Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Thursday

I told you that one of the main reasons Richard Alarcon resigned his Assembly seat now and took the Council "caretaker" position was so that a special election could be held in May to fill the Assembly seat and get a Democrat in the spot for the budget vote. The Roundup confirms this.

Speaking of Alarcon, it was he and Tony Cardenas whose bad political deal gone all wrong that lost the San Fernando Valley Fair and got it shipped to Santa Clarita. Alarcon must be trying to make up for it as he's involved in a move to relocate the "Martial Arts History Museum" from a planned site in the 661 to somewhere in the 7th District.

If you shop at Albertson's you may find yourself having to decide to cross a picket line or not. The union that represents the chain's workers has voted to authorize a strike. If no resolution is reached by the time the contract expires around April 9th, the union will likely strike.

The patron saint of the Nanny State - Assemblyman Lloyd "The Bachelor" Levine - is at it again. He's been trying to ban lightbulbs and now he's playing interior decorator. Check it out at Mayor Sam 2.

A report by the United Way shows that Los Angeles is behind the rest of California when it comes to "quality of life." We all know the reasons why and sadly, unless some sea change occurs, Los Angeles' best days are behind it.

Rick Caruso, developer of The Grove shopping center wants to build something similar in the parking lot at Santa Anita Racetrack. You may remember Caruso as the man who allegedly said the thing many in LA would like to but don't have the guts: calling Congresswoman Maxine Waters a word that rhymes with "which." This time its not necessarily just the usual NIMBYs fighting Caruso's development but astro-turfers allegedly hired by a competing shopping center. And guess who's their consultant? Yup, this guy.

Some nutjob named Kenneth Eng wrote in AsianWeek a piece of trash called "Why I Hate Blacks." As you can imagine, this clown is getting way more attention than he deserves and the usual hand ringing is in process. African American writer Earl Ofari Hutchinson has an interesting take on the larger issues involved.

Thank you Mayor Sam for getting back to real issues and not allowing Zuma to post his dumb rants. You've lost a lot of traffic I've noticed in the last several weeks because of Zuma. The people who did post were all attacking him and Zuma replying to thsoe attacks. Let's get the smart people back here.

Rick Caruso without a doubt is one of the smartest, richest and most down to earth man. He's on several boards helping needy families and children, hospitals and so much more. I admire his guts to go after Maxine but not fair Mayor Sam to post that. He was the youngest police commissioner appointed. His board was the best because they listened to the community not like racist Mack who only listens to South LA. He's the only one who has created beautiful developments that people in this city can enjoy instead of the monstrosities in other areas.

So you're saying that the new Century City isn't better than The Grove?

Come on now...

I don't get the hostility for Levine's efforts to reduce energy consumption.

I can understand disagreeing with him on the merits -- e.g., energy savings outweighed by glare or something -- but I, for one, appreciate a legislator who is looking for concrete, cost-effective ways to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, our need to build additional power plants, etc.

One of my summer jobs during college was to study whether "weatherization," i.e., increased insulation and weather-stripping of older houses, could cost-efficiently conserve energy in colder climates. If we ever want to render the Middle East irrelevant, we need to consider things like light bulbs, insulation -- whatever.

Plus, when you compare him to the other rocket scientists up there -- like Senator No-Spank, or whoever she is -- he looks even better!

The mayor is following the money instead of doing what's best for the city.
It may all be about money. In Los Angeles, like most big cities, real estate developers are a prime source of campaign cash. Few other businesses are so directly beholden to city officials, who can make, break or reshape a project with a zoning change or environmental objection.

The latest battle could simply be a contest over whose pockets will be lined with money from downtown builders: the mayor's or council members'. It's also possible that the mayor simply doesn't want to give so much power to reshape downtown to Councilwoman Jan Perry, a sometime adversary who as downtown representative would play a large role in the air-rights transfer.

AMNESTY SCHEME ALERT:

Congressmen Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) held a conference call with reporters in which they announced their intention to introduce a "comprehensive immigration reform" (i.e. AMNESTY) bill today. Sources say at the very least the bill will contain some sort of amnesty provision for illegal aliens currently in the United States.

Call your Reps and tell them NO guest worker/amnesty.

Englander is a complete moron. Local politicians fear him and he's gets tons of payback for his sleazy work. Caruso's The Grove is far more classy and well developed then most of what we have in this city.

Walter,

The hostility is not towards saving energy. That's a great thing. The market has offered many alternatives for consumers to do that.

What I resent is the notion that government has to dictate this and protect us from ourselves. From this to the banning of trans fats to the whole global warming hysteria, liberals have adopted the mentality (and nanny state is a great term) that government must care for us.

I reject this. I think people should switch from regular bulbs to the swirly ones because they are of a higher quality, more cost effective and more energy efficient. Not becaue the government made you do it.

When they solve the crime, gang and transportation problems, they can worry about things like this.
