CNN Video: Jan Perry & LA City Council To Ban New Fast Food Restaurants
If one-third (1/3) of your constituents suffer from obesity -- the problem must be with those predatory fast-food restaurants that force people to eat their food, not with the people who are walking into (or pulling over and driving through) the restaurants. Those poor, helpless people who are at the mercy of these restaurants that are grabbing people off the street; restraining them; then forcing them to eat the food.

How about an education campaign with a programs running on City TV 35, billboard campaign, run a program on public access, do media interviews for TV, radio and newspapers, work with LAUSD on an education campaign, etc.

You know, after watching the video report again, I do admit, it's a shame that in a free market society, in that area, all you have is fast-food restaurants. That IS a lousy option. I know what happens to Big ZD when he eats too many McD or BK fish sandwiches...he becomes Bigger ZD! So I at least would like to say I commend Jan Perry on being concerned for the people who do not have any grocery stores in the area. (I don't care about sit down restaurants...just grocery stores.) Problem is, not a big fan of the moratorium idea. How come there are no grocery stores in the area? I'm not saying the big chains have to go in there...but not even Jon's or smaller store? What's up wit it? On the realest...how could it area be all fast-food and nothing else? How could the City help attract the right food establishments in the area? But the FIRST step is to make these people who live on this food CARE about why they shouldn't be eating too much of it. It will take social pressure to "out healthly each other" (pride) before they stop the junk food, anyway.

This is a serious problem. Just a couple weeks ago I was driving in south central and Ronald McDonald himself ran to my car with a gun in his hand. At first I thought he was carjacking me but it was much much worse. He was going to force me to buy his food and eat it. I was so ashamed of myself for not being able to protect myself from a clown I didn't press charges.
Another example of the neocon agenda to screw minorities. The rethugs will, and are doing everything they can to keep minorities poor and uneducated. The bushbots know an informed public would NEVER vote for a republikan, even as dogcatcher.
What would you do if:
Another country invaded your country based on lies.
if you were unemployed and meanwhile the foreigners who are occupying your country are making billions?
if you saw your family and friends being blown to hell?
if you didn't have running water and you only had electricity for a few hours a day?
if you had to wait in line for more than six hours to get gas?
if you walked out of your home and the smell of rotten corpses filled the air?
if at night you heard gun shots and bombs going off?
if you had to stop at checkpoints and be searched by foreign occupiers?
if the leader of those occupiers said that they aren't leaving until they're ready to leave?
does McDonald's sell beer?

It's pathetic that Perry doesn't just sponsor healthy cooking and food shopping classes. Immigrants from all over the world prepare tasty home meals on a budget, but these people can't cook and would starve if they didn't go to the fast food joints? Plus spend a fortune there.
I really fat black girl at my son's school and her mother always bring KFC to pot lucks. Sure, kids need their burgers and pizza once in a while, but this is a sad reflection of how lowly their black leaders think of them, too.
Most popular black food choices are fried, and chicken and waffles joints where the grease from the chicken and in the gravy is obvious. Sure the stuff is delicious but they're all fat.
They could be asking to have their chicken broiled and hold the grease and mayo, it's a lifestyle choice.
Olive Garden and other chains offer tasty meals that come to some 3000 calories with butter and sauce, the thing they need is to ALL put the calorie count on each meal. A big mac is less fatty than some of the chain sit-down meals.
With the city needing tax revenue, this is brilliant, Perry.

Jan Perry is the last person to be saying anything about fat food. She should get in shape first then preach. IF Perry is so concerned why the hell doesn't she have any chain markets in South LA? There's none, no Von's, RAlphs, Albertson etc. They cheap little stores that sell crap. Instead of going after McDonalds Perry should clean up all the illegal vendors who sell greasy, bacon wrapped hot dogs that sit in the sun for hours. But because they are cheap and there's no public health people guiding them people buy from these filthy carts and some get sick. Why isn't Jan Perry doing something about that? Jan Perry preaching about fast food is like Jabba the Hut doing it.

Perry should be pay more attention to the gangs in South LA then people's eating habits. Last I checked this was a free society and people have the right to choose. Perry herself needs to enroll in a fitness program and not look like a bag lady. You would think with all the money she makes she could afford to go to the hair salon, get a facial, buy nicer suits, learn how to put make up on, and all the women in council should definitely go to a stylish class. Compared to other cities we have the worst dressed men and women with no class representing us. Embarrassing!!!!
was watching a book club lecture on C-Span from New York City, with a bunch of people from New York...they were talking about the City of Los Angeles and all the types of problems with the city turning into a civic cesspool -- and they were talking about Villagrosa -- and as goes L.A. goes the rest of the country -- and it sounded like the same stuff you hear on all the local radio shows.
i was just listening in the background at first, and thought it was the same old discussion taking place in Los Angeles...so when I found out it was taking place in NYC...it confirmed a lot.

