Sunland-Tujunga Tea Party! And You're Invited!

On July the 4th, The No Home Depot Campaign will once again march in our community's parade to demonstrate the vast and diverse support we have on preventing Home Depot from opening in Sunland-Tujunga.
We think that the 4th of July is a perfect holiday for a community to come together and defend itself against an unwanted invader. We are demonstrating our determination to be in control of our town's future, to protect the quality of life for our residents, and our united effort to expel a corporation that has shown no concern for our community, and has even gone as far as to slander us, simply to advance their own business interests!

Will Home Depot's astroturf groups, stopracismca.com and F.I.R.S.T. (Friends Interested in Restoring Sunland-Tujunga, @ friendsofst.com) be joining us for this traditional community event?
Don't hold your breath!

Happy 4th everyone! See you at the Parade!

Volunteerism is embraced collectively and individually. Whether it’s building a playground for children, repairing homes for the elderly, helping inner-city teens learn job skills, educating customers about energy usage or shoring up an over-flowing river, making a difference helps Home Depot remain true to its progressive corporate culture.

The Home Depot strives to be the employer, retailer, investment, and neighbor of choice in the home improvement industry. Corporate governance is part of our culture and is founded on our daily commitment to living values and principles that recognize our ethical obligations to our shareholders, associates (employees), customers, suppliers, and the communities in which we operate. We understand our responsibility to behave ethically, to understand the impact we have on people and communities and to fairly consider the interests of a broad base of constituencies.

Aligning with this mission is the Company's longstanding commitment to strong corporate governance practices. During 1999, the Company adopted recommendations of the SEC-sponsored Blue Ribbon Committee. Since that time, the Company has continued its commitment to strong corporate governance by implementing practices that strengthen its compliance procedures and improve its financial reporting processes. During 2002 and 2003, the Company built upon its strong corporate governance foundation by implementing a number of new significant procedures, including:

* A Disclosure Committee tasked with ensuring that the Company's disclosures to its stockholders and the investment community are accurate and complete;

* A Corporate Compliance Council to regularly review the Company's compliance policies and monitor its compliance performance;

* A Policy and detailed procedures for the retention of the Company's independent auditors; and

* New independence standards for Board members, which meet or exceed the standards proposed by the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2006, the Board of Directors amended the Company's bylaws to adopt a majority vote standard for the election of directors, beginning with the next election in May 2007. The majority vote standard requires each director to receive a majority of the votes cast with respect to that director. Previously, directors were elected under a plurality vote standard, which meant that the candidates receiving the most votes would win without regard to whether those votes constituted a majority of the shares cast at the meeting.

The Company's Board of Directors is dedicated to continuing the Company's leadership position in matters of corporate governance and to maintaining an active role in the business. In addition to attending Board and Committee meetings, the members of the Board regularly visit stores and engage in the operational review of stores throughout the year. A substantial majority of the Directors on the Board are independent and each Director serving on the Audit, Leadership Development and Compensation, and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees is independent. Through its existing procedures and with the guidance of an informed, engaged, and independent Board, the Company has the structure and tools in place to continue to execute on its commitment to strong corporate governance.

We are a small, hardcore group of grassroots activists who are dedicated to doing more than simply talking about the problem or writing letters in respect to illegal immigration. We take a very aggressive, in-your-face stance on the illegal immigration issue. Obviously, if I could be king for a day, it would be to shut the borders and deport all the illegal aliens. But our group, since we’re a small group and we’re less than a year old, is designed to create little victories and create positive momentum as we grow to accomplish larger objectives. I’m not looking to take on the world right now, but to mobilize people and get them active.

At Save Our State, we’re very anti-Home Depot. It’s a corporate giant that many people in our opposition don’t like, either – they’re non-union, they’re a corporate behemoth and so forth. We might obviously oppose them for different reasons, but a lot of these things are, I think, a little unsettling for our opposition.

The Walton foundation also gave 8 million.

Budwiser gave 1 million and some water

Physer gave 2 milion in med

Kelogges gave 7 truckloads of cookies

Coke & Pepsi gave a million each

So you Wal-mart haters tell me again how bad they are and dont care about people and how they take advantage of its workers and susuppliers.

Despite the budding movement to develop alternatives for the site, neighborhood organizers have received scant support from the city council. J, Acouncil member who represents the area, argues that the stri p mall has been a sore spot for 25 years and that Home Depot is a viable solution.

Jim Alger created a plan whereby he would tell Neighborhood Councils to buy equipment from Do-It-Center if a % of the profits went to No 2 Home Depot. If any money was left over, it would go to the Congress of Neighborhood Councils.

Proof is on this video about 11 minutes in.

This has implications for the Congress of Neighborhood Councils, No 2 Home Depot, Jim Alger, and Joe Barett. Something is really wrong with this picture and the City should launch an investigation.

Mayor Sam or Zuma Dogg, why don't you feature this video and the controversy on a new thread?

The people in Sunland/Tujunga would much rather have a Target, a K-Mart, or a Kohl's store instead of a Home Depot; a general merchandise store is needed in the S/T area MUCH more than a Home Depot. There already is a Home Depot 8 minutes away in Sylmar, but the closest general merchandise store with a large selection of goods is probably 20 minutes away at the Target store in the Westfield Plaza in Eagle Rock. Approximately 8 of those blogs were written by Home Depot Exec's still trying to put a spin and justify the lies they spred about Sunland-Tujunga.

Their "for profit community service" is a joke! They are just great tax deductions for their sleazy corporation. Their quality and service remain poor and everyone knows how Home Depot lies and cheats. Long live Lowes, Do-it-Center, Ace Hardware stores and all other stores that are Home Depot's competitors.

I hope Home Depot goes the way of Napoleon and the Roman empire. It''s a long fall that is a short way off!

Home Depot is wanted by the majority of S&T and a very few but loud % of residents do not want Home Depot in Sunland. this blog is written by Joe. B. a self appointed leader of the n2hd and a paid spokesman for some local bussiness in town.

I think Joe was standing up for his group

By cussing at people and threatening them?

from what I understand, the guy that wrote this got harassed by HD to make them (the NHDC) not carry their banners or wear their NO Home Depot t-shirts

No. Joe B. decieved Mr. Lucas, the organizer of the parade, and broke their previous agreement.

He got a million phone calls from the supporters of No Home Depot, and basically had to eat crow.

No. Mr. Lucas got a few calls after Joe B. sent out an angry and spiteful e-mail blast asking people to harass him. Abby Diamond actually resolved the whole issue before anyone called Mr. Lucas. Maybe because she didn't cuss and threaten people like hot-head Joe B.?

Read the whole story here

Joe B. is a disgrace to No 2 Home Depot and the entire community of Sunland-Tujunga. He is responsible for the Do-It-Center scandal that caused Jim Alger to be banned from the Neighborhood Council system, he harassed and alienated Miner to the point where he shut down the old Foothills Forum, and he's now cussing at fellow community leaders and threatening them. Joe B. has less class than anyone at Home Depot, Dakota Communications, or Latham & Watkins.
