Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

With the Council in recess, things kind of go slow, but lets give it a crack.

Martini Republic wonders why Councilman Tom LaBonge (or as Zuma calls him Tom LeBong) is going to get a pass for a third term and rack up enough points for a hefty city pension when all is said and done, when they feel he's done little for his district. On top of it - as LAist notes - LeBong can't even get his email to work. More reasons for the Court to toss out Prop R.

The Eastside White Guy is writing about us again. I guess he's taking delight in my change in view on identifying paid blog posts (which are really commercials) because of course they are above such activitiy. Despite begging for ads and posting lots of them, the folks at LA Voice are apparently losing money. Hmmm...

Friday night at 5:00 the Christmas tree at El Pueblo at Olvera Street will be lit. Sounds like a festive occasion and you can't beat free pan dulce. Click here for more information.

Have a good weekend.

IT's too bad no one realized how vulnerable LaBonge is. He's alienated many of his constituents by failing to really listen and hear what they want. Instead, he goes off touting his own ideas, takes credit for as much as his huge ego will allow, and sandbags those who don't agree with him. He is ripe to be voted out of office and yet no one took advantage of the opportunity. A sad state of democracy in Los Angeles.

Chavez delivers cheap oil to city’s poor
Luke Broadwater, The Examiner
Dec 7, 2006 12:00 AM

BALTIMORE - Shortly after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the U.S.’s Gulf Coast, controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez pledged to help America’s poor.

On Wednesday, he brought that pledge to Baltimore City as his Citgo Petroleum Corp. delivered discounted heating oil to Debra Henderson, a 58-year-old disabled mother.

“I appreciate this program,” Henderson said, standing outside her Baltimore City home. “I know it will help a whole lot of people who are dealing with paying for oil.”

Chavez has been an outspoken critic of President George W. Bush, even calling Bush “the devil” during a September speech at the United Nations. Some Bush supporters have said Chavez’s program is designed to embarrass Bush.

Out of curiousity, I visited the LAVoice site a few minutes ago; I must say I was not impressed. The November elections results were posted a month ago; the site still advocates voting against Proposition 90.

You're right, LAVoice does take an ersatz moral position concerning you and this site. If it truly was the "voice" of L.A., it wouldn't be slanted far left, but rather be more balanced.

For example, the site chooses to accept ads that are anti-war (see the ad on the bottom left column) which focuses upon the total monetary costs of the war in Iraq. Simple logic will state that wars cost money. Other leftist sources (not advertised on the site) will focus on the total amount of deaths suffered by American forces in the four years in Iraq (close to 3,000).

I find it reprehensible that the left wingnuts don't offer any comparative totals, but I do (Four years of Americans killed in Iraq: less than 3,000. World War II battle of Okinawa, Naval servicemen: 4,028.)

I'll not visit LAVoice again, I like this site a lot better.

Hey City Council,

Everyone wants LAUSD Boardmembers to have one shared staff, instead of individual staffs, so badly, because it's such a good idea. Then let's have MORE of a good idea:

How about a shared council staff as AB 1381 attempts to do with the LAUSD boardmembers.

Think of the savings to the taxpayer that position would create. And after all, how many Councilmembers staffers does it take to collect special interest donations and ignore constituents' community needs?

While were trying to save a big waste of taxpayer's money, how about a City Council salary rollback to about $100,00 with a 3% annual cost of living increase?

Dr. W. Edwards Deming would say, "Yes"! And ZD happens to be the City of Los Angeles' foremost expert on Deming and his methods for management of quality and productivity, so get ready, y'all.

You're gonna HATE my homeboy Dr. Deming. He's all about reducing fraud, waste and abuse from the system. (Ask "Rhodes Scholar" Eric Garcett about Demingi. I'm sure he must have learned about him, but only ZD has had articles published internationally on the topic, yall...yeah, yeah.

Slow day on this blog.

Did anyone read or flip through the DN today? Where's MAV. Not one picture! not one quote! OMG the mayor's MIA!

(Knelt in prayer position with desperate look on face) Mayor Sam, give us our daily fix!

Quote of the Day

"We have 15 council districts and 87 neighborhood councils, and at the end of the day we have to articulate a common vision.... Every neighborhood has the responsibility to bear the challenge of homelessness," Villaraigosa said, citing studies showing that contrary to residents' fears, property values do not fall, nor does crime increase when supportive housing is provided for the previously homeless."