People should be able to choose the food they want to eat. If South LA doesn't have it they will just drive further away into other areas to get it. That will also take away needed jobs from this area. That's real smart.
People are allowed to smoke and that kills people too so why don't they leave people alone to choose what kind of food they want. People are not being forced to eat what is being offered and not choosing the healthier choices at these fast food restaurants.
I say freedom to choose is beautful. Tell Jan to close down the liquor stores instead. Is anything being done about that?

I've recently noticed that the Honorable Councilmember Jan Perry has lost a little weight. She's a little slimmer than she was four years ago. That said, she still looks like (by comparison) a walking cannonball - but she DOES have a valid excuse: anyone her age (and in her elected position), will gain weight if one's presence is required at various "sit-down" meetings.
Lest some wingnut among us think I'm an apologist for Madame Perry, I'm not. Her program, in my opinion, makes as much sense as participating in a PETA anti-fur rally during a blizzard.
If the Honorable Jan Perry were really concerned about the health and welfare of her constituents, she could use the discretionary funding available to her office to open a few centers designed to tout the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise. But noooo, banning fast-food outlets easier, and costs less.
What was it that a certain Democratic President said in his inaugural speech? "We choose to do things not because they are easy, but because... they are hard." (John F. Kennedy). She would do well to heed this message of almost half a century ago.
If Jan Perry were smart (hah, a councilperson smart, hah) she'd work with the fast food chains and start a collective organization in So L.A. to collect all the frying oil, strain it for puritys, etc, then get grant funding or corporated sponsorship (enterprise, avis, mercedes or vw) to buy old Deisel cars. These would be cheap vehicles and free fuel for her constuents, plus they'd be helping the environment. But nooooo, she has to be the food police. too sordid to believe.

(WUP!)," and it occurred to me that you could also form another police force: the BAFFOON police (Ban All Fast FOOd Now), with two councilmembers and their districts as its main focus: Jan Perry's and Tom LeBonge's.

What will it take for us voters to push through a city law requiring our city council members to attend mandatory exercise classes? That would be one way to cut out the excess fat in city government!

Pass a law for exercise classes for council members this group of bafoons don't even attend and sit in their seats the 3 council meetings in chambers. they have no respect for the public and the public doesn't respect them. I don't see the respect like council members use to get with this sad ass group. Constituents treat them like Regular Joe's. What we need is demand these assholes sit in their seats for the 3 weekly meetings they have. This group of morons in particular are never in their seats for meetings. This is by far the worst city council group this city has seen in decades.
I'll bet if you follow Jan at lunch, within a week or two, she'll be slammin a couple big macs down. Someone that big is trying to stop the businesses rather than her taking self control and keepin her yap trap shut. Anywho, most joints are switching to zero trans fat oils, so half her battle is already done.
A major part of the reason we only have fast food in South LA-
Start with Janice Hahn and her wage ordinances and what CM have done to grocery stores among other things.
Yes, I agree we have to figure out ways of proper wage, health care etc. We do NOTHING to incentivize businesses in this city.
The way we tax, fee, constraint and NIMBY businesses in this city, there is no carrot and stick to incentivize. To businesses from this city stick is understated it's all baseball bat over the head of businesses all the time.
Even the complaint about the liquor in South LA is a farce. These owners have a right to make a living and may not know what to do otherwise. So when a resource to mentor these owners on how to help change their method of business (in their languages) was offered directly to Community Coalition and Karen Bass, numerous calls were unreturned. I went directly to Gail Goldberg and was snubbed.
An upcoming President of a small grocery association had a similar problem at his store. He added a small deli counter with fresh foods. Including salads, fruits, sandwiches with healthy ingredients. All much less expensive than a Subway or Quiznos.
He now makes much more money off this cost effective change and no longer has the loitering, drinking and narcotics issues. The community is safer too. While he does still sell liquor and would be foolish to let the license go, his liquor sales dropped considerably as his clientel changed.
He was willing to mentor others. However, as a small business owner in order to ehlp do that in a time efficient manner it will take the support of the "enablers" above.
Until Jan, Janice and the others stop doing what they do verbally and think about the cause and effect of their actions, nothing will change. It will continue to get worse.
