Saturday Soapbox: Officer Needs Assistance?

Consider this your soapbox du jour, and post what YOU deem the best stories.

You might want to deal with Bratton's new karaoke rendition of "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" Apparently someone's making noise about not re-appointing him. Me, I wouldn't re-appoint him, but I'd reached that conclusion before May 1. He's done some terrific things -- e.g., having police work at night, when criminals do -- but I think they're outweighed by what I consider excessive travel and his seeming contempt for people who want LAPD to cooperate with ICE rather than aid and abet violations of federal immigration law.

Hey, here's another thought for you -- admittedly pre-coffee and therefore suspect. If we had a dog beach in L.A., per my platform, think of how we'd help the environment by reducing the flow of SUV's full of dogs going down to Huntington Beach on weekends. Speaking of which, if you don't already have a dog or cat, go adopt one at the shelter, would you? I promise you won't be sorry. They know you're saving them, and they'll be your loyal friend for life. What's not to love about that?

Okay, blog away, and thanks again for caring enough about the city to pay attention to how it's run. You get a gold star for that.

Walter, first of all Special Issue 40 IS THE LAW. If the lawsuit filed by Judical Watch wins then LAPD won't have a choice so you can't blame that one on Bratton. Secondly, read these letters that a few that have been printed. There have been tons in support of officers from other papers.

Investigate first
Re "LAPD demotes a top cop" (May 8): The mayor said Chief Bratton acted decisively to send a message to the city and to all Los Angeles Police Department officers. Perhaps it's time we send a message to the mayor. He was elected to be mayor of all the people of Los Angeles. That includes all ethnic groups, and that includes the police officers. He acts like his only responsibility is to "la raza." Most people at the rally acted responsibly. However, video shows the few who blatantly disobeyed, became violent and purposely egged on the police. Do your investigation, but know that the citizens of Los Angeles want to be protected from those who flout our laws and endanger us all. And we will support our police for the good work they do every day of the year.

And we pay
Organizers of the May 1 march must be thinking, "We love it when a plan comes together." First, organize a march and pepper the crowd with people bent on inciting the police with rocks, bottles, verbal abuse and lack of respect. Then, make sure you have plenty of cameras to document an out-of-context portrayal that supports your slanted perspective of the event. Now you're ready to sue and encourage others to do the same. The city will, of course, apologize and settle for a couple million because that would be the politically correct thing to do. God forbid we hurt the feelings of people who are here illegally and their supporters. And once again the L.A. taxpayer loses. So what's new? - Robert West, Northridge

How convenient
Re "LAPD demote a top cop" (May 8): There were obviously abundant videotapes of the incidents, and I have not seen that those tapes were used to arrest the rock throwers. There seems to be a not-so-hidden agenda.
Also, isn't it convenient that our mayor was out of the country when this previously known demonstration was going to happen? Maybe he didn't want to face the problem upfront.

What's that say?
It seems like at least 90 percent of the letters to the opinion page have been in support of the Los Angeles Police Department over the situation on May 1. That should tell the mayor, police chief and every other critic something.

Special ORDER 40 is not law, but is merely policy, a directive to the police, originally issued by Chief Gates in 1978. If I become Mayor, I will revoke that order from the podium right after I'm sworn in.

But assume for the sake of argument that City Council passed an ordinance making it law. It would still constitute aiding and abetting violations of federal immigration law. So I'm not sure I get your point.

Second, I'm glad to see the public has not turned against the police, the way the Mayor and Chief seemed to have done. Individual officers MAY HAVE acted inappropriately, but it's unfair to conclude they did before we even hear their side of the story.

Thank you, Tamar, it gives me great pleasure to announce that after interviewing hundreds of candidates in a city of four million, I have finally found the right person for the $115,000 a year Commissioner's position on the Board of Public Works.

Please join me in welcoming Ernesto Cardenas!

It's great to have a family member like my brother on this board to help me make all the crucial non-decisions for my district.

Walter, you bring up an important point. How did Gates get away with not enforcing Special Issue 40 if it is aiding criminals breaking the law? If so then where is ICE in this and why aren't they going after the illegals? No doubt when they march they show the entire nation just how many of them are in this city and country illegally.

Video Shows Different View of "MacArthur Park Melee"
Story The link below will allow you to see a PRO illegal immigrant blogger's own video, with PRO police commentary added that provides a different perspective on the MacArthur Park "melee." Take special note of the ease with which the dispersal order was understood by the crowd and how one of those "shot" with a rubber bullet brags in Spanish about how much damage was inflicted on the police.
