The Other Alcalde
The Mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, is in town, and he popped in on Council this morning, addressing the Chamber as a celebrated guest. Introduced by Zacatecas-native Jose Huizar and presented pumpkin bread by Tom LaBonge, el Alcalde Ebrard, spoke in English of tourism and the strong relationship between the two pueblos. Huizar felt it necessary to mention that the City of Los Angeles was the world's largest Mexican city outside of Mexico City, and also that more Americans live in Mexico City than in any other City abroad. The word "immigration" was not used by any speaker all through the morning visit.
Maybe Ebrard, a great hope for lefty Mexican politics, will give some of his transit tips to our own Alcalde?
In conclusion of the visit to Chamber, Ebrard was presented by Huizar and LaBonge with a road sign that indicated the mileage between Mexico City and Los Angeles. Huizar noted that the sign pointed out "how far---how close---the two cities are" to each other. The sign will join other such signs at Olvera Street.

You would have expected that "Miles to" sign already up years ago unless this is a different set of signs at Olvera St. That's something that the Council can handle, along with their never-ending self-congratulatory speeches and announcements.
And by the way, regarding Olvera St. location, did the city remedy the status of a few years back where "someone's" oversight had failed to secure signed rental agreements with tenants for years?
I don't know if the City of L.A. was losing money because of this, but like most of the city's mistakes, a sizeable monetary cost is routinely involved (and not recovered).
I expect that, as with most snafus, all hands responsible usually are able to dodge accountability.
Another example was the city's issued cell phones and the billings that the L.A. Times story covered a time back. Huge bills and unknown whereabouts for many phones. And then you see still more taxes sought by the Council.
Why have CITY-PAID phones? Most people have phones, more now than before. This should be just a reimbursed expense connected to employees' documentation, like a mileage and parking expense. A lot of waste and outright fraud could be reduced. And that goes for things today, as well. Maybe the Mayor could get his "transparency in government" to work on those kinds of basic remedies for city abuse.

Don’t forget the rental agreement the Board of Referred Powers (five councilmembers) gave the Autry National Center in l986, a ONE dollar a year lease for 50 years. Ten acres of prime city land for one dollar a year. A private business uses public land for ONE DOLLAR A YEAR.
Pay attention to what the Mayor and Huizar are concocting with the Autry to pull the rug from under the taxpayers, just like the Board of Referred Powers did in l986..

Residents are pissed at Huizar because he thought of himself and not the people when he wanted the big event on the bridge to have xmas lights turned on. Yet, you go to many neighborhoods especially where senior citizens live in Boyle Heights and the damn lights have been off since the summer and the little shit Huizar hasn't done a damn thing to get it fixed. Huizar is as TJ as they come lacking class to be a true American.
