Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Monday
Looks like the website for former Mayor galpal Mirthala Salinas' upcoming wedding to real estate agent Yanni Raz has been taken down. Curbed LA and Franklin Avenue linked to the site last week; but click on the link now and you get an error. Google's cache however can show you at least some of what was there. The best part of the site is a section called "My Woman is Back on Track Again."
The LA Times reports that more and more non-Latino elected City officials are speaking bilingually these days. Laura Chick, Wendy Greuel and Jan Perry have began to speak in Spanish as well as English; though the 52 year old Perry once told someone she was pregnant when she meant embarrassed.
This might be some good information for Zev's Mayoral campaign. He's been saying that the current zoning "as is" allows for the construction of enough housing to meet LA's forecast needs without developers or politicians needing variances or other big changes to existing plans, law and codes. A new study confirms that.
Daily News columnist Mariel Garza doesn't get it in a recent screed on illegal aliens and the economy. Her point is the economy sucks, so fewer jobs means illegal aliens will be incentivized to come here and the racists who hate them should be happy. The point is that the concern over illegal immigration - and chiefly illegal immigrants who are gang members - is not about racism or any other red herring you want to toss out there. What is it about the word illegal do you not get. And the honest truth is that it's the illegal and legal gang members who are terrorizing their own the most and who are hurt the most. Not those whom you refer to as racists.
On the other hand the News had a great op-ed piece Sunday from Doug McIntyre. He points out the usual liberal hypocrisy (much of what we saw in the comments section here over the weekend) of the City Clowncil when it comes to Jamiel's death: Politicians are either indifferent or uncomfortable talking about a Black youth murdered by a Latino. Had Pedro Espinosa been Peter Epperson Council Members like Richard Alarcon, Bill Rosendahl, Ed Reyes et al would be blaming talkradio for Jamiel's murder. The saddest part of it all mentioned in Doug's piece (and pointed out as well by Zuma Dogg in the comments here) is the joking, laughing and lack of attentiveness by Council Members during Anita Shaw's address, leading her nine year old son to ask his mother "Why are they laughing?"
The Mayor has a goal to plant a million trees in LA. He's claiming credit for having planted over a 100,000 so far. David Zahniser (via Siel at the LA Times eco-blog) spills the beans that the city includes in that count thousands of little seedlings handed out to people as "planted" whether there's any verification if the baby trees were placed in the ground or not. Yet again, the usual song & dance and smoke & mirrors from the Mayor's office.
Remember the name Jim Beall. He's an idiot Democratic (what else) Assemblyman from San Jose who wants to increase the tax on beer some 1500%. No word yet on what Gail Goldberg thinks of the plan.
Actors Glenn Close and Ethan Hawke were part of 1400 Screen Actors Guild members who circulated a petition insisting that only actors who work regularly (traditionally a small percentage of SAG's overall membership) should be allowed to vote on the union's next contract with producers.
They don't want any more jails in Lancaster. Rick Orlov reports that residents near the Mira Loma Detention Center are adamant about constructing a new jail there.
Britney Spears has done it again. She rear ended another vehicle with her Mercedes on the freeway Saturday night.
In the Former Fishwrap of Record, Richard S. Ginell reviews conductor Ivan Fischer shepherding the premiere of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday night. Ginell recounts the excitement upon hearing that all too familiar first bass note, but was a bit disappointed overall, saying "the performance seemed to give in to the temptation of losing itself in all that color while sacrificing propulsion and power." Of course, there's always this cool version of "Sprach" below:
Labels: britney spears, doug mcintyre, jim beall, mariel garza, million trees, Mirthala Salinas, rick orlov, screen actors guild, walt disney concert hall, zev yaroslavsky

The Mayor's "Million Tree" program does have a verification process when they distribute seedlings which includes a form you fill out to tell them where you planted your seedling. The problem is some people just don't bother to fill out and return the form.

