Because You Asked: Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

Ask anyone from the Hawkeye State and indeed you'll find that tater tot casserole is THE national dish of Iowa.

I am sure Barack Obama ate a lot of it.

There is something so delightfully Caucasian about this less than healthy dish. But its easy to make and its delish.

Here is my own recipe:

One pound of ground turkey (you can use beef but I like turkey)
One bag of frozen tater tots
1-2 bags of frozen French cut green beans, peas and carrots or both
One cup of diced onions
One can of toasted onions
Two cans of cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

-Sautee the turkey in a pan. Use olive oil, Pam or whatever to slightly grease the pan. Use your favorite spices but don't overdo it. A little salt and pepper is really enough.

- Sautee the onions in butter or olive oil

- Pour the tater tots and frozen veggies into a casserole dish

- Pour both cans of soup into the dish

- Add in the turkey and diced onions. Stir well mixing all ingredients and making sure the soup coats everything.

- Top it with the toasted onions.

- Put the whole thing in the oven for about 30-45 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

the "national" dish of Iowa? Since when did Iowa become a country?

Sounds like a poor man's version of a peasant Brit food, Shepherd's pie.

The part that is a "national" whitebread ingredient is the mushroom soup for sauce -- in every state the simple people pour the stuff on and into everything from rice and chicken bakes to green bean casserole. Have to admit, it's pretty tasty and easy.

Higby eats both Tater Tot and menudo, and lots of it.

I thought Higby was on a low carbohydrate, high protein diet?

If Higby keeps eating the Tater Tot Casserole he will be called the "Fat Bastard" more often. On the plus side, Higby can do cameo appearances as the "Fat Bastard" around towm. And just maybe play the actual "Fat Bastard" in the next Austin Powers movie.

Whats going on with Mayor Sam? I joined this blog because it told me about political local problems that could and should be addressed. If I want receipes I retreive "Food & Wine"; they have better receipes, better ingredidents and better writers. And I dont think there is a "national" dish made of ground up, left over potatoes.

And to "2:07 AM' I sent you two menudo receipes because I got tired about your comments about menudo receipes then and am sick of it now...look it up in this blog and stop being foolish ass.

Great post! Lot's of fun. Welcome break from politics. Brought back childhood memories. Also remember rice & 1/4"-thick pork chops with CMS and those cans of "french fried onion rings" that topped the green been casserole dish? And what about canned asparagus???(!)

I don't like Tater Tot Casserole or Menudo. Menudo = yuck, yuck, stomach lining, nasty food.

I love pupusas, when I bite into a queso con loroco pupusa and feel the gooey cheese in my mouth I am in heaven. Mayor Sam try a pupusa and see if you don't fall in love with a pupusa.

When did the Tater Tot Casserole become the "state" dish of Iowa?
My mother never made that, but Iowa didn't have Tator-tots when she was around there either.

You can really add some flair and mix it up with the cheese flavored french fried onions for your green bean casserole pleasure.

I am not trying to start a conflict or anything, but Shepherd's Pie is English and not Irish?

Thank GOD my mom moved to CA, and dished out Mexican food.
