The City of Los Angeles Raid Community Park!
It's true! But let me first congratulate Walter Moore for a very successful, "Hour of Power", event he organized on Saturday. We thank everyone who helped too! I was going to write about the people we met, but I'll have to save it for another time. I was also going to tell you about the 4 1/2 hours I spent at City Hall last Friday. I'll have to save that also.
Sunday, August 17th, the Los Angeles Police Department (Southwest Division), Sanitation Department, Parking Enforcement, General Services, the Health Department, Motorcycle Officers and a Helicopter, raided Leimert Park located on the corner of 43rd Place and Crenshaw Blvd. Leimert Park is a well-known park in the black community.
Every Sunday, The Shaw Family and supporters of Jamiel's Law, come to Leimert Park from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., to get signatures to put Jamiel's Law on the March 3, 2009 ballot. We have our Jamiel's Law T-shirts on and we have Jamiel's Law petitions. We started doing this June 29th and we have been there every Sunday.
We usually barbecue and give away free hot dogs, chips and sodas, as a way of saying, "Thank You", to the people supporting us. But today, the family had a party for Thomas (the younger brother of murdered victim, Jamiel Shaw, II), at a different location, so we just had drinks and chips for the kids.
Suddenly, the park was surrounded with Los Angeles Police Officers. Some in plain clothes and some in uniform. Atleast 7 or 8 black and white cars and a couple of police vans, if not more. They started with our family. Asking for identification and asking for our social security numbers. We showed our identification, but we refused to give our social security numbers to the Police Officer. The officer was not happy with this and said, "You know, I could give you a ticket for blocking the sidewalk".
We did have a table up against a fence, with plenty of room to walk. We told the officers, "We're here to get signatures to put Jamiel's Law on the March 3, 2009 ballot. We'll move our table to the inside of the fence". He said we couldn't do that. His words were, "you can't get signatures in a public park". So we said, "we'll talk to people as they walk by". According to the same officer, "You can only get signatures going door to door"!
One of the officers refused to give us his business card. However, another officer did hand us his card and he told us, "Many officers do support what you all are doing, but this is very political. 'They', are trying to shut you guys down. I hope you get the signatures you need". A third officer told us this raid was planned a week ago. He said, "We're just following orders, it's not us".
Then the Health Department walks up and tells us that we cannot give away water, soda and chips without a permit. We had about 4, 6 packs of water and sodas and small bags of chips. They told us, "load it up". Then the trash truck shows up ready to haul everything away. If that wasn't enough, the helicopter comes and hovers over the area. You would think we were criminals.
In addition to all of this, the City will not open the restrooms in the public park. It's true! They lock us out. We're forced to leave the park and go use the restrooms at one of the fast food restaurants. We have to fight and complain just to get the City to open the restrooms and we're still being ignored. Yet the City Council members bend over backwards to approve a restroom facility for day laborers at Home Depot.
We're shocked by all of this! The first time they raided the park I wasn't able to get pictures. I forgot the camera at home and forgot that I have a camera on my cell phone. Although I was able to get pictures after all, because did I mention two hours later they raided the park again?!
I wonder how much did all of this cost the City of Angels?

Shame on whoever authorized and instituted this attack on Constitutional rights. Remember the First Amendment? Peaceable assembly? Freedom of speech? Petitioning the government for redress?
This makes it official that L.A. is a Third World county. Sending police to harass political opponents is a move you'd expect from a dictator, not an American city hall.

Maybe Councilmember Parks can take some of the million dollars in his Notorious B.I.G. hush-money and buy the community some water and hot dogs himself, since the police wouldn't let you have your BBQ.
Or maybe there wouldn't be such a crime problem in the area if Councilmember Parks allowed people living in his district to get some of those contracting/construction jobs in his district, instead of having Mike Hernandez figure out ways to filter his own constituents out of the project in favor of non-documented workers from outside the district.
And if you think this raid was expensive, you should see how much outside counsel is costing the city to defend Bernard Parks (who is running for Board of County Stupidvisors) over his role regarding the Notrious B.I.G.

