Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

Politicians want Neighborhood Councils to spend money on security cameras; Walter Moore has the story of how Mayor Villaraigosa wants to spend $17,000 per camera to be loaded into police cars.

Could the City of Santa Clarita's opposition to the Las Lomas project be based on the City's desire to annex the area for local developers before the City of Los Angeles does?

There's a budget crisis yet the city is taking in more money than ever. Check out Walter Moore's latest blog.

The City does not have enough funds to buy security cameras or other things we need but we have enough for Tom LeBong's ego parade called the Hollywood Santa Parade. However they've picked a cool dude, tv host Bob Barker, to be the grand marshall.

If you need a free Thanksgiving dinner, the County of Los Angeles has one for you.

Broadway Downtown has been a bustling center of Hispanic culture for decades. Now Councilman Jose Huizar wants to gentrify the place into a west coast version of its New York namesake. That's great if the property and business owners there buy into the idea; but no city funds should be spent on it.

Beware for what you ask. It is a good idea to have security cameras to catch vandals, but that will give “big brother” a way to watch us. “Big brother” controls a lot of our actions; each day they know more and more about us, we cannot give them full control. Think about it.

Excuse me but why is the city (i.e, Tom LaBonge) honoring Bob Barker with the Grand Marshall title at the Hollywood Christmas Parade (oh, nothing secular about that now) when he put up money to oppose the City of Los Angeles' retention of Ruby the elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo. Sort of a double standard if you ask me.

Huizar a namby-pamby, lacks the courage to be a true leader. What did he do of worth in LAUSD?

Excellent posts on that CurbedLA link about Las Lomas. Perhaps I'll have to go over there where there are like minds and zero racist comments that I saw.

Why, I would venture to say that those posters have more than a high school education... Unlike us fat, uneducated, elderly posters here.

Santa Clarita doesn't want the density there. L.A. wants the revenue.

Greig Smith will never let this disaster happen. In fact, I would bet, he will run again just to stop it. He's committed to stopping Palmer. This I know..

Why do the cameras cost 17 thousand dollars each?

11:50 P.M.

Take the time to read about Ruby the Elephant and her tragic past as a circus elephant, followed by total mishandling at the LA Zoo, where she really wasn't wanted because she wass the "wrong" kind of elephant.

Then take the time to read about her at P.A.W.S. in Northern California and the glorious life she leads there.

Bob Barker is a hero, no, let me re-phrase: BOB BARKER IS A HERO for helping that to happen.

And you will agree, once you see how wonderful this whole scenario played out.

Moron city council members approved and paid the event waiver for giving Victoria Secret lame ass women a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.

You gotta read David Z piece on council raise.
L.A.'s elected officials differ on getting raises...The pay hike, their fourth since 2005, was turned down by six and accepted by eight of the 18 officeholders. The four who did not comment will receive it automatically if they don't reject it.

Hey 11:50, you dufous, Barker didn't put up money to "oppose...retention of Ruby...at the Los Angeles Zoo." He offered money to pay for her upkeep if the City decided to move her to the sanctuary, and when it did he kept his promise. But he didn't twist anyone's arm or threaten anyone, unlike the mental giants we see posting here.

Huizar and Broadway === Developers. Jose doesn't give a shit about people but money from the deveoplers. YOu think the developers want to see the mess on Broadway and invest? Hell no.

Gee, anyone else see a conflic of interest here? You would think Antonio would have learned when he started sleeping with Mirthala. What happened to Mirthala??

....Jazmin Ortega, who covered City Hall and politics for La Opinión, resigned to become press secretary and Spanish-language media coordinator in the mayor's office. She also will "serve as a key strategic advisor," said the release. Her start date is December 11.

Kim this blog is good because it has multiple opinions. A lot of it stupid but there is no lock step like you get at blogs like Curbed or LAVoice. Its better for you to argue here with NIMBYs and politicians than to be sending dittos elsewhere.

This Las Lomas thing is really getting stupid. As a hard nosed Libertarian I'm pretty adamant on private property rightts. But as a businessperson you also have to look at what makes sense.

Looking at the map of the thing it seems silly to try and squeeze that many homes into a hillside. On the other hand the project isn't profitable with just a 100 homes I would suspect. So maybe they can split the difference.

The underground Metro Link station makes no sense either. I don't see why it can't be done above ground.

I'm guessing Smith doesn't have a relationship with this developer. Who are the developer's rivals? Have they donated to Smith? There is always subtext, what is it?

