Bill Boyarsky told the LA Press Club last night that not all of LA's Jews live in Brentwood, some elderly ones live in apartments in Pico Robertson, and that's why he doesn't support condo conversion. Is the LA Weekly still doing hard City news anymore? It's hard to tell these past two weeks; there have been no City Hall stories in the Weekly. There haven't been City Department stories, or City Council stories, or development stories; there hasn't been anything regarding City politics at all, in fact.
Last attempt, three weeks ago: the Brewer cover was a pure hatchet, flailing at low-hanging fruit, singling out the current Supe of the district for not solving problems that were created by others, who have since moved on.
And the "Nine Miles and Spreading" gang cover story a month ago, the one that was spiked at the NYTimes is similarly starting to look a bit...shall we say...stretched. That story made it sound like gangs were on the verge of taking over the City. Today comes the former fishwrap of record with this: "LA gang related killings plunge." The DN has it too. Yes, there appears to be lots of trouble of late at the Weekly with coming up with local news features that ring strongly true, or even stick for a while.

I for one applaud any improvement in homicides and gang crime and it looks to me like Tony V and Chief Bratton are starting to make a dent in the problem.
I also applaud the realistic philosophy of those in leadership and law enforcement who espouse the obviously more efficient attitude of "we can't arrest ourselves out of the problem".
Intervention and social programs for our youngsters run by professionals in our schools, churches, and even LE, who help many at risk kids with "PAL" type activity's "are" effective if supported by the public.
God knows that money spent on youngsters before they become criminals and gangsters is a lot cheaper and more humane than supporting a person incarcerated for years at tremendous cost to the taxpayer.
We now incarcerate close to 200,000 people in Calif. at a cost of billions so I for one applaud any change of direction and philosophy that our Mayor and Police Chief support as long as it shows effectiveness in saving lives and saving taxpayer's money.

Gang-related killings in Los Angeles declined dramatically in 2007 as the Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies waged an intensive campaign against some of the city's most violent street toughs, officials announced Thursday.
The dip in gang homicides was part of an overall reduction in serious crime in the city.
The LAPD recorded 216 gang-related deaths in 2007. Although that figure accounted for more than half of all homicides citywide, it was a 27% drop from the year before.
The decline was most pronounced in the Valley: Twenty-nine gang-related killings in 2007 represented a 40% drop from the number recorded in 2006.

He said he does not want to through his support behind Hillary or Obama for the time, because he wants Hil & Bo who both supported the border fence, to come out more and spread on the table their views on immigration. I thought it odd, that he made no reference whatsoever to Edwards. He went on further to say that he (bill) had been in constant talks with Hillary and Obama these past days. I think Edwards, Obama, and Hil would deeply consider Bill Richardson as a VP on their ticket.
PS. As predicted, Bank of America said earlier today it will buy Countrywide Financial for $4.1 billion in stock, rescuing the country's biggest mortgage lender and expanding the financial services empire of the nation's largest consumer bank. Pacheco faces DUI charges
City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo filed misdemeanor drunk-driving charges Thursday against ex-City Councilman Nick Pacheco, a former city prosecutor and onetime candidate for district attorney.
Pacheco, 43, was pulled over by police at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 1 while driving through the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles. He had been driving erratically on Santa Fe Avenue just north of 6th Street, according to Delgadillo spokesman Nick Velasquez.
A resident of Eagle Rock, Pacheco served on the council from 1999 to 2003. He lost his reelection bid to Antonio Villaraigosa, who became mayor two years later.
Arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 24. If convicted, Pacheco could face a $1,000 fine and as much as six months in jail.

As they should -- when every HOA or group of them shakes down a local developer and openly tries to circumvent the Council office (what the CityWatch article you links to boasts about as a huge Positive for HOA's -- that is pure anarchy and you could not come up with a better reason for why HOA's and NC's should NOT be given more power. Corruption in Africa is costing the continent nearly $150bn a year, according to a new report.
The African regional body, the African Union (AU) has drawn up a convention to stamp out malpractices which the study says are hitting the poorest the hardest.
Corruption is illegal everywhere in Africa, but everywhere it is woven deep into the fabric of every day life.
From the bottle of whisky slipped under the counter to speed a traveller's way through customs, to the presidents and ex-presidents living way beyond their declared means, it results in an assumption that no business will ever get done without a present changing hands.
The report before this week's meeting of the African Union in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, makes no attempt to excuse these "gratifications" as part of the culture.
It says that corruption is costing Africa more than $148bn dollars a year, increasing the cost of goods by as much as 20%, deterring investment and holding back development.
Most of the cost, it says, falls on the poor.
Common stance
The AU's proposed solution is a convention which would provide countries signing up to it with a blueprint for tackling the problem.
It proposes that all public officials should declare their assets when they take office, that governments should take powers to seize bank documents where necessary, and that those convicted should have their assets confiscated.
Signatories would also have to agree to extradite those charged with corruption.
The proposed convention reflects a growing awareness of the damage Africa's corrupt reputation has done.

