Leave LA?: Bloggin' Iowa
It occurs to me if I am considering leaving Los Angeles and moving to Iowa besides the cost of living, housing, crime and weather, another thing I should look at it is the blogging scene.Now if I were to move to Iowa I could theoretically keep blogging here at Mayor Sam. I really don't have to physically be in LA to do it. Or I could take up national politics at the more or less defunct Sam Yorty's America.
But if I were to start the "Mayor Sam of Iowa," I better check out the native blogosphere.
Interestingly - as much as you people like to imply that Iowa or the mid-west is some kind of racist backwater full of knuckle dragging Republicans - most of the Iowa blogs I've found are left leaning. Rest assured for you liberal dummies out there, Iowa is relatively "progressive." The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, most of the statewide officers and most of the Congressional delegation are all Democrats. Both houses of the Iowa legislature are controlled by the Blue Party. And of course one of the most liberal US Senators - Democrat Tom Harkin - hails from Iowa.
And its a great time for blogs in Iowa with contested Democratic and Republic presidential races right around the corner at the all important Iowa Caucuses.
Blog for Iowa reads like something right out of West LA or Studio City- pro-abortion, anti-war and anti-Wal-Mart. The site links to lots of favorite lefty causes and tools for the active mid-western liberal. Someone named Dr. Alta Price apparently pays to keep the blog's lights on at $15 a month.
Another lefty blog is Century of the Common Iowan. They like to make fun of Repubicans the same way like to make fun of dumbass local elected officials. Fair enough.
There are conservative blogs in Iowa and one of the more interesting sites is Krusty Konservative. Similar to the Tall Glass of Milk's "______ This" (herself an Iowa native) headlines or Red Spot's trademark all caps oddball names for various notables, this blogger has a hook too. Any word that starts with a C is spelled with a K.
Local politics in my mom's hometown of Clinton (where my grandfather served for several years as a City Councilman) get coverage in The Cman Blog. They too are fighting feel good tax increases promoted by local pols. And this blogger is doing something to step up - Connor Anderson is running for the Clinton City Council.
Besides politics, arts and culture gets coverage in the Iowa blogosphere and two of the blogs I saw - Juice Blog and Gussied Up - easily look like they could be based in Los Feliz or Silverlake or Santa Monica.

Illegal immigration got you down, Mayor Sam? Me too. But they'll eventually be following you to Iowa, so moving is only a stopgap measure.

They've got to pay the blacks and poor uneducated whites more than they used to for the Hispanics. So the employers are bitching to the Bush administration. Meanwhile, some of them are actually going north to Canada. Just five hundred or so to Windsor in a month, but enough to flip out the Mayor there. "They're even having babies here now!" he cried. If enough Mexicans go to Canada, with its free healthcare and liberalism and all, their government will force America to do something about immigration.
They're half as likely to grant them refugee status as the U S is, by the way, even when they apply. They're economic refugees only.

You don't get it. They're not Dems because they believe in Dem Social Issues, ie. illegal immigrantion, gays, (maybe they do want socialize medicine, though, since they can't afford it themselves). They're Dems because they're BLUE COLLAR. They have pigs, for food, kept in their bathtubs. They watch sitcoms on TV. They buy lottery tickets. They don't like business sticking it to them. They eat corn-bread. They fart, all the time. Do you really believe that they read blogs?
Those blogs, that you mentioned, probably have readership of 3. They're writen by retired schoolteachers, biologist with master degrees, and college students. These people haven't a clue about the real world, as we all know.

