The Free Market Works

Some people think that chain outlets like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Starbucks, etc. kill competition and harm small business. However, no less a left leaning blog than CurbedLA has found that Starbucks actually brings more business to competing independent coffeehouses by expanding the category while the upstarts manage to offer alternatives to corporate coffee.

There was a very similar experience in Glendale where competition from an innovative local store was one of the factors that lead to closing down a Home Depot.

Just as they once uprooted veteran retailers like Sears, K-Mart, Builders Emporium, etc. corporate behemoths like those mentioned above are potentially the dinosaurs of the near future when someone else figures out how to do it better.

Ergot - no need for the government to protect us from the likes of them.

And that, Jack Hoff, is the free market perspective.

Again the fat man only gives part of the story. It is not a free-market when large corporations can lobby government for large tax breaks. A small retailer does not get the same type of concession a large corporation does. Read you own recent posts about the AEG corporation; you are such a meat-head. The concept of a truly free-market is just a theory which rarely exists.

Do you think if I want to sell my soda at 7-eleven or Ralphs that Coca-Cola is going to stand still and give up the shelf space they have bought in the major retailers? You obviously know nothing about how products are actually purchased and displayed in a retail store. Or how land lease agreements are negotiated.

You are trying to compare a little ole Starbucks to behemoth Home Depot?
Starbucks sells coffee. Home Depot sells to contractors and in bulk. They also offer carpet installation, roofing, tiling, cabinet installation, tool rentals, the list goes on.
Restaurants tend to do better when
when there are other restaurants around them. The same is not true when Home Depot enters a town. I suggest you read "Big Box Swindle", and try again to justify your misguided position. See ya Sunday!

Mayor Sam-

I had been under the impression (possibly mistaken?) that Alice star Joe B. was opposed only to the Home Depot in Sunland Tujunga as presently proposed?

Is this not the case?

I know Jim Alger is part of a union funded anti big box "grass" roots campaign. Is Joe as well?

The 7-11 example was not a good one. that IS the free market... your shit goes on the shelves when you get big enough.

Lobbying on the other hand needs to end. That's absolutely not fair or free

Look who is talking, one side lobby is on war with other side lobby, let it be left or right both do the same. How do you think the government runs, on your taxes, bullshit, your taxes are not enough for governing officers to fill up their gas for travels.

These chains work for 24/7 and they charge the simple citizen for every single penny they spend to make big bucks. That is how it is and will be.

Neither the left or the right has the balls to mess up with the business houses, so lobby wont go, lobby will only restructure.

One government comes reduces the taxes and favors project to fill in the wallet of their friends, then another hopeful government friends get discontended and fight for those bucks. So the new government is here, taxes are doubled and back into action, money raised and is used for projects favored to satisfy new governmental friends.

End of the day, what?, the simple citizen is exploited no matter what. Being said that people know it and yet got out and get those old brats elected, get some youngsters out there, atleast the young will have a pleasing personality to look at.

At the end of the day let it be young or old, left or right or center, liberal or conservative the simple citizen is going to be exploited for sure. We know it, what are you fellas fighting about. Got get a life.

Mayor Sam, this blog has gotten so weird and off topic lately, it's difficult to find a cohesive string of arguments to relate to, but I do thank you for throwing down the gauntlet.

A good government (of the people, by the people, for the people, blah blah blah -- ) promotes healthy competition in a free market but also provides stop gap measures to preserve our freedom. We cannot just roll up a state or federal gov't in order to "roll the dice" on market forces dictating our future, nor can we simply abandon our courts and legal system in deference to a free market.

At one point in my life, I worked at the headquarters of a company that was under federal investigation for being a monopoly. The executives had no problem lying to the media (or telling me to lie to the media) while excessively raising fees on the consumer after they had taken out or bought out the competition in a given market.

The corporate world is filled with execs like these who have no moral compass and without some regulation, we would only have monopolies which lead to no free market whatsoever and a major compromise of the liberty we value.

Thanks for the response, 8:55.

Mayor Sam, 8:55 has requested that I ask you to "stop the idiots" on this blog and, well, frankly, I'm sure you'd agree that compiling a list that large would be a cumbersome task, but since, as they say, "the longest journey begins with but a single step," would you be so kind as to delete 8:55?

Thanks so much. Now I can go back to playing Warcraft.

Warcraft is a fav with the Nazi Lowriders in Huntington Beach. Disfunctional Lilly Honkies love it. As do all those people who take the renaissance fair too seriously. Look for Jack Hoff soon on a Wife Swap episode near you.