AND REMEMBER, if you are a restaurant owner, do not put any water on the table for customers at the same time you are demanding people to try and be more healthy when they dine in restaurants and nothing is healthier or better for you than a glass of water. SO YOU BETTER BAN THAT!

There's an interesting comment here, if it turns out to be accurate one and not the officer's guess, is that the action "was planned a week ago."
The execution of that plan would fit nicely with the start of the City Council's "summer break." Coincidence?
This means the Council won't have to be confronted publicly about it in Council Chambers until they have ample time to coordinate their stories. Good planning on their part?
The other thought to consider is what all this expenditure of resources was about?
Is it that there are not enough other things important enough to keep police busy on Sundays that they had to collect the assorted city services and personnel for this. POOR planning on their part?
Another fiscal concern: Do any of the responders here have an overtime differential running for Sunday work? That would be an even more expensive outing for the city.
Sounds like the work done in planning for something that COULD HAVE been handled with some good advance community relations if the city side gave it any thought.
Presumably, some planners had the capacity to anticipate the "violations", so why not anticipate the "solutions" that could avoid this cost to the city in so much man/woman power and money? Or was this just for "show"? (Not a good plan.)
Did anyone remember that the "Jamiel's Law" actions are coming from the side SUPPORTING law enforcement? (There probably is a traceable history for all this in city documents and recordings to get to the bottom of it.)

Go to the LAPD African-American Forum tonight hosted by LAPD. This is a forum to speak out on issues. You can't blame LAPD for following orders. No doubt this crap came from the top and sounds like an Antonio weak move. State the many weekends you have been at the park and ask why did this happen now? My suggestion is not to go there yelling and screaming and behaving crazy as I have seen others do. You are a great group of intelligent community members that can speak and get your point across. All you want is answers.

let me make it known that on Friday there was an 'organized' task force waiting at Van Nuys for Matt Dowd.
Instead of the regular two officers, one at the door, and one in the chambers, there were 4 extra officers at the door to chambers, who confronted, and restricted me from entering with a folded cardboard item under my arm. I called for a supervisor and he appeared within 90 seconds, so obviously he was already waiting too.
Apparently 'someone' from City Council heard me threaten to disrupt Van Nuys on Friday, when I was removed on Wednesday downtown for booing Ed Reyes. [a complete lie, under investigation]so these five police were sent to van nuys based on a complaint about me on Wednesday (probably Eric).
Now if you want to talk about cops and trash fees, theres five officers tagging along behind Matt Dowd.
So I completely subscribe to the theory that the City 'plans' these counter democracy efforts like the one in Leimert Park, and the denial of my public comment at Van Nuys.
I'm just testifying to my most recent experience.

He can help you decide where to target Public Records Act requests to uncover documents related to this organized effort.
The councilmember for the area needs to be held accountable for whatever his involvement was, and the mayor too because he is the head of all the departments.
If all anyone is going to do is complain, the issue will die quickly. If records are uncovered, and lawsuits filed, the issue will have more legs.
Check with Richard Close (Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn) and Joe Vitti (Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council) regarding the legal action they won against the city when they were kicked off the Van Nuys Airport property while trying to collect signatures for the secession petition. Public places are public.
Ask your councilman and mayor to show you where it says that petitions can't be circulated in public parks.
I'm GLAD the City shut you down and asked YOU for YOUR social security cards. You WERE breaking laws and public ordinances- so the police have a right to shut you down and even confiscate foods you are distributing. THIS is exactly what your "Jamiel's Law" would do: TARGET a group or ethnic group and take away any or all liberties. 11:01's first part is too true: If Walter Moore and the Shaws want cops to only target those who look Latino to demand their documents, they'll have to get used to it happening to all of us since the cops and city won't stand for profiling. Just like the airports, it will be one procedure for all, black and brown, babies and old people -- NOT the way to solve illegal gang crime, by taking away all our civil liberties and turning cops into the Gestapo. Walter Moore's "law" will never take effect for this reason, and thank goodness.
But I don't agree with the poster's second half, that this is a Mexican city and all that. It is our "anglo" culture, our legal system based on ENGLISH LAW, that gives us these constitutional rights that separate us from Mexico, China and other countries where might makes right. The illegal gang problem has taken a big step forward, with Supervisors "letting" Baca check criminals' status just this week and giving him more staff. Cooley needs pressure to stop plea-bargaining gangbangers back onto the streets and not working to ID illegals. The LAPD is working with ICE more actively, and you can pressure Bratton to encourage his cops to do so more fully -- as allowed under SO40. All the depts. and legislative bodies are feeling the public pressure.
But by following that idiot Walter Moore and Doug McIntire off the cliff, the movement has crippled itself. And that's too bad for all of us who want to get illegal and all gangbangers off our streets.