More importantly, and irrespective of this project, something has to be done about that corridor. I think the following would help:

1) Santa Clarita needs to restrict its development and stop growing until it has a sustainable job base.
2) There should be a toll on the 5 on the during rush hour southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening. That would force some people to car pool, use Metrolink, etc. and the funds could be used for improvements.
3) There should be a major enhancement on the 5/405 coming out of the Newhall Pass. That would include:
a) Double decking the 5 starting in Santa Clarita through the pass to Sylmar. This would be like the Harbor Fwy for bus and HOV only.
b) Building light rail from the SCV Metrolink station, down the 405 to LAX.
c) Extending the Metro Red Line from North Hollywood to the Sylmar Metrolink Station
d) Finding an alternate corridor for truck traffic, maybe eventually something like the Alameda Corridor and get more of the freight on rail too.

Now this entails a hefty price tag and years of work. However anyone of the items would help.

No one is going to shut off illegal immigration and people moving here from other states so we're just going to grow and grow and grow. So the priority (amongst changing laws to make it easier for business to come here and be located close to where people work) is to invest in smart transportation improvements.

BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT. DON'T GO SEE THIS FILM. SEND A MESSAGE TO HOLLYWOOD THAT WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS.'Redacted' To Confront Protests

\...Director Brian De Palma's latest film Redacted is scheduled to open tomorrow (Friday) in limited release as theater owners brace for possible protests. The film, inspired by the case of the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl by U.S. soldiers, has been condemned by Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly, who called on his audience to bring signs to theaters reading "Support Our Troops" and predicted that the movie "will incite anti-American hatred around the world." He also called the film's executive producer, Mark Cuban, an "anti-American" and encouraged fans of the Dallas Mavericks, which Cuban owns, to protest against the film at the team's games. O'Reilly described De Palma as "a true villain in our country."

Double Decking the %? jeesh, the frwy at 5 and 14 junction fell apart twice,in the 71 and 94 earthquake. Not a stable place todouble deck,it would never fly by anyone who knows the history. Plus by the time that were to be completed, we'll beready for our next 6.0. Also the underground Metrolink , I agree is absurd, too much $ will be spent drilling and building for little net effect. Theres a thing called too much technology. Lets keep it simple, it happnes to work better and its cheaper.

Also, changing the name of that lame parade won't help it, it's sucked since the sixties. Proping up the last pol on an old Buickis a sad excuse for exposure.

I don't need a free Thanksgiving dinner but I'm lazy and I'd like someone to deliver one to my house.

Going to a restaurant is boring and expensive, and you eat too much to justify the expense.

Then you feel stuffed as a turkey for days and that fat feeling takes you into the holidays with a bad start.

I'd go volunteer at a homeless shelter and get one of their free dinners, but I prefer Wolfgang Puck's stuffing at Spago and anyway, poor people depress me.

Isn't the Santa Parade right after Thanksgiving this year? Will they give everyone a free turkey dinner to get them to wave at Bob Barker?

What about bringing Stephanie Edwards back, too? Wasn't it awful how they made her stand outside in the rain during the last parade while the younger and pretty chicks got to be inside nice and dry, with the old guy geezers?

It's almost enough to make me show up at one of Huizar's parades, just to tell him to hire her as co-Grand Marshall at all his parades, which he holds more than a dictator of a banana republic.

I'll bet she'd go, too, as long as they wouldn't make her stand out in the rain.

She might even work for a turkey dinner, but some churros to go with it would be nice.

What do Mexicans add to spice up their turkey dinners? Chiles and refried beans? What do they do to the potatoes, and do they put chorizo in their stuffing?

I'd settle for one of those dinners delivered to my house.

Thank you for the camera info. So, now that we know these cameras should be around 10 thousand less, I'd like to know why the city thinks the cameras cost 10 thousand more.

What a joke--gentify Broadway but don't use city funds! Who is kidding who? For years our City leaders have paid for closing downtown streets for Fiesta Broadway, Cinco de Mayo and Mexican independence Day. They spend thousands on security, road closures, officers for street detours, set up, crowd control and likely a few hundred thousand just for cleaning up the mess that's left on the street after the "festivities." They call it a "community event." So if you think that Huizar won't get the money to clean up Broadway out of the City treasury, think again. Our priorities are really FUBAR'd and too too p.c.

You're right, it's always the Latinos and blacks who have all these events and festivals at city expense. Huizar and Janice Hahn (who thinks she's black, tries to buy their votes with this stuff) are the biggest wasters of taxpayer subsidies and as you say, costs of cleanup and cops are extra, not even factored into the "fee waived" part. That's where the city should have been looking first for cuts.

There are no more Columbus Day parade, because that was vetoed as "racist" by the Latinos, who say some Italian guy "discovering" America is an insult to them. This is something in every other city, but we're stuck with Mexican historical events, one after the other instead.

There's nothing else "American" that everyone can get behind. They are de facto annexing L A as what Alarcon calls "the Capitol of Latinismo," of the Latin world.

Do you notice he never, ever mentions or thinks about any "anglo" cities or history by comparison? Although he's probably one of those in New Orleans, enjoying the food and luxury trip there. That's another city run by a corrupt ethnic/ black machine, he must feel at home there.