Dumb ass morons on city council. Instead of encouraging the illegals to learn how to speak ENGLISH they cater to them like a bunch of idiots. ILLEGALS can't vote, they aren't involved in their communities except breaking the laws and illegal vending. Clowncil should do a public service announcement in Spanish and tell the illegals to stop breaking the law. No wonder this city is being embarrassed and humiliated all over cable news like Fox, CNN, and Lou Dobbs.

Villaraigosa is going to use Parker Center as his prop for State of City today. Poor cops will be his props and they hate it and him. He will say LAPD has more officers but don't be fooled. LAPD has less then 1,000 on patrol on any given night for 4 million people. He's going to talk about gang violence yet his so called Gang Czar making over $100,000 has done nothing and is a failure. The city is in the worst shape in the history of this city with budget and the Mayor has been the biggest failure with no accomplishments to speak of. He will travel to help Hillary in N. Carolina instead of addressing LA issues on our tax dollars but lazy reporters won't report that.

ZD says Million Trees L.A. is a farce. It's true about the alfalfa sprouts that they were handing out and passing them off as a tree.
I went to the Million Tree L.A. kickoff in Hazard Park: They handed me something that looked like a little marijuana clone plant.
If this was a tree...then a guppy counts for "Save the Whales".
AND...after you get the tree...you have go online, sign up for a training program...then attend the training program on how to plant and care for the tree.
WHEN PEOPLE HEAR "MILLION TREES LA" people probably think the city is driving around in maintenance trucks planting them across town.
I MEAN...I COULD HOLD THE TREE THEY HANDED ME IN THE PALM OF MY HAND.

The person arrested for the murder of Jamiel Shaw hasn't been tried and convicted, and Doug McIntyre and many others stirring up passion seem to be ignoring that fact. Our system of justice is based on the presumption of innocence, so until that process has concluded we cannot say that a black was murdered by a Mexican. The issue of undocumented immigration is certainly a valid topic of discussion, but this ranting based on a rush to judgment smacks of vigilantism.

Yeah for County Supervisors. Pretty sad they have to clean up the mess in council districts like Reyes, Perry and Huizar who refuse to go after illegal vendors

How do these people sleep at night with no respect for themselves?

Christina Gonzalez filed the suit Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. She also alleges negligence and assault and battery and is asking for unspecified general, triple and punitive damages

No it does not. It rankles of what's been missing for weeks, LOGIC.. In this case the trial is only a formality. This ignorant latino went "hunting", and he fulfilled the decree set down by his gang the 18th St. gang. That they shall kill blacks at every opportunity. What was this illegal invader even doing on LA streets? I don't care that he was brought here when he was four. His parents should have been made to follow proper channels like every other newcomer to the United States of Mexico (oops)

The Mayor's failed "Million Trees" program and the last failed and most-hated DONE administration, and the heavily conflicted interim CD14 management post-Villar and pre-Huizar - reportedly responsible for the community-insulting Hollenbeck mural -- and the constantly contentious and grossly unproductive (not even 80 FAKE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHES) Eagle Rock field office of CD14 under short-timer Councilmember Villaraigosa all have ONE thing in common.
Lisa SarNO! ran them all (into the ground).
It's pure science to determine why all these governmental functions failed. They had only that one variable in common.
In L.A. City government, it isn't the "cream" that rises to the top, but the same kind of dead "floaters" the county coroner fishes out of local bodies of water.
Someone should add that to her resume: "Nothing I manage works out well for L.A. taxpayers" (and yet the mayor still keeps appointing me to things).
Anonymous said:
Yup, time to move Sarno again before someone else starts noticing the connections.
If City Hall reporters wanted to really get to the meat of government non-production, they'd begin tacking these anti-productive GMs around as they play musical chairs. Connect the dots on any number of them, and you'll see the same failed track records over and over again.

