Open Thread for Monday

Lots going on and feel free to blog away dum dums, but here's one item that caught my eye, courtesy of our friends at Metroblogging LA.

Are many celebrity paparazzi actually immigrants working here illegally? Apparently many of the photogs who chase Britney Spears and other celebrities - and who have leather loving former motorcycle cop Denny Zine getting a Woodrow Wilson over an even bigger piece of designer legislation than Jan Perry's fast food ban - are Brits here illegally working on a tourist visa.

Could be a big two fer for Denny!

Why worry about a few illegal British photographers. We have millions of illegal aliens from mexico here California, and hundreds of thousands are hard-core criminals, and the majority are costing us billions in tax dollars How many illegal mexicans are in our jails, how many mexicans are gang members, drug dealers and murderers?

Just read the Los Angeles Times Homicide report, and see that 95% of the suspects are latino with shaved heads, these are the scum we need to deport. The British photographers are a nuisance, they point and shoot with cameras, the illegal mexicans are pointing and shooting guns. Which is the real menace to our society?

Is Dennis Zine a Britney Spears groupie? His ordinance is ridiculos. With all the movie stars that live in HOllywood the smart know not to go to high profile restaurants and tell the photographers. They are more discreet. Dennis should send Britney a bill for $25,000 and then some for all the resources used to keep her mental self from always going out and putting others in danger. Zine's ordinance is a perfect example of the stupidity of council motions.

What should US cable news be doing, other than leading the hour with live updates from Britney Spears? Put another way, what does US cable news do better that it should be doing instead? The answer, my answer, is nothing. It's perfectly tuned by the lords of the manor to service the land of genetically modified bread and circuses. What has it ever demonstrated to justify a higher expectation? This age has gone crazy over celebrities and it's pop culture. We take ordinary men and woman who have skill (or not so much) in singing and playing and and put them in the spotlight. We single out gifted athletes and turn them into demigods. Multitudes bask in their reflected glory. They line up for hours to catch a glimpse (oh, joy and rapture!) or to get their signature scrawled on a piece of paper. A huge industry spins off from the celebrity craze: fan clubs, apparel, bobblehead dolls, and endorsements. Boris Pasternak in his classic, Doctor Zhivago, captured something of the profound impact of a Man who put all other "celebrities" into the abyss. He was speaking of a certain Man of Nazareth who would never be exposed as a cheat or deceiver, or whose secret life belied the press releases. You can insert the name Hollywood, or pop culture for ROME below,

"Rome was a flea market of borrowed gods and conquered people, a bargain basement on two floors, earth and heaven, a mass of filth convoluted in a triple knot as in an intestinal obstruction. Dacians, Herulians, Scythians, Samartians, Hyperboreans, heavy wheels without spokes, eyes sunk in fat, sodomy, double chins, illiterate emperors, fish fed on the flesh of learned slaves. there were more people in the world than there have ever been since, all crammed into the passages of the Coloseum, and all wretched. "And then, into this tasteless heap of gold and marble, He came, light and clothed in an aura, emphatically human, deliberately provincial, Galilean, and at that moment gods and nations ceased to be and man came into being---man the carpenter, man the plowman, man the shepherd with his flock of sheep at sunset, man who does not sound in the least proud, man thankfully celebrated in all the cradle songs of mothers and in all the picture galleries the world over."
Boris Pasternak

44 homicides since Jan 20 according to LA Times????
that's hardly three weeks.

3 ways we can see already to avoid being killed in Los Angeles.

1. don't be out on the street between 10.30pm and 6 a.m.
2. don't confront strangers
3. don't be a young black or Latino male.

unfortunately #3 is the tough one to avoid for a large percentage of the population.

Jeezus Santiago - Thanks for the rambling diatribe. Did it have some connection to the present or was it just Boris being Boris?

Santiago,
Great comments, just ignore the malodorous comment at 10:12, he obviously does not appreciate the comments of a scholar and gentlemen as you obviously are.

I do "worry about a few illegal Brits" because they blend in so easily here, in fact even brag about how the rubes in So Cal fall for their "classy" accidents so easily, that they're not even questioned. Then if they know how to use a fork and knife without treating them as shovels, they're considered marvels of etiquette.

If they're clean and washed and not obese or malodorous on top of it, why, we make them instant stars.

But if an American tries the same thing over in their country, forget it -- we're treated like unsophisticated morons until we prove ourselves otherwise.

guess they've seen zuma, matt the illegal and hunt the kkk clown, and the other crass commenters at City Hall.

Funny, why none of them would be welcomed with open arms as "sophisticated sounding," and acting, the way the Brits are here.

That bald oaf Zine needs new shades, a hat to hide under and a lollipop to stick in that big, fat mouth so he'll shut up for a change.

What is he running for, when he's termed out? He's taking on this celebrity-by-association measure when he has no celebs in his district who have had this problem. (Calabasas has some sports stars and has-been actors not the hot pretty things the international paps care about).

Looks to me like he's a media whore especially after that SM leather gear, the Nightrider stunt scaring those squatters at the collective farm a while ago (maybe he hoped for a photo op with Darryl Hannah), but the best he can do for ladies, look like they could be sent out for a little air fluffing. Funny, how he and Parks are both trying to run the LAPD ex officio. At least Parks was once Chief, if not a good one, but Baldie never made it off the street beat in 40 years. Now, he's suddenly the boss of Bratten.
