Jan Perry's Dumb Idea Gets Even Dumber

Councilwoman Jan Perry thinks that people who live in South Central are too fat and the reason is because there are too many fast food restaurants and not enough sit down restaurants.

Of course any of us with a brain - particularly those of use who have fought the battle of the bulge - know it comes down to making appropriate food choices.

Jan Perry's magic bullet of more sit down restaurants however could actually be off target. A report in Men's Health finds that sit-down restaurants could be unhealthier than fast food!

Sit-down chain restaurants don't want you to know that their food is actually considerably worse for you than the often-maligened fast-food fare. In fact, our menu analysis of 24 national chains revealed that the average entree at a sit-down restaurant contains 867 calories, compared with 522 calories in the average fast-food entree. And that's before appetizers, sides, or desserts --selections that can easily double your total calorie intake

Reduce Obesity
Some health experts say community-wide changes are required to curb the obesity epidemic. Among the proposals:

* Ban trans fats.
* Reduce portion sizes.
* Remove food vending machines from schools, offices and public buildings.
* Rate local restaurants on health and nutrition information and portion sizes.
* Restrict where food can be sold.
* Enact zoning laws to limit fast-food outlets.
* Counter-advertise to remind people of the harm of overeating and unhealthful eating.
* Restrict food advertising.
* Label all food, including restaurant food, for nutritional content.

Yup. This was all over the news couple mos. ago, and I forget which major family chain had a chicken caesar weighing in at 2000 calories - and this is somethng people choose as a "healthy" option. Always look out for the tastiest dressings: loaded with fatty ingredients.

Also Olive Garden: they let you load up on carbs and sauces w/ margarine w/ trans fats, creams, cheap cheeses to feel full; you wouldn't want to know the calories. Not to mention the filling garlic breads, cheesecakes.

Cheesecake Factory is a killer.

Fast food places which give you salad dressings on the sides are a lot better, and I think Jack . the Box has some pretty good ones.

Tell people the calorie/trans fat content, don't ban them.

And I'm not for smaller portions -- as a thin single mom who goes out with my kid, and has a small appetite, we can share a meal or I can take some home for later. When they make portions smaller they still charge the same. I don't want to pay more because fat people have no self control, any more than I want to bail dumb people with no self control out of bad mortgages.

This is why it is crucial to get that diet Coke.

When Chick talks about the need for better risk management to avoid lawsuits against the city that it will lose, I hope that someone will consider the suit that the fast-food restaurants would file against the city when the city can't prove that they are most damaging to people's health than other restaurants.

You'd think a place like PF Chang - Chinese Food - would be healthy. Check it out:

Which is more healthy?

PF Chang Oriental Chicken Salad
Garden vegetables, mixed greens and wonton strips tossed with our light ginger vinaigrette.

A Big Mac at McDonalds

The answer: The Big Mac, surprsingly so. That's not to say you should eat Big Macs or that they are healthy BUT you can be easily fooled by items you think are healthy.

The salad has 900 calories, 42 grams of carbs and 55 grams of fat, six of which are saturated fat.

On the other hand, The Big Mac has 500 calories, 45 grams of carbs and 29 grams of with, ten of which are saturated fat.

Now do you need the government here to help you? No, you do not. The information is available and you can make your own decisions.

Gooood evennnning Mayor Sam,

On a serious note, 2008 marks the year the FDA is likely to issue U.S. food producers an approval to begin selling meat and dairy from cloned animals and their offspring. For the past five years, the FDA has maintained a voluntary moratorium on cloning livestock for the U.S. food supply. The ban gave the agency's researchers time to conduct tests and gather safety data on the effects of consuming meat and dairy produced by cloned animals or their progeny. In December of 2006, FDA released a draft of its animal clone safety assessment, concluding that "meat and milk from clones of adult cattle, pigs, goats and their offspring are as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals" and no glowing in the dark complaints were filed. FDA's assessment has been peer-reviewed by a number of independent cloning and animal health experts, who agree that livestock cloning is not only safe, but "poses no unique risks to animal health when compared to other assistive reproductive technologies currently in use in U.S. agriculture. THANK YOU BUT NO THANKS, I WILL BE HEADING TO THE ADVENTIST BOOK CENTER ON CHEVY CHASE, IN GLENDALE, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BEAUTIFULLY EXPANDED GLENDALE ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER, MUCH MORE FREQUENTLY TO BUY MY VEGETARIAN GROCERIES. As early as last Tuesday, the FDA was likely to have issued U.S. food producers the approval.

A Rats Arse!

I was reading an article about how poor business men in China, in this case poor restaurant owners in China have managed to stay in the black by trapping dozens of rats and then systematically proceeding to drown them. Once dead, one by one they are held by it's long tail by an employee who then lightly torches the rat, burning off it's hair. Next the sleek hairless rats are eviscerated, gutted and filleted. Yikes. Finally they are fried and a dark sweet and sour molasses type sauce is poured over the frying pan and mixed well...and voilĂ , your order of Sweet and sour "chicken" is ready to be brought to your table by your waiter.

...and you can thank the Governor for vetoing a bill last year that would have required all chains to list their calorie-counts on their menus.

Did you know that diet sodas are 50% more harm then regular soda? It was on a cable news piece. I say don't allow the gov't to start making choices for people on how to eat. If Jan Perry was in great shape and was a role model in the exercise, eating healthy stage maybe she would have room to talk. But plllleeeaaassseee she's one of the most out of shape clowncil members besides Mike Hernandez. Instead of going after fast food go after the greasy, unhealthy bacteria latent food being sold by illegal vendors.

It's my belief that people who take advantage of other people's stupidity are worse than the stupid people themselves. Being stupid is to be human. Or, I believe the actual phrase is, "to error is to be human". You get the point. But to take advantage of those who error? Not human, at least not beyond the age of 10, where most human beings learn that it's wrong and stop doing it. But the owners of fast food restaurants are another story. Why not combat their sinister agenda to essentially hook this country on fast food with some regulation? Who gets hurt, other than those who are doing wrong?

She's trying to drive out some if not all of the lower income neighborhood so she can turn it over to her campaign funders, er, the developers for gentrification. Deep down she's tired of fighting for the poor. In the end, the perks are as satisfying.
