Olympic Dreams Dashed

Los Angeles isn't going to get the 2016 Olympic games (as some had predicted). Not a whole lot of handwringing, but interesting nonetheless to take a look at some of the thoughts on the matter in the local media and blog-LA-sphere:

The Westside White Guy figures out a way to tie the issue into his favorite topic.

LAist is mostly gracious about it.

The Daily News has no issue with it and makes one point very clear: LA isn't jazzed enough of a city to warrant a third trip around the Coliseum. This is a good point. You can even see more spirit in the Chicago logo versus LA's.

And here is something the local citizens of Chicago should think about courtesy of a Windy City blog.

Of course we lost the bid.

All one has to do is look at who the chair of the committee was.

Barry Sanders is the same guy, who when head of the Philharmonic, sent a letter to all the big donors that the cost of their valet parking was going up $500.00 a night in donations, or they were going to lose the privileges they had donated big money for earlier.

He pissed everyone off, and it is probable that he did the same thing to the USOC.

Nobody loves a pompous little dick wearing a bow tie telling them what to do or how to do it, least of all the USOC.

Choosig between Chicago and LA was akin to choosing between leprosy and cancer. The big difference is that Chicago has a WHITE mayor.

The 5M illegals in CA couldn't care less about the illegals, and there aren't enough AMERICANS left in LA to qualify for patriotism.

And besides, who wanted to see a mass of Mexican flags flying all over LA???? Don't ever forget...LA IS MEXICO! It was a vote against Mexico holding the Olympics!

Speaking of "dashed dreams", someone mentioned the Sylmar Children's Museum. (Supposed to have built an new one.)

What's the story behind it? I heard it was never completed? So where did all the money go? Did they not have enough money. Sounds like something ZD would like to know more about?

What's up with it, dough?

I agree with the logo comment.

rotfl

theirs looks like an Olympic torch of hope and happiness, and LA's looks like a couple of leaves of pot.

with a city full of dispensaries, couldn't they at least put some sticky bud on the logo.

boy, this Mayor's ambitions get loftier by the minute: first he was a KTLA helicopter reporter, then he's a free speech expert at Venice, a trade ambassador to the Chinese, then he's taking over LAUSD, hogging the Airbus A380, and he wanted the Olympics.

what next: take over the world???

mwhahahahahaha

Dowd, our mayor is suffering from a combination of "Little Man Syndrome" (similar to "Napoleonic Syndrome"), and "Walter Mitty Syndrome." Those who suffer from this combination fantasize they're not only rocket scientists, but can do anything at anytime for any reason (including taking credit for someone else's ideas) as long as these things build up their public image.

In my day, our current mayor would have been diagnosed as "delusional," and be locked up in the nearest mental ward!

Damn, he must think he's the Mayor!!! Imagine that.

Hell, Antonio ought ot know that ZD is really the Man and has more influence in his little finger than that poseur Villaraigosa.

What has he done, besides being Speaker of the Assembly, Councilman and Mayor?

Doesn't he know it's all a dream and Matt Dowd and Dave Elliott really run Los Angeles?

Speaking of "dreams"- it brings to mind that last year’s State of the City speech given by the Mayor was heavily invested in the "dream" idea.

"Dream with me" was one phrase that stood out. And in the year since then, the word "irony" seems to fit in here nicely.

Do you think that Mayor Villaraigosa is doing his best work for the City of Los Angeles? (Some appropriate replies: "You've got to be dreaming," or, "In his dreams," and so on.)

I wonder if he will choose another rich theme for tomorrow's speech. Whatever it is, I hope he doesn't continue to deliver it in his bad imitation of the style of Martin Luther King, Jr. He is not a natural at it and all the attempts at eloquence just emphasize his air of absolute pretentiousness. This goes with the over-inflated self-image he has demonstrated over the term.

The Mayor appears to value style over substance. Instead of trying to communicate simply, he will go for the possibility that this may be some material for historical archives that people will see over and over again.

Substance is what would be appreciated, but looking at what was done over the last year, style may be all he has to work with.
