Mayor Villaraigosa in Sacramento seeking some financial "trim"

When last seen, our esteem Mayor was speeding away from the manic homeless activists who upstage his photo-op at Gladys Park in Skid Row.
Today Mayor Villaraigosa stepped off Keith Brackpool's, errr city plane to spend the day in "Cow Town", as described by Laker's coach Phil Jackson.

He will spend the day meeting with the likes of new Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and new Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg. Maybe he will wander by the "Doghouse" that South Gate Assemblyman Hector De La Torre has been relegated to for having the audacity to expouse something called "ETHICS", refering to his refusal to back Nunez's "GOLDEN HANDSHAKES" for departing staffers.

But one dosen't journey to the "financial busom" of California Politics without coming back with something to show for it.

That comes tonight with a fund raiser for his re election campaign. The likes of Nunez will be in attendence so count on ample supplies of fine wine and maybe some after hours "chulitas".
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is in Sacramento today, where he will gather campaign funds for his reelection effort in 2009.
His evening fundraiser is at Ella Dining Room & Bar in downtown Sacramento, with an influential list of hosts, including Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, lobbyists like Soyla Fernandez and Darius Anderson, members of the Tsakopoulos clan and Bob White, the former chief of staff to Gov. Pete Wilson.
The $1,000 per person event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Clear Channel Messed with LA Weekly and Lost!
by Jill Stewart
April 2, 2008 10:22 AM
Recently, reporter Christine Pelisek asked the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety for a list of all legal and illegal billboards in L.A. - an embarrassing document that will show the public all 11,000 "points of blight" allowed on local streets by City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles City Council - in an era when other cities are removing and banning billboards.

Maybe we shouldn't have been so shocked, given Villaraigosa's view of what constitutes quality of life, when Building and Safety officials, instead of giving Pelisek this public information, instead alerted Clear Channel and its lawyers that the Weekly had asked City Hall for its billboards list.

That's right, Villaraigosa's bureaucrats in Building and Safety actually informed on us to a very big, very aggressive, very rich billboard company. Tattled. Squealed.

This morning, Clear Channel took the city to Superior Court to stop the cowed bureaucrats over at Building and Safety from even thinking about giving the Weekly the list of existing illegal and legal billboards in L.A.

Clear Channel lost in court today.

When our lawyer, Walt Sadler, and the city's lawyer, Steve Blau, appeared in court this morning to protest Clear Channel's effort to squelch this information, Judge James Chalfant quickly made clear that the location and ownership of billboards in L.A. - no matter the endless excuses given in the past by Delgadillo, Villaraigosa and the City Council - is public information gleaned from a public permitting process.

It is not proprietary information, as stratospherically expensive lawyers like Laura Brill from Irell & Manella, representing Clear Channel, like to claim when trying to keep this information from Los Angeles residents. Now, Building and Safety must release the list of 11,000 billboards, their owners and locations. By April 4. Including the thousands of billboards put up illegally by many billboard companies.

This is information that Los Angeles' dozens of Neighborhood Councils and anti-blight activists have long been waiting for. But Clear Channel has a history of suing to interminably delay fearful City Hall officials from doing the right thing. So stay tuned.

11:28: If you're going to blather on at least read the basic info available to anyone in the papers. As the recent Daily News story about billboards (Orlov's column) noted, it was Rocky Delgadillo who tipped off Clear Channel to the Weekly request, against the wishes of the entire City Council which had ordered him to make a deal with Clear Channel in Jan. 07 to make placement of their billboards totally transparent to the community.

The DN/Orlov column spells this out and that Greuel and Weiss expressed this to the City Attorney's office, and directed him to follow the Council's original directives. Weiss, Greuel and Rosendahl have been totally supportive of their communities on the billboard issue, it's Reyes and Jan Perry who have attacked them for this. Read the David Zahniser article in L A Now/ local section of Times on this, "Two More Billboads -- for a Park?" and Dennis Hathaway in CityWatch.

You should know "the city" is not some monolithic structure, while everyone also knows that Rocky got a half million in free advertising from Clear Channel/CBS and they threw him a lavish party in Beverly Hills a few weeks ago.

I hope Villar is using his money to go to Sacramento to have a fundraiser for him to be re-elected (or whatever else he has in mind). Why isnt he here at the Council, or while someone else is being killed today. Guess he gets better press in Sacraments. Murder in LA is no longer a good photo op unless the victim is a little kid.