PSYCHO HOUSE TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW HOMES Movie & Entertainment News provided by World Entertainment News Network (www.wenn.com)
2006-12-08 18:36:05 -

The house made famous by ALFRED HITCHCOCK's classic thriller PSYCHO is to be moved to make way for thousands of new homes as part of Universal Studios' redevelopment programme.
The property, where JANET LEIGH's character was murdered by ANTHONY PERKINS' NORMAN BATES in the classic 1960 movie, stands on a hill overlooking a rundown motel, and is a popular tourist attraction at Universal City in Los Angeles, California.
Also being moved is with the disaster scene from STEVEN SPIELBERG's recent WAR OF THE WORLDS.
Titled the Vision Plan by the studio giant, the $3 billion (£1.53 billion) development will build homes for 2,900 occupants, provide jobs for 11,000 people and generate $4 billion (£2.03 billion) in annual economic activity.
Los Angeles Mayor ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA says, "This is a blockbuster, a transformative project, a city-making project, and it will ensure Los Angeles remains the entertainment capital of the world.
"With a housing crisis, traffic congestion and an ever-growing population, this is the face of smart, responsible, environmentally friendly development for the future."

9:58AM,

Wow, thanks for that info (from a British news report, LOL!). ZD ain't sentimental about no movie set props. This sounds like a GREAT idea, and a lot better than prop. H. Are you saying the STUDIO is going to pay for all this affordable housing? Then Big ZD says, "Hell Yeah!" (What am I missing here, if anything?)

Zuma, the plans also indicate building additional lanes on the 134 and 101 to handle all of the increased traffic. The building of these additional lanes, according to the preliminary plans, would also be funded by Universal Studios (as reported on the 10:00 KTLA News Wednesday evening).

Ooops, I said, "affordable" when it is just "housing". I knew it didn't say "affordable" when I posted the comment, but I am so used to adding the "affordable" part. I DO like this idea, though, affordable, or expensive, beacuse it will help with density issues by allowing homes to be built where they previously weren't. (and what can be less important than old, unused hollywood props?)

Universal Studios also plans to expand their movie set lot, according to the previously cited KTLA News broadcast.

Ahoy thar, Zuma Dogg! 'Tis a fine morning to up me anchor and sail out to capture more prizes! Me crew of me vessel have had a fine time of repairing the damage done to me ship caused by the drunken landlubbers on another thread. Aye, and we had a fine time on the evening last - drinking, carousing, and chasing women!

Aye, whilst in port, ye have kept me most entertained! Indeed, I have found kindred spirits in the crew of Cap'n Sparrow!

'Twould be a fine time for me to depart with a spot of poetry, but alas, the poet within me keeps his silence!

Hist! The breeze shall change it's direction landward soon! Up anchor, mates! It's time to regain our sea legs!

Fare thee well! We're sailing for the South Seas! When at last I swallow the anchor and never sally out to whar the deep ones roll, I shall settle here in me pueblo. Mayhap, I might donate some property to me pueblo!

Vaya con Dios, mates! Ye have seen the last of me for the months to come!

Mayor Sam,
the old Yorty photo stands in contrasts with "HIS POLLONESS" flight to the "SAHARA" to turn the valve allowing water to flow into the lower OWENS RIVER. Our Green Mayor flew by "CHARTER JET" to spend one hour at the ceremony outside of Lone Pine.

The building project is not done because the Mayor wants it to be done, of course, but simply because it is going to be more profitable to do than to leave it as it is. The Mayor seems to always weave in his own personal importance when he presents things as in the news conference. He is a development oriented person.

As I understand it, "Affordable housing" really does not mean "accessible housing" but only that it is "affordable" relative to the market price as related to some statistical calculation for income in the certain population.

Any street and freeway traffic lanes, etc., added by the project will be obsolete long before completion. It's there to make it LOOK like everything is in some functional symetry. Window dressing. There are just too many people to ever balance anything out and no plan to control growth in any fashion exists. (And this is not even addressing the illegal immigration sanctuary aspect of current city policies with respect to growth.)

The overall plan sounds good but we still will have a heavy demand on all city services that don't even meet the present demand. Council should work on those issues instead of issuing self congratulations, quid pro quo proclamations, missing meetings, and wasting limited council time, all while pulling down a hefty salary with too many unsupervised perks.

Political considerations will always override real life matters, especially in this city (an observation and outlook)

how's my hair???

where's KTLA featuring me today??

what federally ordered repairs can I take credit for today? (owens valley)
this city wouldn't give a flying f*** about the owens valley unless they were ordered to by a judge. then I see the mayor's up there trying to cash in on it, like he ordered it.....lol

LA Voice really is kind of a crappy blog I have stopped reading it.

IMHO the best local blogs are this one, Martini Republic, Franklin Avenue, LA City Nerd and Here in Van Nuys. A few others are good but not consistent enough.

Hello,
Nice blog i like it
Props from the movie sets can come from a variety of sources. Often, after a film's premiere, the studio will auction off many of the props and costumes used in the film for the purpose of charity.
