Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Monday

Same-sex marriage begins in California on Tuesday. However gays and lesbians who marry will not have the same rights as heterosexual married couples, particularly with respect to Federal matters such as taxes or Social Security and may have issues if they own property in other states and have children. An article in the Daily News breaks this down and offers advice for additional steps and documentation that gay couples will have to consider to avoid problems later.

Former Neighborhood Council leader Jim Alger takes on Walter Moore at CityWatch in a screed against the free market and the right of people who work hard to increase their income the opportunity to buy the vehicle they wish. After misspelling Moore's name Alger senses a global conspiracy amongst the oil companies who wish nothing more than to poison children and increase global warming.

Los Angeles firefighters are up in arms over a new policy issued by the Department. Firefighters who have tattoos must either cover them up with clothing or bandages. Does this policy apply to the Mayor too? I can understand that Fire Department brass may be nervous that some folks could get the impression that firefighters with tats are gangbangers. But the truth is that many LAFD members are former military officers where it's common to get tattoos. The Department's policy is unrealistic and a slap to the men and women who give their lives everyday and are increasingly getting little for it.

A website is beginning to start polling support for announced and potential candidates for Mayor of Los Angeles during the 09 campaign. Mayor09.com wants you to email them your choice for Mayor as they begin a series of polls to be issued over the next several months.

Steve Hymon reports that ridership is up on the MTA's Red Line, Gold Line, Purple Line, Blue Line and Orange Line over the last year. Interestingly the Green Line has dropped in ridership. High gas prices are surely spurring at least a few folks to use public transit where they can.

We have a reader who is frequently obsessed with former Assembly Speaker and Mayoral candidate Bob Hertzberg. He seems to think I'm equally obsessed with the hugging former pol. To paraphrase former President Richard Nixon, let me make one thing perfectly clear: I am not supporting Bob Hertzberg for Mayor. Nor is he running - unless Magic or Caruso don't.

Just because you live in a poor neighborhood doesn't mean people have to dump trash on your streets. But it's happening in low income communities in Los Angeles and apparently the City doesn't have the resources to help these people creating an ever increasing cycle of despair and opportunity for more crime.

If anyone thought that in the wake of Hillary Clinton's departure from the race that women voters would not switch to Barack Obama they were wrong. The LA Times says that females are "lining up to vote" for the presumptive Democratic nominee. Probably time for McCain to pick Sarah Palin as VP.

Britney Spears may be considered for an Emmy. That's right that is not a misprint. Producers of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother are planning to submit the pop diva for recognition for her two guest starring spots on the show.

Alger's screed is bizarre insofar as he directs it against me. I wrote a brief essay pointing out that not only is the price of foreign oil up, but also the price of all foreign products because the dollar is down against other currencies. Thankfully, the price of Euros has not sky rocketed as much as the price of gas, but still, it's the kind of thing to which we need to pay attention. This should, for example, present an opportunity to attract foreign companies to invest in creating jobs in our city.

Somehow, in Alger's mind, that apparently equates with wanting everyone to drive Hummers. I guess he missed the part of my platform on how to reduce traffic. Whatever.

June 16, 2008 8:11 AM

Blogger Mayor Sam said:

Walter you're right that we need to attract more high paying jobs to LA. One way to reduce traffic is to center jobs around high density residential development. For example, the City and MTA has developed the area around the North Hollywood Metro station. Living in that area I can tell you it is not cheap to rent any of the new apartments. However the jobs brought in (so far) to the development are at Coffee Bean and Panda Express. They will need to get software companies, architecture firms, accounting firms, production companies, etc. to locate in the area so that my neighbors who know drive to Glendale or Hollywood or Santa Monica or Woodland Hills to work can walk or drive just a few minutes to work.

Ending the long ass commutes will make a huge dent in traffic, pollution and gas usage.

Unfortunately our CM - Tom "What High School Did You Go To" LeBong is apparently opposed to high end commercial development in North Hollywood because he wants it all to go to Hollywood.

Alger v. Moore. My god, there hasn't been a more important "strawweight" (< 105 lbs.) bout since 1990, when Ricardo “El Finito” Lopez Nava defeated reigning champion Hideyuki Ohashi to take that title in five rounds.

(Look that up in Wikipedia, it's a real boxing weight class - right below mini-flyweight).

The only real question is - isn't it just a TEENY bit unethical and sleazy along the lines of his accusations of others for someone who says HE'S running for mayor, to draft a poll re: same and not identify that he owns the GD poll? (I bet it is!)

With SUV sales down dramatically, and tradeins on even newer models really low, this is no time to start with more wacky Dem laws like surchages on consumers who buy them. The market's taking care of it.

In fact, people are downsizing so much it's getting extreme. Like with that little Suzuki out for less than $15,000 complete. Cute, but as anyone who's driven those things in Europe knows, there's a real danger factor taking them on the highway, in case of accidents.

In Europe, other than Germany's autobahn and the cross-Europe 10- lane highways like from France to Brussells, people go locally more. That little thing makes sense as a second car for local trips, though.

For anyone out there, or in here, who has ever once been tempted to take Zuma Dogg seriously - about anything (that includes you Higby), may I suggest you rent the movie "Being There" (1979) with Peter Sellers.

I coule suggest reading the Jerzy Kosinski book it's based on, but - well, that would require, um, reading a whole book -- one with few if any pictures, and most certainly no pop-ups.

Anyway, here's the brief synopsis:

"Chance, a simple gardener, has never left the estate until his employer dies. His simple TV-informed utterances are mistaken for profundity."

The main difference in this instance, is that the Peter Sellers character isn't aware that many supposedly intellectual people are taking him seriously.

Zuma, on the other hand, isn't aware that no one really is.

