Defending Cardenas

MS clued me in to this -- Why is Tony Cardenas the only L.A. City councilmember with a ‘Legal Defense Fund’? According to the City Ethics Commission filings, Cardenas’s defense fund raised $17,000 last year and spent $10,250. Almost all contributions to the fund were from real estate and development interests.

Well, you gotta wonder. Cardenas, like the man he sleezily emulates unsuccessfully – Alex Padilla -- is known for adsorbing large sums of tribal gaming money as well as developer money. When he ran against WGreuel for CD 2 and lost (barely!), this was a big behind-the-scenes issue as was the supposed large contributions from developer J. Acevado the Slum Lord King. Now Padilla Jr. is in CD 6, and you have to ask yourself whether he’ll ever author any legislation of real consequence to the people of this City. But this in itself isn’t a crime. If it were, Tom LaBonge would be in prison for life without the possibility of parole.

Soooo…. I'm guessing that Cardenas has this fund because... he is some kind of a liability to someone? Someone thinks he is some kind of liability? He IS some kind of liability? He brought some kind of liability with him? Well, for $20K, it can't be much of a liability. Maybe he was caught with a legislature page in a blue dress.... Hmmm... HMMMMM....

Anyone know? Or want to pretend to know and expound at length on said subject?

Pleassseeeee.. If you think Cardenas is the only one with this type of fund think again. Every council member has money hiding. Why do you think they're all squirming hoping the reporters don't dig too deep. Antonio has his so called School fund, Huizar keeps close ties to developers and again is transferring money. What is this money for and who does it go to? Why isn't anyone asking those questions except Sharon Brewer?

..08-0536 CD 14 MOTION (HUIZAR - PARKS) relative to funding for community services and support in Council District 14. Recommendation for Council action, SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE MAYOR: TRANSFER $50,000 from the Central Los Angeles Recycling and Transfer Station Community Amenities Trust Fund No. 47S/14 to the General City Purposes Fund No. 100/56, Account No. 0714, Council District 14 Community Services, to provide funding for community amenities in Council District 14.

She was? I thought she was an immigrant?

Nope not an immigrant but not an attorney (as far as I can tell) either - and sadly, passed away about nine years ago.

Maria Encarnacion ``Chonita'' Quezada Cardenas, mother of Assemblyman Tony Cardenas, died while visiting friends and relatives in Temastian, Mexico, on Tuesday. She was 71.

Chonita Cardenas was born on March 25, 1928, in Avalon, Santa Catalina Island Catalina Island: see Santa Catalina.. She was the daughter of immigrant workers and traveled with her parents throughout California and other farm states during harvests. She spent some of her younger years living in Temastian, in the Mexican state of Jalisco Jalisco (hälē`skō), state (1990 pop. 5,302,689), 31,152 sq mi (80,684 sq km), W Mexico, bounded on the west by the Pacific. Guadalajara is the capital. Jalisco is dominated by the southern end of the Sierra Madre Occidental and the western extremity of the chain of volcanic mountains extending across central Mexico., where she met her future husband, Andres Cardenas. The Cardenas family moved to California in 1947 and settled in Pacoima, where they reared 11 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1993, and by their second son, Andres Cardenas Jr., in 1971.

She is survived by her children Catalina ``Katy'' Gomez; Elvira ``Vera'' C. Loa; Richard Cardenas; Elisa ``Licha'' Herrera; Maria Trinidad ``Trini'' Rodriguez; Maria ``Nani'' Sanchez; Dr. Jose Cardenas; Maria del Rosario ``Challo'' Reyes; Ernesto ``Teto'' Cardenas and Assemblyman Antonio ``Tony'' Cardenas, D-Panorama City.

A rosary and viewing are scheduled at 7:45 p.m. Monday, with a funeral Mass at noon Tuesday. Both services will be held at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 10390 Remick Ave., Pacoima. Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.

Donations in her memory may be made to The Andres Cardenas Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization for educational scholarships, at P.O. Box 341230, Arleta, CA 91334-1230.

Tony IS the only one with this type of fund, Cardenas spinner at 10:42. That's why the Times brought it up.

He has three funds, so this twenty thou is just one of three. Each for a different liability.

You are right, though, that Huizar and Parks and Hahn, are among the biggest spenders of city money for misc. reasons to make themselves look good, like benefactors at the taxpayer's expense.

Does Sharon Brewer do anything besides run around to every city committee, from the NC level to City Hall, budget, etc., harping on the fee waivers and why the city doesn't charge more for private events on public property? That last one should be checked out, but when someone is always saying the same thing, it rings tired and gets drowned out. (Like Arnold Sachs, and never mind the Jabba the Hut lady and her constant companion.)

The city IS allowing too many marches and parades which require cops and street services that aren't reimbursed.

Cardenas has 9 people living under his roof, and talks about having fifty people over on a Sunday "like any Mexican family." Upper class Mexicans don't do that anymore, they also prefer the quiet of the affluent classes. No way is Mama a prof.

This is more than a personal matter, though. It's why he and Reyes and Huizar don't understand how upset people in affluent areas become when their parking and peace is taken away by huge buildings with no parking like they want, or one big house with multi-generational families in it, and all those cars hogging the street, the tons of kids running around, the endless late an loud parties.

Wow, Tony's mama had 10 kids, even though she was born to farm working immigrants and wasn't wealthy. What more do you want as an example of how Mexicans are taking over California by sheer numbers? How many grandkids between all these people? Even if they're not the working poor, it's a bad example of reproductive irresponsibility in a global society of shrinking resources and supplies.

Not to mention at the local level, how much one family costs the society for schools, services.

You forgot to the word "NOT" in your sentence.

I can see where you could think that, maybe...but that is not me, and doesn't give credit to the person who it really is.

Connect the dots.

Alarcon gets former buddy Acevedo appointed to the Building and Safety Committee before he figures out how corrupt he is.

At the same time, both are involved with shady housing "non-profit" called "NEED."

NEED needs help from Commission because its apartments are not safe.

Padilla -- then a staffer for Cardenas -- replaces Acevedo on Commission as he takes over fiduciary responsibility for NEED.

Padilla repeatedly votes for extensions for Acevedo to comply with orders to bring housing to minimum safety standards.

NEED acquires more properties -- and guess who handles the transactions? Tony Cardenas.

Then Acevedo skims money (embezzles?) from Corina Alarcon's domestic violence shelter projects to pay for cost over-runs on NEED projects. Alarcon gets wise and distances himself after getting elected to the Senate.

What ever happened to NEED? And Acevedo?

Cool it with the "PetraFried is Zuma Dogg" crap.

Can't someone be verbose without being Zuma? (Sorry ZD)

Sheesh.

And yeah, I can't spell either. But neither can the damn spell checker on this blog. So sue me.

4:19, if you are referring to "adsorb", I suggest a dictionary. I meant a-d-sorb. Goes along with the sleezy, oil-slick visual. It is spelled correctly.

Acevado/Acevedo is another thing altogether. (eff me.)