Well, there's Leisure Village, sometimes called Seisure Village, in Orange County.
i think you guys are missing the point. if mayor sam moved to iowa, the point is to still blog about LA...but from a much more liveable area. mayor sam has created THIS blog about LA...he has all the knowledge of historical perspective, contacts, info, etc...and luckily technology has made it so he could easily continue. they don't have political extremists and gangsters running Iowa, like they do in Los Angeles, so it's not like iowa needs a blog about mayoral criminal activity.
Sad to say, I DO see the difference in the LA region over the past few years.
When I first discovered Agoura Hills (my fave location in Southern Cali), there wasn't even a stop sign at my favorite intersection. Then the stop sign went up. Then the red light. Then the USA gas station, then the restaurants, then more lights, then more exit ramps...and now it takes about 15 minutes to travel about 500-1000 feet. I know agoura hills isn't Los angeles city...but it's indicitive of the problem...
What a lame post. Write about L.A. or take the whole site down. No one cares about your pining to live elsewhere, dum-dum. If you want to go there, go there. But don't waste our day on this crap. Get back to Villalcalde.
Blogin' Iowa. "Blogin' Iowa". That's really good. I couldn't stop laughing. Really, laughing out loud. Just listen to how it sounds. Say it out loud, three or four times. Blogin Iowa. Now, ponder it's meaning. You're a funny guy.
I'm sure there is something quite important to blog about in Iowa. The most popular radio stations are the farm reports, there. Something quite exciting about millibars. Let's compare (ignoring juristictional stuff), Blogin' Seattle... Blogin' Fresno... Blogin' Frisco... Blogin' Iowa.
It's interesting that you so called liberals, lovers of diversity, tolerance, etc. would blog away such bigoted remarks about the people of Iowa. If I got on here on called someone named Hernandez a "taco eater" (which you would never see me do) you would all go nuckin futs. If a tv reporter or a white Republican elected official or a business leader made that type of remark you would call for their head.
YET - you get on here and demean some very decent people. People that whom A LOT of them agree with you more than I do on the welfare state, environmental goofiness, raising taxes, socialized
medicine and all kinds of other assorted liberal nonsense. Yet you talk about them eating corn, farting, whatever, not being able to read blogs, etc.
To be honest with you, I found the folks in Iowa to be more far more intellectual, politcally astute and to have well formed opinions as compared to the general knee jerk, vapid, self obsessed angelenos I deal with everyday. And the Iowans I refer to DO include LIBERALS - PROGRESSIVES - whatever you want to call them.
Sure, there are some towns and I visited at least one where they are very rural, very conservative, poor, etc. I've seen that however in California as well. Have you ever been to Hanford, Turlock, Selma, Del Norte County, etc.? I have. The cities in Iowa are really no differnt than cities anywhere else.
So when you say you love DIVERSITY, you are so TOLERANT, etc., etc., etc. YOU LIE.
I didn't hear any farm reports on the radio. I did hear Kayne West and Fergie though.

Mayor Sam, although I don't recall ever identifying myself as a liberal (I'm not), thank you. I'm a lot more moderate than many realize.
I want the same thing for my family as everybody else does: love, security, happiness and as few bumps in the road as possible.
I'm hoping this blog will soon elevate its conversation level a bit by getting over the anti-Mexican, here's-what-John-and-Ken-just-said, and where's Mirthala? threads and start thinking ahead about how redistricting could affect L.A. (I'm for it), $83/barrel oil prices in Los Angeles (hurrah! the price of alternative energy just went down!), etc. There is plenty to discuss, but those opportunities have become few and far between as of late.
As for this particular thread, Iowa is beautiful. Good, decent people -- okay, public drunkeness IS a problem -- but good, decent and caring people nonetheless with open land and a feeling of space over your head.
People who leave L.A. are never missed, but somehow, people who leave Iowa are. To me, that's the telling difference.

You got it right. Those dems in Iowa are the same as the dems in most of PA--socially conservative, but economically liberal.
They're the people who keep electing Tom Harkin in Iowa, and Arlen Specter, and the Casey family in PA.
They are blue collar people who love guns, but hate globalization.
They're the reason some republicans are now ranting against chinese trade & currency policies, and that democrats barely raised gun control as an issue after the VA Tech massacre.

Zuma Dogg, I know what you mean about Agoura Hills. 15-20 years ago it was almost pristine. A beautiful place, and still is to a certain extent. But at the rate we're going, "greater LA" is going to consist of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties all fused together. Not an enticing idea.
