Meruelo Maddox $50,000,000 pay day courtesey of Villar's LAUSD School Board
This post may be toxic for the tax payers.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has agreed to pay $50 million to settle an eminent domain dispute with Meruelo Maddux Properties over a 23-acre Cypress Park site, Los Angeles Downtown News has learned.
The agreement involving the property known as Taylor Yard comes about four years after the district sought to buy the land for $27 million, only to be eclipsed by a higher offer from Meruelo Maddux. The previously unreported agreement was approved in a closed session meeting of the board of education by a 6 to 1 vote on June 17.
That came more than two years after the district initiated eminent domain proceedings to acquire the property. A judge ruled in November 2007 that the district could take the land by eminent domain, but attorneys have since been debating what constitutes fair market value.
The $50 million settlement does not sit well with some, including Tamar Galatzan, the only member of the board of education to vote against the agreement.
"This is a lot of money for a property that the district could have purchased years ago and the run-up in price is based on the developer speculating that if the district didn't buy it, he could put a huge development on it and make double his investment," she said.
Richard Meruelo, the company's chief executive officer - and a prominent Downtown landowner with close ties to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa - has long countered that the district wavered for too long and he stepped in when the seller got anxious.
"LAUSD staff walked away from the property only to become interested again after a frustrated seller put it back on the market and re-approached the entities that had provided purchase offers nearly a year prior," the company said in a statement to Downtown News last week.
One needs to launch a corruption probe into this sweetheart deal for Meruelo. Further, for months 55 gallon drums were stored on this site, exposed to the elements. What was inside those drums? That question needs answering.

And on top of this waste, this site is for a giant school -- the very kind LAUSD wants to replace with small charter-like ones, and why they claim they "need" all the bond money.
That is something else Tamar's been opposing Garcia and Yolanda Flores on == saying the district should first prove it can get better results from smaller schools before spending all the money. They have not shown that, since charters work because they're free from LAUSD and have different teaching models.

Boulevard Sentinel knew. Zuma knew. People of the community knew.
Maddox was told by Villar to "get us some good money"
Now we all know about it.

Credit to Galatzan for voting against this scam but I suspect she had other reasons for opposing it.
It's a good angle for running for City Council in CD2 should Wendy Greuel beat Ron Kaye for Controller.
"Tamar Galtzan: Stood up to the Mayor, LAUSD and the downtown developers to save your tax money."

Ron Kaye for Controller? And beating Wendy, no less? Higby, the insular world of the angry clueless collecting around RonKaye or Doug McIntyre aren't even on the radar of the movers and shakers in the city.

What's in the 55 gallon drums? Red Spot and Higby's lost integrity, no doubt!

I thought we had declining school enrollment? Why do we need to build this at all?
Galatzan is a Villar puppet. It's all just part of the show. Remember who her master is.

Her master is VICA, as in "industry" and "commerce". Remember that, all you Sunland-Tujunga residents. Go look up VICA's record on every single project or development that you've ever opposed, all of you in the northeast valley.
VICA has a policy to approve everything and anything no matter how bad it is. If they have a feeling that there will be a two dollar profit, they are pro. If the residents are anti, they are pro. If the residents are pro, VICA is anti. They get off on having that reputation. They're a sad bunch of losers though with the (former) president being that square-headed, block head of a husband of Tamar.
Vote for anyone but Tamar.
Hmm, why did Tamar vote against the other school board members this week? Please. She's not even nice. She is a very good reason to get out the vote. The Anti-Tamar vote.