If 11:28 is verbatim Stewart, she's so clueless as to who to blame, she's got no right to call herself a reporter, it's like 1:10 said. Jill Stewart is either clueless then, or the one who's afraid of Rocky Delgadillo and won't say what's what, so goes after Villaraigosa? That would be overt political bias and intentionally misleading readers. No wonder the average Joe in this city doesn't know what's going on. (Joe M did get it more than others writing on the blog, like a certain ZD whose rude rants turned away insiders.)

It's SO unfortunate Joseph Mailander isn't writing on this blog anymore.

Joseph CONSISTENTLY wrote articulate pieces on INTERESTING and RELEVANT topics. He didn't bring up the other blogger's farts, or any of the other crap that is inundating this blog.

And on top of it, Joseph even added consistently interesting photos of his part of town.

Keeping content flowing on a blog is difficult, no doubt. But I think that this blog lost is singularly best writer.

And after Nahai used Rosendoh to used the tragic fire fighter incident to try and squeeze a buck out of people...who knows what could happen between now and then.

I periodically write about the on-going fiasco that is California suffering under misrule in Sacramento and its two major cities, LA and SF. Since my last posting, things have only gotten worse.

Currently, the state has a 14 billion dollar shortfall, not surprisingly considering the out of control spending that goes on, added to all the services for illegal aliens. As Tom McClintock, the only sane politician in the state, has repeatedly pointed out, though inflation has risen during the past decade, revenue to the state has risen at a faster rate. The problem is that spending has outpaced both inflation and revenue. Therefore, we have a budget deficit of some 14 billion. Nevertheless, our state government always has the same solution: raise taxes, which is exactly what they want to do now. Thus, they now seek to overturn Proposition 13, which saved many people from losing their homes through rising property taxes, and they also want to revisit the car tax. LA County even wants to access a 3% "Global Warming Tax" on gasoline.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the erstwhile Republican governor, who originally tried to fight the left-wing Democrats and lost, has now given up and merely swims with the tide. The only positive development was a few months back when voters rejected a ballot measure cleverly labeled as a term limits measure that was really designed to allow corrupt politicians like Don Perata and Fabian Nunez to hold onto office. Now they will have to leave public office after this year. No worries. They will just land in some high-paying consulting job-or even better be appointed to some commission that only has to meet once a month but gets paid big bucks.

In Los Angeles, Mayor Tony Villar (the real name of Antonio Villaraigosa)continues his mismanagement of Los Angeles. The city is swamped with illegal aliens, which is just fine with Villaraigosa and his lackey police chief, William Bratton. The schools are collapsing, and less than 50% of the students are graduating from high school. Now Villaraigosa is trying to squeeze more tax money from Angelenos to make up for LA's own budget shortfall.

But it gets better; It has now been revealed that for the past several years, the Department of Water and Power (DWP)has been blessed with millions of dollars of surplus that they have contributed to the city's general fund. This year, the contribution was 175 million dollars. Yet, the LA City Council has just approved a rate hike for water and electricity that will amount to 270 million dollars to DWP coffers. This leads one to ask why DWP didn't just hold on to the surplus instead of giving it to the city's general fund-or why government agencies have these surpluses surpluses to begin with.

DWP is apparently quite a well-off enterprise in LA. In addition to generous salaries and benefits, DWP even offers free lactation classes to its employess and dependents.

Let me repeat that: DWP offers free lactation classes to its employees and dependents-courtesy naturally of the local taxpayers. Yet they need a rate hike.

Then there is the Great City of San Francisco under Mayor Gavin Newsome and countless other quacks. This is the same city that attracted hoards of homeless people with the offer of $400 a month. Just show up in San Francisco, register with the city, and collect your $400 a month-courtesy of the good taxpayers of the city.

Of course, San Francisco is a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. Now it is publicly proclaiming this fact in a series of multi-lingual ads designed to attract more illegal aliens. So illegal aliens are welcome, but the US military, its recruiters and retired battleships are not.

If you are wondering about the hard-working, tax-paying people in California who are being asked to pay for all this, here is the answer. Many are leaving. Those who are fed up with the high taxes and the business owners who are fed up with the regulations and taxes are leaving to friendlier places like Nevada and Arizona. They are taking their wealth and their jobs with them. As the ratio of taxpayers declines in relation to the tax-beneficiaries, those left behind will face higher and higher taxes. How long before we reach the point where those who depend on government largesses outnumber those who have to pay? When that happens, ballot measures that are required to raise certain taxes will start to pass based on pure self-interest.

Those of you in the other 49 states who think bigger government is the answer to our problems should examine the case of California.
