The LA Times pontificates on the selection of Admiral David Brewer as the new Superintendent of the LA Unified. While the Times feels that the School Board basically acted in defiance of Mayor Villaraigosa and everyone involved with the Mayors AB 1361 take over plan, the selection of Brewer may not be a bad one in the end. Martini Republic takes a look at Proposition H, the billion dollar housing boondoggle on this November's special municipal election ballot. Given that hundreds of millions of dollars a year will be spent that will deliver a miniscule amount of new housing units, the martini drinkers say "You’re better off at Santa Anita." This gnome has the ability to detect cameras and microphones and rotate its "SMILING FACE" in the direction of the above mention devices. If the Gnome is low on power, it has a emengency device for arousal (THINK "OTTO PILOT" FROM AIRPLANE). THE "POLLO GNOME" has been missing from the local area for awhile. Scribe HELFAND can have his own BLOG where readers can opine on the adventures of the "POLLO GNOME". Please remember that the "POLLO GNOME" requires constant attention and plenty of "room temp" liquids. Plus the gnome requires periodic upgrading of "Talking Points" (ie. WE CLEAN YOUR TOLIETS!!). If Tony wanted to run the schools, he should have applied for the Supt.'s job. You know what Tony wants: Construction contract $$$!(and maybe a school named after him).
I'd like to see him "tussle" with the Admiral. If the Admiral has a contract and a supportive School Board, my money is with the Admiral.

Here at Mayor Sam, we exercise independent judgment, rather than falling for the bandwagon fallacy.
You're welcome to disagree, of course, but I hope you'll do it based on your own analysis of the text of Measure H, and not simply support a measure because it has a long list of endorsements.
Bear in mind that the people who stand to benefit from Measure H -- rich developers -- will readily spend over $1 milliion to dupe people into thinking it's good policy. By contrast, the opponents, mere taxpayers, have to work for a living, and don't have a million-dollar PR campaign.

I do have one question, and that is what will happen to Ms. Garcia upon Villabarbosa's return? Will her explaination be one of privately getting a better deal with respect to her tenure or putting a good face on a bad apple?
And what about that lawsuit? Surely all the parties have been served by now. Let's see some interrogatories and depositions! Better not let the court reporters employed in City Hall take los declarciones gravadas. Select one from the pool in the City Attorney's office.

BROWN PRIDE?? Where was the outrage when your fellow MECHISTAS would not name a new high school for Congressman Edward Roybal?? Instead they name it after a person who spend time getting "Massages" at the boneventure. GREAT ROLE MODEL fot the culture, "QUE NO"??
My mother always said that it takes all the colors working together at the same time to make the rainbow. This is the same woman who worked in the fields as a laborer to help pay for her college education and became a teacher.
If the new superintendent is open-minded, fair and inclusive then I'm willing to give him a chance not only as the parent of a Los Angeles Unified School District student, but as a voter and God willing a member of the State Assembly.
FYI - had my father's ancestors not decided to be different, his family would have come to the United States from Switzerland by way of Spain and Mexico like the majority of the family did. Instead they came here directly. So I lose out on being a Latina, but my Latin family is proud of me and supports my decision to run for the seat once held by the Mayor himself.
Pride comes from within and is color blind. Pride is also watching a student graduate...from kindergarten, junior high, high school, college, graduate school, vocational school...you name it. It's time we took pride in the achievements that our children make, no matter how large or small. I'll go out on a limb and say that the Admiral would probably agree with me.

The "GREEN SHEET" has posted a update on Admiral David Brewer "VICTORY TOUR" through the district. Sup. Brewer called on businesses and community groups to offset funding shortfalls. Admiral Brewer has received positive reviews on his two day tour of LAUSD.

Ship of Fools
Someone once said everyone can rise to their level of incompetence if given the opportunity.
The Political band wagon, in this case, is more like a ship. A ship being powered by the need for power and ego, with the force of a gale wind.
On the bridge we find our Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villarigosa. A shrewd politician who is use to getting his way in the halls of Sacramento and at home in Los Angeles. Someone whose talents extend from cleaning your toilets to brokering back room deals to go around the vote of the people and those elected to serve them.
By confusing activity with accomplishment, the Mayor has drawn to his side a crew of political activists and operatives in Sacramento and in Los Angeles. All of whom who see this as an opportunity to capitalize on, for the furthering of their own agendas.
Political operatives come in all party affiliations. In the case of AB1381, Republicans filled the backrooms with democrats and wrote hundreds of thousands of dollars of checks to see the mantel of power shift.
Operatives such as Fabian Nunez, Jackie Goldberg, Gloria Romero, AJ Duffy, and many others, not so noticeable have staked their political careers on the take over of LAUSD.
After meeting with the new LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer, it is clear the mayor’s attack carrier has become the Titanic. With only a few life preservers remaining, the crew of the Titanic must fight for a life vest or sink with the ship. This includes the skipper of the HMS LA , as it is on a collision course with the jagged cliffs of Los Angeles.
What is now clear, is that the future is very uncertain for Mayor AV and those who thought the Board of Education and the State Constitution were an easy prey.
With a battle tested Skipper at the helm of the USS LAUSD, it is “dam the torpedoes and full speed ahead“. The phrase “lead, follow or get out of the way” seems to be appropriate for the crew of the ship of fools.
Apology aside President Duffy, time to take the honorable way out and resign. It is for the good of your union members and governing councils who you ignored in that back room with Mayor AV.

Where is Jim Alger? I thought he was going to help democrats in this cycle as he claimed to be a good democrat?
He hasn't been seen at rallies, Democratic headquaters or anyplace else to help any Democrats local or statewide.
I guess his run was ALL about opportunism and not about community and the Democratic Banner.

Do you really think the Mayor and his team of operatives didn't anticipate the district would hire a superintendent? From what i eam hearing the Mayor's folks the entire time that the district would hire a Colin Powell wannabe and have already made their moves based on that.
Let me set the record straight -- Brewer does a good job -- guess whose career is helped -- the Mayor's. Brewer does a bad job guess whose career is helped - the Mayor's because he said he wanted to be part of the selection process and was denied.