The 11:01 a.m. post sounds much like the Don Quixote style, but at least DQ tried to link SOME bit of logical and appropriate facts to the analysis. He still had bad outcomes, but there were some glimmers of reason present usually.
First, no one here was ever considered to be present in the country UNLAWFULLY and subject to deportation IF the laws were enforced.
EVEN illegal aliens do not have to present any I.D. to the extent a police officer did when obtaining city services.
With Jamiel's Law, the focus is upon persons already defined as "gang members" under existing laws AND who are in the country illegally.
The community park raid was done without any apparent reason other than to interrupt the peaceful presence in a public park due to the specific political nature of what the group sought.
Using the city services to intimidate these actions is suspect. On the face of it, it's harassment, selectively directed to this group to chase them out of a public place.

If the City wanted to impose fines on a justifiable basis for real "revenue generating" that the Council hotly pursues in other areas, it COULD do that and not even have to rely on semantics or any tortured definitions to do so.
But that would mean that the Council would upset some and might even lose potential votes, wouldn't it?
Well, Sunday's actions will be doing that quite directly.
Clearly, SOMEBODY had no problem deciding to deploy all these persons and property while routinely ignoring the attendant costs and propriety completely.

How much did it cost?
How did so many different agencies get involved?
What is going to be done about this!

What is new in L.A? To serve and protect, isn't that what is says on the police cars? Look on the bright side, when L.A. becomes part of what the mayor really wants you should be able to bribe the police like they do south of the border. 11:01, the law in itself isn't an attack on any ethnic group, and it will be up to the police officer's discretion whether or not to detain someone because he she looks to be of a certain race or ethnicity. Let's look at the response by the city to one family (the Shaw's) "illegally" handing out bottled water and chips in a city park. Do you really think a police helicopter, multiple cop cars, a garbage truck and road closures were necessary and justifiable for water and chips?

If this type of raid happened to the hundreds of illegal vendors around McArthur Park this story would already be on the news and the Mayor would be rushing back to Los Angeles to protect the "victims" of the big bad LAPD.

Sp.Order 40, 1979 vintage, a different situation for a different time. The illegal alien issue was a more manageable and tolerable condition. Amnesty came in 1986 to "fix" the situation, and you know the rest of the story.
Numbers, problems and proportions have changed on a huge scale.
S/O 40 accommodates crime reporting in theory, under 1979 conditions. It's the retaliation from the criminals now that is feared and keeps lots of people from giving much information.
Police can't protect everyone even if they wanted to; they even suffer violent crime themselves and they are trained and armed.
Why should we continue to allow this risk and reality when there is no right to that group's presence here to spread crime and harm to everyone of every color? It's not like those are Eagle Scouts being removed.
Loss of life is never an acceptable condition. Don't be a kool-aid drinker.
I strongly oppose SO40 because it's unconstitutional and would erode all our rights, period. Everyone would have their legal status checked as part of any routine questioning, like the Gestapo in Nazi Germany or the KGB in Russia, or what's going on today in China -- how else to tell who's here legally, and who's already in a gang?

They fear that more than they do the cops. Rocky's been totally absent on the gang issue until just a few months ago, looking out for his legacy or to salvage what's left of a future.
But everyone agrees with the facts he cites, that in the last 5 years, MS-13 and 18th St. are run by illegals from Central America, recruit other illegals, and only in the last 5 years have become so huge in Mexico and Central America that they control crime from there. Since Rocky and the Mayor aren't exactly close buddies, he's hardly saying that to let the Mayor or Police Chief "off the hook."
When illegal gangbangers deported after serving prison time, except in El Salvador, their countries let them roam freely to use their prison "training" against us even more.
So deportation without ICE's creating and sharing a national database with all law enforcement around the country, only fuels the fire. Plus we must force Mexico and Central America to deal with their deported gangmembers -- they can't keep claiming "America made them that way." They shouldn't have come here illegally in the first place, so now it's everyone's crisis.