I don't think that your and Mariel Garza's thoughts were that far off. She wasn't doing a column on gangs. She did one on Economics and illegal immigrants and whether or not there was incentive for them to come here in the first place.
You yourself stated that gangs, be they legal citizens or illegal immigrants, are the problem.
So let her do her column on her issue and you use your blog for your issue.
We have a problem with gangs. Some of them are black and very legal. Some of them are Latino and very legal. Some of them are illegal immigrants. The bottom line though is that we have a gang problem and somebody needs to fix it.
Like Rick Orlov tried to point out to the ignorant masses.. Special Order 40 doesn't allow cops to pick up that group of men in a pick-up truck who LOOK like they MIGHT be illegal just to ask them. However, if they run a red light and the cops pull them over, they most certainly can ask them if they are legal or not.
You are all so confused about what Special Order 40 is that you sound pathetically scary when you talk about it.
Not learning to speak Spanish and wanting to work in the political arena is just plain stupid. Not learning to speak Spanish and wanting to live in Los Angeles is just plain stupid.
Communication is one of the most effective tools we have and the city will work better if we can all communicate. My Italian relatives barely speak English and I'm so glad that nobody where they live treats them so badly. Learning a new language is difficult and I applaud the council members who try.

HEELLOO YOU ARE WRONG. EVEN LATINOS BORN AND RAISED IN THIS CITY SPEAK ENGLISH. Why should we have to learn spanish because of dumb ass council morons and all the illegals. Growing up in LA no one spoke SPANISH everyone assimilated and learned the language of this country and it is ENGLISH. The media should do a story of the thousands of Latinos born and raised in this city who speak English as their first language by choice. That would really turn the moron clowncil members on their heads.

Another bad thing about having your kid learn Spanish from some illiterate maid is, they learn a lower form. In high school and college I studied Castillian spanish, which is like Oxford English is to Cockney, the educated classes vs. the maids.
I respect upper-class Hispanic culture as it derives from Spain, except for the macho part, but that's very different from Mexican peasant Spanish and a kid learning that is doomed to being looked down on in the upper class worlds of business and the arts.
I've noticed that a lot of Mexicans here don't even use tenses correctly, like past conditional, they simplify to a 5th grade level.

Good juxtapositioning, Mayor Sam.
I can hear the wheels turning the Parque Skeleton's brain, right now.
"The same way we Tony-rigged it so that everyone who ever signed in at a meeting in CD14 to discuss neighborhood watches suddenly became a whole FAKE "watch" when the next election drew near, now every single seed that drops into the dirt from a sickly city-planted sapling can be considered another tree planted.
Hell, all you need is a couple hundred really 'seedy' trees and a 'stiff' wind, and you can claim you planted a MILLION easily.
We just need to find a handful of trees that, like my favorite 'seedy' client and his 'stiff'... um... 'wand'), REALLY know how to spread their seeds around town!"
Anyway, who would have bought into it and let him build a whole damn department around this lame idea if it was called the "Million Seeds L.A" program, or even "Millón de Semillas" (and not charter schools, mind you).

Perry should just go on telling her Hispanic listeners that she's getting horny or is pregnant, makes as much sense as anything else she's saying, no, a lot more.
Like her making heroes out of ClearChannel/CBS, arch- villains who got their bought homeboy Rocktard to negotiate a deal with them that was the Opposite of what the council told them (which was to pay the city to inspect their signs, and remove the illegal ones -- they've got some 11,000 signs and the fee per is $300. The city sure could use that, but they're refusing to pay, suing the city for something the MTA did years ago and for not allowing them to put signs anywhere they want, including giant digital ones. The two Perry fought for are 7-story right next to traffic lanes, really dangerous.)
I still can't get over her attacking the sane citizens trying to talk sense about the billboards and ClearChannel/CBS not only as greedy and shallow at every meeting but not even understanding basic English lingo -- like what "Dog and Pony Show" means.
"See," she told the Council, "This is what I've had to content with in PLUM, too, these kinds of comments, calling you, my constituents, dogs and ponies. What kinds of people call their fellow human beings animals?"
That woman needs to learn English before bad Spanglish.
She and equally stupid Reyes kept saying that if they'd had the park, "there would have been no Jamiel Shaws."
Yeah, like the high school football player would have been in the park. He had every right to be on his own streets. And REyes' parks all have fortress walls and/or are built high above ground level to discourage drivebys. But now they're perfect protection for drug dealers and walk-up shootings, which are more the trend now.
(Came down from LaEME: more accurate and to avoid the extra penalty tacked on to a sentence of anyone in a car involved in a driveby. Nice to see how they can use their cabezas to outsmart the idiots like Reyes and the other Mexican "leaders.")
Maybe Perry's new hats are to shield her sorry brain from all that outside stimulation it can't handle. Enough rattling loose in there as it is.

