The Shrinking Violet of Spring Street
While Steve Lopez was scoring points this morning for doing a columnist's job of landing hard jabs on our itinerant, insouciant Mayor, the Times editorial scribes put on kid gloves.
The set-up:
The Times reported Monday that Villaraigosa has spent 18 of the last 65 days out of town, campaigning for Clinton. In just over two months, that's nearly a third of his time. Traveling with him are City Hall aides (using vacation days) and his police security detail. Is Los Angeles winning or losing from this arrangement?
But the tepid, tentative conclusion:
In the year between now and his intended reelection day, voters can decide whether Villaraigosa packed his suitcase with enough goodies for the city to make the trips worthwhile, or, in fact, whether he was sorely missed when he was gone.
Good grief. Wouldn't want to offend him, would we? That should keep the table at Mozza set for the fishwrappers for a little while yet.
I don't know how the Times came around to that non-opinion, but as for me, I don't want a Mayor who rolls dice for a payoff, I want one who makes the City work with or without one.
Labels: a guy in la, LA Times, mayor antonio villaraigosa

Why would we ever want our Mayor and Councilmembers to learn to be responsible and self reliant in this city?
This city with its over burdensome taxes, bonds and shameless bureaucracy, etc have pushed the business owners and investors like out of the city.
So while he is packing his suitcase, we have been packing ours.
I will be putting my money in plenty of PAC's to help make sure that for his next move he will need a truck to help him out of Getty House.
Or will he have the city buy a truck to add to his fleet of vehicles?

Who paid for Steve Lopez' wild goose chase? With the Times also layoff off people like the Daily News, and Cheapskate Perv Zell intent on driving down its standards and getting rid of real reporters, just how useful is this waste of time and money?
Maybe if Lopez hadn't been quite so salacious in his earlier reports, NOT limited to asking if the affair was impacting his job as this revision implies -- he would get real interviews instead of being treated like the sensation-seeking pest he is.
And it wouldn't have been hard to let the Mayor hang himself over that affair without being snotty -- "Senorita Salinas" and her awards, this and that, all sounded idiotic from a Mayor who wants to be a major international player. Could have left it at that...
Serves you right, Stevie.

They do appear a bit "conflicted."

Yeh, pretty lame editorial. Neither fish now fowl... But probably not a surprise in light of the Times' ongoing efforts to keep the mayor at least somewhat happy....

A table at Mozza? You figure the restaurant is in the tank for MAV and will reward LAT editorial writers with Saturday night reservations?
Mayor Sam said:
230 is classic you know who spinning for Tony Villar.
First off is the full court press slam on whoever the mayor's "opponent" is in the given instance.
Next is the gratuitous slam at the Mayor or claim to be in some class of non-Antonio supporter (e.g. "I'm not a Democrat but...) designed to throw you off and make you think the person is not a pro-V spinner.
That's a heck of a lot of rotten MEAT!

Don't you people understand that MAV can't be defeated unless he has an opponent? And, no, Walter Moore doesn't count and Zev isn't running. What Lopez is doing is right out of the standard columnist's bag of tricks. It's been used a million times before. It''s not original. Eventually MAV will talk to him and the stupid game will end.

Only Antonio Villaraigosa could make James Hahn seem like a great mayor.
Suckers, we are, for voting for him due solely to his race and photogenic qualities.

That's how you Obama voters will feel if he wins.

Hooray for Steve Lopez!! If the reporters can't or won't comment on the mayor's public-be-damned attitude, then at least Lopez isn't intimidated or afraid of speaking up about Hizzoner.
And, yes, Antonio will likely be reelected by a "landslide", especially with all the money he will be able to raise from his cronies. But will that make him a respected leader? will that mean he has accomplished a lot for the city? NO.....

And just think of the similar personality traits of both Antonio and the Billarys. Great match-ups here.
Go Obama....

Walter Moore doesn't count?
The legal voters in L.A.
believe he does! WE need
a NEW MAYOR,a REAL MAYOR who
represents the Legal Citizens
of this city for a change!!
