HOW COME NOBODY'S WRITING HERE ABOUT THE TIMES ARTICLE ON VILLARAIGOSA'S INCESSANT ABSENCE FROM THE CITY?

JESUS CHRIST, THIS IS A BIG STORY, WITH THE FISHWRAP FINALLY GOING AFTER THE MAYOR, AND MAYOR SAM ISN'T EVEN ON IT????

BTW, THE STORY FAILED TO MENTION THAT THERE'S A FINANCIAL "EMERGENCY" IN THE CITY AND THAT THE MAYOR SAID HE'D BE HERE FOR EMERGENCIES.

YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS FOR NOT BEING ON THIS STORY HOURS AGO. AND THE FACT THAT VILLARAIGOSA CUT SHORT HIS TEXAS TRIP BECAUSE HE HEARD THAT THIS STORY WAS COMING OUT.

is it true that ladaily blog (zuma dogg) already overtook this blog in the rankings?

9:30a, the answer is "Yes."

That's why there's now a big flushing sound emanating from your speakers every time you log on to Mayor Sam's Sister City.

And 9:08, you left your Caps Lock on...

9:08a -- Get back to work. Cardenas needs his staff answering his phones not sitting on the blogs.

Jack Hoff, why didn't you link to the Daily News Opinion on this very story, about Cardenas grandstanding and footdragging for political control while gangs are running around out of control?

This weekend, a carload of black gangbangers opened fire on some Asians, killing one, after taunting them with "where's the party" and chasing them on the freeway. Every weekend there are killings right in Hollywood now, North Hollywood Park (apparently a battle ground between Vineland Boys and some other gang), even heading into Westwood and the West Valley.

9:08, yes there are stories on the mayor's being out of town in both the papers. I'm more concerned with public safety and gangs.

There are some expenses involved with the Mayor being gone, but his argument that Shilling for Hillary would pay off for L A makes sense.

Couple of the people the Times quotes complaining are elderly HOA members who complain about anything he does anyway, like about traffic issues, one of them is an opponent of his Pico-Olympic Plan. She needs him here to chew him out some more? Frankly, I don't want to think that the functioning of the city depends so much on ONE guy being here, that his deputies can't handle things while he's gone.

The article also blames him for not being here during the May First Mellee getting out of hand. That's one case where I think the marchers should never have been given that level of free reign, so much police "protection," and look what happened. That was bad planning, pandering to illegals instead of making smart choices BEFORE the march ever happened.

Yes, Zuma and his followers would be screaming for "the Midget Mayor's" blood, calling him all kinds of 4-letter names -- and yes, it may take a while to get used to the fact that his crazy energy isn't here and at City Hall, maybe he'll go back there -- but what HAS he actually accomplished, anyway, except to drag the level of discourse down to his level? I for one don't miss the endles "look at me trying to rap" You Tube posts.

Heard on NPR that police from all over are coming to L A this week to learn anti-gang straties from US, e.g. from Salvador. So they send us their vicious "veterans" of their political wars, they come in as illegals and get hardened and even more vicious, then go home to practice their craft in Salvador, and then their cops have to come here to learn what to do about it.

Haven't heard about this is the local papers.

Thanks for posting that info
10:28. All of L.A. has been thinking otherwise, as the LA daily blog averages -0- comments per post. Good to know people are clicking.

Hope that these "silent clickers" aren't the same people slowing us all down on the freeway to look at car wrecks on the other side.

It's so hard to look away isn't it?

10:54 am,

Oh no...it's not about clicks. I registered my blog at BNN because I like the way it feeds my stories into their update page and I like the way their front page for my blog compiles all the stories.

BUT, I MUST CLARIFY...that ranking at 10:54 is for last week, and I just registered my blog yesterday (Sunday) after that ranker was updated.

But sure, I'm curious as hell to find out where my little ole blog will rank. (Although like anything new...it will take a while for people to find me. Hopefully, that's what google search engines and the BNN front page is for.)

Meanwhile...remember...the good news is that people don't just have to pick one blog or the other.

How come no one compares laist to metroblogging? Or LA Observed with some other blog?

