This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

He does indeed. I agree with him regarding the Mayor's takeover bid being a ploy to re-direct a big chunk of the multi-billion dollar LAUSD budget to developers.
He is also right that the other mayors would, as a practical matter, have no say in the school system. I think one could "fix" that aspect of the takeover plan the way the Founding Fathers solved the same problem with Congress.
Specifically, for the group of mayors to take action, you could require the vote of TWO majorities: i) mayors representing a majority of the population (which in this case means you would always need the vote of L.A.'s mayor); AND ii) a majority of the mayors in the group (i.e., 14 of the 26 mayors would have to agree).
That way, the Mayors' council could function more like the House and Senate combined, instead of the current plan, which is more like the House in that it's based entirely on population.

Walter, I'm sort of new to this topic and was wondering something. By what mechanism could that LAUSD money be funneled to developers - or to anyone else for that matter?

No offense . but i am findning myself less and less coming to mayor sam for inoformation , since it has become one sided .
No offense Walter. But there are more biased posts made by you than posts where people can comment on that are not biased.
I don't understand why you guys have changed into this.

Control of the budget permits one to select vendors and award them excessively lucrative contracts. Back when Hahn was building new animal shelters, for example, the construction cost per square foot was, as I recall, around $800. That, of course, is exorbitent for a private home, much less a dog pound.
Godzilla, what can I say? We'll miss you. I do not, however, understand your claim of "bias." And anyone can, of course, post whatever response he wants to set forth whatever he thinks we omit from our posts.
While we're at it, I didn't even post this story. Mayor Sam did.

Godzilla - from day one the Sister City has always been taking on City Hall. For sure, we've complimented them when something went right (wish that could happen more often), but we're the loyal opposition. However, unlike some other blogs in LA that are very observant, we allow you to take us to task, as much as you want.

It's just that the issues are the same ones over and over and over again . How many times can you comment on the same issue over and over and over again?

I've come to conclude that Eric Garcetti likes Zuma Dogg, and may even respect his political theatre.
Of course, as President, he's charged with maintaing the status quo, so he can't show it. But watching some of this clicks, Mr. President goes get a kick out of the Z man, as opposed to some of the older members of the Council who have heartburn over the greatest thing to happen to public comment.

I'm with Eric. I have a warped respect for Zuma Dogg. I'm glad he's talking.
For the new person to the topic of LAUSD budget money - how long do you think it will take before the billions of LAUSD money is absorbed into the city's general fund? Why do you think the mayor is doing this? For the children?

I didn't like Zuma Dogg at first. But then I started to really listen to what he was saying and he makes more sense then the CLOWNCIL MEMBERS. He's getting a hell of a lot of press and that scares the clowns. I hope he keeps it up. He won't need money to run for council cause he's already getting free publicity.

Zuma Dogg has already done more for L.A. in the past few months than AV has in his whole political career.