OK, Ch. 4 is running it...but he's already stated the above as his "new plan" with Cardenas and Janice Hahn the other money-sucking leeches trying to persuade us that taxing us more without even trying to deport the illegal criminals who make up 80% of the worst gangs is the answer.

Mayor Sam,
Someone wrote about Lisa Sarno and the way she was moved around to assistant GM positions. Someone should check into all the asst. GM positions and find out how many came through the ranks and how many were appointed through one day status and given civil servant status. Many staff of Mayor and Council were provided with an opportunity of taking a clerk typist exam and given one day status so they can be part of the city's retirement system and be protected. Dalila Sotelo was once te Fire Department Commissioner President. How did she become an assistant manager at CRA? How did Laura Chick's assistant become a special investigator and is now an executive assistant to Chick making probably about $185K. Also, Janice Wood, former commissioner at public works is now in personnel as a special investigator or workers comp. How do these things get done? Someone should investigate - David Zahniser pull the records and investigate. Talk to Maggie Whelan, Personnel Director. She's probably sickened by the whole ordeal but there's nothing she can do because all GM's are at will. How sickening is that? These appointments are raiding our budget through additional payroll and salaries. INVESTIGATE!!!

By the way, the presumption of innocence that 9:25 a.m. complained was applicable to Espinoza, and we had to wait until there was a conviction to talk about him as the murderer.
The presumption applies to the justice system- court, jail, bail, etc.- not to the real world.
The "process" treats the defendants with that presumption. Everyone else is outside the process, but the reports of news media say "alleged" to avoid swaying or tainting the judicial process against the slimeball.
When will Villaraigosa ever stop saying "Angelenos" over and over? How about "city residents"?
He needs to enunciate a bit better with "Hundred" and stop saying "Hunnert"- the street-ish version of the word. His feigned sophistication is about the only thing transparent in his administration.
Whoever wrote the speech made the Mayor out to be a bigger liar than he was before. I hope he doesn't get a bonus for forgetting that Villaraigosa sticks with a Yukon SUV that doesn't do much for the environment that he treated so reverently in the speech. Hypocrite, Hippocrite, Hippocrite-

The Mayor did admit tonight that the city hasn't quite planted a million trees, and laughed it off. Says they're still trying.
Also admitted L A has the smallest middle class in any city in America.
That's quite an admission, a damning one if he stopped to think about it. Means we're already the most third- world city, with a huge poor, uneducated class and a small wealthy class, two great extremes. These wealthy people are mostly on the westside, in Brentwood and gated communities, but they're starting to wake up that people like TJ in the Hills Reyes have their Death Ray eyes aimed at them.
The west valley has most of the actual middle class left, and that's the area that gets back closest to what it pays into the city for taxes -- most decent schools, public hospitals, etc. But Steve Lopez' article today quotes liberal Takofsky as saying he smells an uprising if these people keep getting stiffed in school funding, because LAUSD knows they'll fund-raise to make ends meet for their kids. That's been going on for over a decade already, just getting worse. Almost surprised that Lopez actually says that "illegal immigration is not without great costs and challenges," but what can you do.
As the small middle and upper middle remaining get more pinched, they'll leave too. Lots of us don't want to be forced out of homes we like by foreigners, but sadly there comes a time when making a stand is just too much.
Nothing the Mayor said tonight will stem this exodus of the already tiny middle class.
