Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

The "School Me" blog at the LA Times features the take of LAUSD board member Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte on Mayor Villaraigosa's takeover plan. LaMotte compares the Mayor's program to take over a group of mostly Black schools to the Federal government's infamous Tuskeegee Experiment.

Friday Mayor Villaraigosa and will join with members of several business groups to urge passage of AB 1381, the bill that would give him control of the LA Unified School District.

Blogger Jim Bursch, editor and founder of West LA Online, has created a new online grass roots movement, Straight Citizens for Steve Sion. Bursch is urging support for the openly gay Republican running against the openly straight Democrat Mike Feuer, the cool, calm former 5th District Councilman who still sports a circa 1978 "Jewfro."

Franklin Avenue has a memorial
to the recently departed Esther Snyder, co-founder of the famous Southern California burger chain, In 'N' Out.

LA City Nerd points out a hillside in Silverlake that could be at risk of a landslide. He recounts a landslide in 1978 that could repeat itself.

Going forward, when the City Council meets, we're going to scan the agenda for things that you might want to know about. Friday, the Council is going to consider spending $90,000 of your money to pay a consultant to help with a tax credit of $150 million for an unnamed CRA/CDD project. (Item 3) Next, they're going to issue nearly $33,000 in fee waivers for various events around the city. (Items 36 - 42)

City of LA Meetings for Friday

9:30AM - BPW: Board of Public Works
10:00AM - COUNCIL: Los Angeles City Council

LaMott likens the LAUSD takeover to the Tuskeegee Experiment.

Romer likens it to the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II.

Is there some kind of political handbook out there that says, "When in doubt, call the other guy a racist"?

How about something "old school," like discussing the potential costs and benefits, and empirical evidence from other school systems? Maybe that's too complicated....

The Mayors LAUSDs take over plan is very well planned and very complicated, with many many people involved in full agreement, both sides have many soldiers, it is not just a matter of stopping Antonio, or budgets, at this point what we have in place is just not working for enough children, there are really many people angry about the situation, how our children have been put-off, and are not the most important itme in the school system, which they should be. Why are these adults playing politics with our kids? We parents need to become more involved, vocal, write letters to your representitives, attend meetings, SPEAK OUT!!!!!!

There are no Mexicans in City Hall. People you are calling Mexicans are American. Because they do not agree with ones point of view does not make everyone Mexican, or communist. That is what America is all about "Freedom of speech".

Who cares what race the fools at City Hall are!!! The only thing that matters is that they are not doing what they were hired to do--protect, improve and provide for the citizens of Los Angeles.

There are a growing number of people of all races that are just sick and tired of being screwed over by our local government. We have been taxed to death. Our neighborhoods neglected. We've had ENOUGH!

The city council and AV just better be ready for the revolt that is coming their way. Us citizens are ready to turn our backs on "this good old boy fiesta" and vote these clowns out of office.

The real issue here is that the idiots at LAUSD and their "political consultants" have been politically outmanuvered by Team Villraigosa.

Let's be open here (unlike the LAUSD that won't even follow the Public Records Act) and put blame at the District where it belongs:

* Tom Saenz has made the District's General Counsel look like freshman lawyer he is. Does the District's GC even have a rudimentary understanding of State law?

*Marlene "I can't string a coherent argument together" Canter is the whinner that won't shut up. She has nothing knew to say nor nothing persuasive as it concerns AV's plans. She is the proverbial "the sky is falling" chicken little.

*The dim-witted "political consultants" (i.e., Darry Sragrow, Glenn Griznter and the other knuckleheads the District has hired with taxpayer money) who have been outflanked by AV at ever turn.

I could go on and on, but tack on the condecending Romer, and you understand why the District is such a mess and is getting its ass handed to them.

I hope what the papers is saying is true. That Antonio's bill has too many constitutional issues and it will not pass. Antonio was not elected to spend this much time as if he's running a campaign on the LAUSD issue. IF it passes then we can forget having a mayor of LA but instead a new superintendent of LAUSD,Antonio. 3.8 million live in this city and those endorsements don't mean shit.

Let's see which of the city "clown" members kiss ass and vote yes to support. I already see that Wendy "Groupie" Greuel is voting yes. I hope Perry, Parks, Zine, Cardenas, Zine VOTE NO. Let see who has the balls today.

Fascism, Nazism Antonio has turned Los Angeles’ Chicano Movement into a Big Brother City. How sorry I feel for the community of Lincoln Heights where parishioners of Sacred Heart Church were turned away and placed outside the Auditorium to watch a Power Point Presentation with repeated propaganda messages urging the poor populace to support the Mayor’s Plan to take over the LAUSD.

Four (4) Bus loads of outsiders were transported into the Auditorium in an attempt to make it look like the community of Lincoln Heights supported his mess. Antonio felt very confident in this stage set-up but marked these words; the community dislikes and distrusts “Vendidos” (sell outs).