Anyone can and is supposed to call for FREE bulky item pickup, but if it's a frig, washer, something worth scrap metal, someone will probably pick it up before the garbage truck comes.

No one "has" to dump trash on the streets, but they do it because they're pigs. So WE the homeowners who pay for trash pickup, now an absurd $40/ month, are paying trucks to roam the barrios and South L A looking for trash in the streets because people are worse than pigs.

How about Jan Perry, Special Ed Reyes, Parks and Cardenas and AlarCon running an ad campaign "educating" their people not to behave like animals -- instead of blaming the "westside," the "hillside federations," and the "homeowner associations" for not embracing these people to bring their Third World attitudes to their communities. In highly dense low-income, "affordable housing" schemes that line these Entitlement Politicians' pockets.

Higby, here's some reality:

1) Caruso is not running. His ego wants to run, but he is msart enough to know that no one likes his arrogant ass, and he won't spend the fortune he has made by his own hard work and smarts, trying to beat an incumbent Mayor who can still command votes and raise large sums of money from others. Caruso is too smart to get in to lose.

2) Magic won't run, because he has his own skeltons and doesn't want to have them raised, and because being Mayor would be too much work and restrictions on his charmed life. He's loved and respected now, why change that in, for what?

3) Zev won't run because he is a chicken.

4) Hertzberg won't run because he can't raise a penny and because he is making too much money right now to give it up. His wife would kill him. Make that wives.

5) It's not me that is obsessed with Hertzberg, it is you. If you didn't mention his name every time an election comes up, no one else would. He is yesterday's news and there is no tomorrow for him. Unless blowing up on pastrami dips is your idea of a political career.

So, here it is: Villaraigosa will be elected in a landslide in the primary. Zuma Dog will be disqualified for lack of residency.

Anotnio will serve four more eyars, plus what's left of this term.

8:06 (ZD posting anonymously)

Let me break this down for you in small words you "what's wrong with that" simpleton.

Zuma starts a "poll" about people's preferences for an election he says he's running in, but doesn't tell people he's behind it.

Polls, by their very definition, like elections, need to be completely objective, untouched by influences of the candidates. Yeah, yeah, go ahead and tell me some are always fakes, paid for by the candidates themselves (but, guess what - they even have to show that on their ethics filings).

And again, "yeah, yeah" tell me polls aren't elections and they don't have the same expectation of objectivity.

Then why do candidates HAVE to file with Ethics when they finance them? That they're REQUIRED to mention on their campaign literature when quoting these self-financed polls what they're role was in commissioning them?

(And remember through this whole time, that it's ZUMA DOGG who's claiming the others are the backroom-dealing, slimy, lying frauds!)

SO, ZD collects a bunch of "input" under a fake front and then releases it later on through some other source to say "here's who people want to have run for mayor."

Says who? Who collected, who counted, who's had their hands all over the information since day #1.

And, if he's on that list (bet the farm), he makes a lot of noise about it. If he's NOT, he just shelves the results and acts like it never happened.

Would ZD be screaming bloody murder if candidates in one of the neighborhood council elections he's been harping about counted their own ballots? How about if they hand-carried the ballots of their friends and neighbors TO the polls, and dropped them in the box himself. How about if the candidates themselves wrote the PR after the fact explaining who won?

GEEZ, I'll bet if they let convicted criminals carry their own CSI evidence samples to trial and keep them in their cells during the trial, you'd also so "so what?" and "big whoop".

Doofus!

Zuma Dogg is the EXACT same kind of sleazy operator he claims everyone on city council is, only he's a poor sleazy, back-room dealer. Oh, and a DUMB one, because he also didn't realize how F-ing EASY it was to get caught doing something that stupid.

And judging from his "credibility" (zero), I wouldn't be too surprised to find out someday soon the "poor" guy image is a fake front, too - and he lives with his senile parents in some billion-dollar Bel Air mansion (above the garage, of course).

"In the scheme of things, big whoop," you sez (you're right about that). No big deal that the clown screaming the loudest about slimy politicians is just another, amateur slimy politician, his own self!

Don't even bother screaming about other politicians now, ZD, you've just joined the fraternity as the stupid little brother, class clown Bluto of that Animal House.

I ask:

Is it really fair to accuse someone of doing something that you have dreamed up in your superior mind? As far as I can tell, Zuma Dogg did not collect any data, did not manipulate any data and did not release any data to sway the masses to flood the polls in some distant election. So in reality, Zuma Dogg did nothing wrong.

Sure he yells the loudest about "shadiness" in local government. That's his right. But how can you accuse the guy of doing something he hasn't done. That was really my only point to all of this. Is it fair to accuse someone of something they haven't done? If you have real proof that he released some ill-gotten polling data to influence the public let's see it.

Vote in the Mayor09.com poll.

The problem with internet polls at this early stage of the mayoral race is that you have to list a slate of names for people to pick. This creates extremely skewed results. Names are included of people who will not be running and other names may be excluded because they have not announced yet. So for this first poll we will be posting results based on "un-aided recall."

HOW TO VOTE IN THE MAYOR09.COM POLL

Send an email to Vote@Mayor09.com with the name of the person who you would most like to see elected as Mayor of Los Angeles in 2009 out of all the names you have heard bandied around. Just type the name in the "subject" field.

And please feel free to send any additional comments, articles or related material pertaining to the election in the "message" field.

Are you an insider or well known people who would like to vote? Just create an anonymous email account for your email messages and votes on Mayor09.com.

WE WILL POST rolling totals as they come in. Then WE WILL do an aided recall survey based on the top vote getters.

Watch this site for Mayor '09 election and candidate information for Los Angeles, CA.

Wouldn't want to judge too harshly or prejudice your reactions.