10:16a, thanks for the thoughtful response.

I didn't link the DN editorial because I figured that hip people like yourself would have already read it and would post something intelligent anyway. So, good on ya. I'll let the rest of L.A. catch up to you.

As for the Zuma posts, it's all been said already -- ad infinitum. Maybe it's just me, but how we are addressing the gang issue in Los Angeles is a much more important issue than where the MS blog stands in "rankings."

10:53a - as a former bartender, I can tell you there is no such thing as a "good" Ramos Fizz recipe. It's a horrible drink typically ordered by people who have never had one before -- and what a waste of decent gin! But if you try the one on Epicurious.com, make sure you use only two or three drops of orange flower water instead of the 1/2 oz. they have listed. And thanks for your post, it was quite JackHoffian.

AS long as the clowncil members pretend to care about the gang violence nothing will get done. Pleaseeee they've had Connie Rice report going on two years and not a damn thing has been done. Now they want to cut cops and cry when the CAO and CLA said they should each give up one car. These idiot council members are jerks and so out of touch with this city its shocking.

March 03, 2008 3:21 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Got it, 3:21p, thanks.

I would argue with you that the councilmembers don't care. I'm pretty sure they do. I also think they're frustrated as hell with the issue and the amazing lack of long term results; which is why they are coming up with some uh, "interesting" ideas as to how to throw more money at the problem.

But since you spoke up, let's leave the microphone in your hands a little while longer and ask, "If you were in charge, how would you handle the gang problem and how would you pay for it?"

The final challenge is to see if you can do it in a paragraph!

I look forward to your response.

I would handle the gang problem by first repealing SP-40, and allowing LAPD to ask immigration status of all people breaking any law.

The police should be able to arrest and start the deportation process for the illegal alien gang members.

Then I would send the bill/cost of handling all the illegal alien to Washington, force the federal government to face the realitys of crime and cost of allowing all these illegal aliens into our country.

25% of the inmates in California jails are illegal aliens, this would the first place I would start.

Then I would start gang prevention and education in the schools. I would show the kids videos of all the gang members in jail. Or better yet every school kid should visit a state prison like Pelican Bay to see where most hard core gang members end-up. The kids need to learn how gang members kill their own members to protect their own ass.

The gang culture has become part of the mexican culture especially here in Los Angeles. The barrio mentality and the gang is my family type of brain-washing is used by many mexican gangs to recruit kids with a weak mind and/or family problems.

We need to start placing more police on schools and geeting rid of gangs and drugs in the LAUSD schools. Too many good kids are subjected to gangs, drugs and violence in the schools. Parents need to be adviced as soon as possible if their kids are associating with gang members.

And don't give money to former hard-core gang members who are now "reformed" and want to help the kids. A kid does not need low life loser as a mentor or role model.

The bodies in Los Angeles are dropping like flies, it seems as though, every day we read about muders in the streets of Los Angeles. And the Mayor is busy out of town and the City Council is useless, as usual. HBO could do a movie about L.A. Politics "The Wire (Short-Circuit)".

High School Football Hero Cut Down By Gun Violence

LOS ANGELES A 17-year-old football star was shot and killed walking home Sunday night, according to authorities.

Monday, friends and family recalled Jamiel Shaw and angrily lashed out at the gang violence that took his life. Police say that Shaw was not affiliated with a gang and was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Thanks, 10:00p, okay 11:07 (if you're a different poster), you're on. You gave us the sad results, now give us the preventive medicine.

Would like to offer that I agree with 10p on suing the Feds to cover the cost of illegal immigration. It's their issue, they need to handle it. If they are unwilling to handle it, then the state needs to sue. If the state is unwilling to sue, then the county or the city should step up and file. The courts are there, we should hash this out.

JACKHOFFIAN UPDATE: (source: Orlov, DN, 3/6/08) "Cardenas said he has scheduled a March 14 hearing on a report by City Controller Laura Chick that recommends putting the mayor in charge of gang programs. But Cardenas said he is not convinced all the programs should be centered in the Mayor's Office."