Earlier today I was looking at my book on Tibetan Tantra (the dominant form of Buddhism in Central Asia). Sure enough "Ancient Wisdom" means FEMALE FORMLESS AWARENESS. That's the beauty of discovering what Tsung Tsai teaches, that all of reality is Number and Harmony -- that the answer to the question, "Why is Ohm?" or "Wisdom" is the source of 1:2:3:4 (yin-yang-emptiness) as formless awareness.

Yesterday I was talking to my buddy Don Quixote about his Chinese studies. I asked him how to pronounce "Tsung Tsai." As he explained the alternative routes to finding this out I then remembered it means "Ancient Wisdom." Tsung Tsai is the Ch'an Monk who returns to inner Mongolia in George Crane's amazing 2000 travel book: "The Bones of the Master."
Earlier today I was looking at my book on Tibetan Tantra (the dominant form of Buddhism in Central Asia). Sure enough "Ancient Wisdom" means FEMALE FORMLESS AWARENESS. That's the beauty of discovering what Tsung Tsai teaches, that all of reality is Number and Harmony -- that the answer to the question, "Why is Ohm?" or "Wisdom" is the source of 1:2:3:4 (yin-yang-emptiness) as formless awareness.

This job required us to deliver messages and packages on bicycles all around the downtown area, but it was not as it seemed, as I and a couple other camaradas, (all of us had done time together in YTS, and one of these vatos is a well known carnal,the other would have been but got religion just in time!), did special deliveries for these Dagos who I had known all my life. We delivered bets and money to various customers who did business with this book and also Heroin and Pills of various sorts to special customers. We got paid cash besides our "minimum wage check" that the other guys received. We camaradas had been tested over and over on the streets and in lockup and we knew no weakness was in any of us.
We used to eat at a Pastrami stand on 4th and Los Angeles St. all the time, and there was a middle aged, light skinned, Chanate who was a real happy, nice guy who always treated us right. Well one Friday Payday, as we were walking to the "Grand Central Market" for shrimp and fries, we see this big commotion at Third and Main St. and when we get closer we see this light skinned chanate we know getting mugged by this big black Mayate. Our friend was on the ground and holding onto this big fucking niggers leg and screaming, please don't take my check sir, please don't take my money!! And this big Chanate is just walking and dragging this guy down the sidewalk, every once in a while he would stop and give the poor old vato a "patada" in the face. It was pitiful and there were a hundred people around just watching. We were looking too but fuck it, one of vatos (who now has religion but was a vicious,heartless mother fucker in his day)says "This is fucked up,what do you guys think? We both say let's get that fucking nigger" and off we go accross the street, the big black mayate didn't see us coming and I picked up a newspaper rack on the street and I blindsided the dude in the head and he staggered back but didn't fall,I look to my crime partners and they both had knives out and were moving in on this Vato. I thought I was all Chingon in those days and I saw a lot of shit go down but I remember a the time thinking "fuck man there going to kill this mayate and we'll all get busted! Sure enough,both of them started shanking this vato and he starts screaming and falls against the bldg. and I can see in my camaradas eyes that not only are they going to stick him a hundred times, but they are looking at me like "come on vato pull your shit out and start sticking". The way we were raised I had no choice and I stuck him a couple of times in his ass before we heard the Juda coming and we took off running. Later we were reliving the scene and I was questioned about why I stuck this mayate in the ass instead of the heart.
That was the movida in play "show no sign of weakness or compassion"
Footnote: Later we heard from our friend (the old light skinned dude)that the mayate who we shanked lived but was busted for strongarm robbery and got ten years due to his extensive and brutal record of violent robberies. We never paid for another Pastrami, but this was an example of what "Mundo" refers to as a "learned abnormal social value system"
