all, I never said, "Two of LA's most important bloggers meet and talk" - so you got a quote wrong, (and you DID use quotes and you simply got it wrong.)

And who are you comparing to those dictators? Bro, get help. You're off the deep end in anger.

You are getting all angry because Kevin called me a, "nice guy," and from there you make a jump to, "sociopath dictator.

So Zuma moron, if you say someone got a quote wrong about you, you're supposed to correct it not just deny it. But you didn't because what you actually say is worse and more egotistically bizarre.

You call yourself and Roderick "the two LA power bloggers." The two. (Much as I hated having to actually check that blog for the source -- Zuma's ploy to get at least one hit, I guess.)

Kevin, you deserve to open yourself up to that company, you asked for it.

Regarding my Deming training:

1) Read an article in a local newspaper about Deming, who had one of his "four day seminars" coming to the area via satellite.

I liked what I read about him, and it summed up ALL the problems I was experiencing as a radio executive working for one dysfunctional radio station after another.

2) I signed up and attended the four-day seminar, with about 500 people in the room.

There were facilitators/Top Deming consultants that ZD had access to. (It's really, really hard to understand what Deming is talking about (kinda like "legalese") so it's up to the facilitators to explain.

Before the seminar, I DID read a book called, "Deming, The American Who Taught The Japanese About Quality" by Rafael. Aguyo (check spelling) --- AND IT'S A MUCH EASIER/MORE PRACTICAL BOOK TO READ than Deming's own, "Out of the Crisis" that I have used as a reference manual, as well.

The BIG thing that helped, too, was after the seminar, the seminar sponsor (Jim McInvale of a big furniture company in the city I was living in/Houston), hired Deming's top instructor/heir to the Deming thrown (K. Yoshida) to stay in town and give classes for his staff, and opened it up for the public (free).

Of course, there was ONE person in Houston who showed up for the free Deming instruction from his top instructor...ZD!

AND THAT WAS INVALUABLE. AND, like I do with my City Hall stuff...I would follow up with Yoshida on certain things I was having trouble understanding. And the whole thing was very enlightening.

THEN, when I was trying to get a job in NYC at a radio station, my future boss asked me to type up what I learned at the seminar.

That turned out to be "Interpreting Deming's 14 Points."

I sent a copy of the article to Deming, before I sent it out, because it was so complex, I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting a bunch of stuff wrong.

So I expected a return fax with a bunch of red ink (corrections).

Deming DID fax me back saying it was "well done" and that he appreciated it.

I was stoked...but didn't realize the magnitude of the supportive letter, until everyone told me how rare a letter like that was. And some folks had me fax it, for them to confirm.

I ended up getting the job at the NYC radio station, too.

And ended up getting to use the Deming stuff throughout my day on the job.

So to sum it up: Read some books, attended his four-day seminar, was tutored by his top instructor AT the seminar, and I followed up on my own with college style classes held by K. Yoshida while living in Houston.

PLUS, the hours of videos on Deming and videos of his seminar. (See: Quality or Else by Bill Moyer...A GREAT video series. Or get the transcript.)

And, according to Deming, I have a knack for it.

Read the article, that's all that matters anyway.