The Shaws will be gathering Jamiel's Law petition signatures. The Shaws have asked that "WE ALL GATHER TOGETHER UNITED!!" This crosses party lines. No racial divides. EVERYONE is encouraged to attend.
Please Bring American flags and signs! Signs should support Jamiel's Law.
*Also we will respect LAPD. It is not the officers that created the order! Like one officer stated many support the Shaws! However if you want to bring signs exposing LA City or Chief Bratton corruption, by all means!!
There is a parking lot and street parking in the village.
And I remind all of you that there is safety in numbers!!
The petition gathering event will end at 5pm. I encourage everyone to at least rally from 11am - 1pm.
If you can only attend one rally this year...let this be the one! Why? This was not just a violation of the Shaw's rights, but a violation for ALL Americans!!! This proves that there is definite corruption in Los Angeles politics and we Americans MUST fight and expose the corruption!!
News flash for Attorney Weiss and Police Chief Bratton: Politically motivated selective enforcement of city regulations against citizens depending upon their political views = Equal Protection violation. No joke guys. The Federal Constitution, check it out. Oh, and Mayor Villaraigosa, they may not have covered this at the People's Law School, but the 1st Amendment makes for fascinating reading. Try skimming through it when you get the chance.
Are any of you outraged folks actually going to get out there and help collect signatures now? Ya know, we only have until late October to do this.
If you want to make City Clowcil pay for this "raid," there's no better way then getting Jamiel's Law on the ballot.

I see a golden platter civil rights lawsuit & criminal conspiracy prosecution.
The feds just gave a 19 year old kid 4 months for driving past protesters with nuses hanging from his truck for intimidation, a fleets of police checking IDs arresting persons without probable cause, sanitation trucks, general service police, helicopters to harass petition gatherers seems like a cut n dried case.
A slam dunk.
A multi-pronged city, police, sanitation intimidation of federally protected petition gathering on public property sounds like a much stronger case which even a mediocre lawyer could expand into to a RICO case against several city officials.

You don't, any public place is fair game, even "Private malls".

Collecting petition signatures is also a federally protected activity, and I find a panoply of police, helicopters, general service police intimidating, telling you to leave, threatening arrest, checking ID far more intimidating than rednecks driving by with nooses hanging from their truck.
This is state fascism and voter intimidation, the kind our constitution was supposed to protect us from.
Where are all the trial lawyers?
What about the people who collect signatures at Ralphs, are they breaking the law? What about the people who collect money wearing the white nurses clothing at the airport? How about the people who sell tamales and other Mexican food off carts? I've been seeing a lot of fruit peddlers on street corners, and flower sellers on street medians. There's always a garbage sale/flea market on a city sidewalk in Echo Park. I guess these people are all well within the law.
If only the Shaw family put this type of effort into keeping Jamiel aka 2Wild from being a wannbe banger he might still be alive. It is a tragedy all around. One thing is for sure they can not except the truth. Blame the mexicans all you want.

Anonymous at 11:01: No where in Jamiel's Law does it make any reference to race. It states "illegal aliens". There are black, oriental, white, and hispanic illegal aliens in the United States and it refers to all of them. You have shown your ignorance and your inhumanity with your comments. The Shaws are Black, like most Blacks they grew up with racial profiling' where have you been? Even though Hispanics have taken over the term and so many other benefits that were fought for during the civil rights moverment, it first came about in regards to Blacks. As for the Shaws not mentioning the young man from your race killed by a Black person, they are out there with one purpose and that is to get Jamiel's Law passed. Just think, if the illegal gang members are removed LAPD could better deal with our own home grown gang members and not have to keep saying they need more officers. They are not out there doing news broadcasts about all of the homicides in this city. People can get that from LA Homicide blog. My guess is that you hate all Blacks and think that Whites stole California and you are pissed off. Get over it, all of that hate and negative energy will turn on you.
