The Planning Commission has turned down Home Depot's bid to rennovate a former K-Mart in Sunland-Tujunga.
This follows an extensive astro-turf campaign by local businesses and unions which generally oppose chain, big box stores locating in given neighborhoods.
Insiders tell the Sister City that Home Depot's approach to the project was "sloppy" and their activities alienated the office of Councilmember Wendy Greuel who aggressively fought the project.
The retailer has the option to appeal to the Area Planning Commission and ultimately the City Council but given Greuel's opposition, its unlikely the Council would give in to Home Depot.
Coming soon to the site - the world's largest Starbucks and underwear store.

Better yet JOE B. can welcome the "DEPENDS OUTLET CENTER" to S-T.
I'm a little disappointed. I was looking forward to posting pictures of these morons shopping there after it opened.
This is an excellent example how effective grass roots efforts can be. Congratulations to all who made their voice heard.
Now Petsmart would like to open in the area and already the cast is complaining. Progress is coming. You can't stop it. If you want to live in an URBAN area, move.

Thank you, 9:34 am, but you left off a big team including Sheri S., Roberta AT, Debbi B, Elaine B, Paula W, Cindy C, and a host of others who donated money, knocked on doors, sold tee shirts, collected signatures, wrote letters, took pictures, called in violations, attended meetings, and picketed on the street in front of the PROJECT.