Antonio Villaraigosa has wedded himself to the big developers to sellout the community and creates a fascist state where free speech is completely destroyed. How long we have waited to have one of our own, and now that we have him, he is nothing but a sell out, ruthless, cunning, clever and deceptive. He forgets that the History of Mexico is full of his type and eventually they disappear as soon as the next dictator attempts his coupe.

Before you get all "warm and fuzzy" about how the "business community" backs Villaraigosa's proposal, you may want to look at the roster of the directors L.A. Chamber of Commerce.

Here it is: http://www.lachamber.org/business/2006_BOARD_ROSTER.pdf

As you can see, these people come from GIANT companies, many if not most of which presumably want a piece of the city's $6.7 billion annual budget, and the LAUSD's $7 billion budget.

Query whether businesses that function solely in the private sector -- without receiving income or subsidies from local government -- share the Mayor's enthusiasm for a takeover.

At some point, some proponent of AV's school legislation is going to have to explain specifically how it will improve my child's education.

I have extensive experience with LAUSD, its structure and past reform efforts. I'm not intimidated by complicated measures. I've been lobbied and sat in debates with those considering support.

Everyone in the room recognizes that the bill actually does nothing to improve the situation and, in all likelihood, will do more harm than good. Secondly, I'm usually the only person in the room with a child actually enrolled in LAUSD.

The reason many, if not all, of the above organizations is supporting this is because:

1. Antonio needs a victory and is willing to deal anything to get it done. Therefore this is an opportunity to push your agenda and let something pass which will likely be shot down in the courts like several analysts have said. Besides, it only has a five year window so we can pass the problem on to someone else.

2. "At least its reform!" is the second battle cry. Anyone familiar with the District knows that countless reform efforts have been tried over the past two decades and most have hurt the District in the long run. Particularly, the lack of patience with each reform and/or the sheer multitude of reforms conducted simultaneously have created a lack of confidence in the school system itself internally. Schools have been arranged by level (Elem.,MS, etc.), by Board Member, by performance, and by cluster. School have been governed by, LEARN, Shared Governance, or Leadership Council. Audits have been performed on every branch and every budget. What's needed now is consistency and simplification of the rules and responsibilities.

Those familiar with the District know that "reform" that involves 27 Mayors, the Board of Supes, a Superintendent that answers to all of the above and the LAUSD Board, more committees at each school, a weakened LAUSD Board that is the only body elected by the voters for the sole purpose of setting LAUSD Policy, and a grand poobah (AV) who is likely only going to be around for a few years leaving the power to some unknown entity to be determined is not "reform." It's more like using leeches to cure ailments. It's different, not necessarily an advancement.

3. Saenz, et al, are promising changes to the language every meeting and groups are pledging support solely on the assurance that there issue will be addressed.

The reality is that the final language will not be adopted until the last day before submission and and the last promise is made. No one knows what's in the final draft and no one cares. Look back at No. 1 for more guidance.

What now disgusts me even more is that the campaign is now focused on trashing those against the bill. No one, literally no one, that I have spoken to really believes this is a step forward for the students. They believe it may be a step forward politically for their organization, the mayor and/or themselves to put up a flag on a hot political topic.

Therefore, I believe anyone with enough guts to state the emperor has no clothes at this time should be applauded for actually looking out for the kids.

P.S. one more thing. Whoever it is that keeps blogging about "the Mexicans" as the core problem needs to realize that they are not only hurting themselves but their cause as well. AV supporters are continually selling themselves as the greatest avenue to capture the Latino vote which, like it or not, has the greatest bloc potential, both politically and economically. Determining political action that solidifies that bloc by making broad characterizations and attacking one's heritage is counter-productive. So is determining your vote by the color of your skin.

AV is counting on our community to continue isolate political blocs that he can "rescue" from the bullies in our neighborhood just like the mob gave business owners protection from the "criminal elements." If you notice, every time AV is on the defensive in this blog some idiot pops off a racist bomb which changes the subject. Isn't that a coincidence?

What shocks the hell out of me is the Chief city analysts Gerry Miller's opinion is against this. He has not hidden agenda. Waiting to hear what goes on in council. The emperor has no clothes. I too have a child who is an LAUSD student. There, I said it. And I'll say it over and over and over again if I have to.

AB1381 is NOT in the best interests of students. I would rather see an overhaul of the Education code and some sort of measures to guarantee education funding will be spent equally and fairly among ALL schools is California. Education as a whole needs to be reformed in California, not just LAUSD.

My opponent is on record as supporting AB1381, and is supported by those who would see it succeed. Choose your candidate wisely or you will find yourself with no voice and no choice.

And for what its worth, the finger of greed is gold...not brown, white or black. This is one of those rare moments in history where it's going to take an open palm slap upside the head in order to get some folks to realize that the voters are awake and pissed off.

Does it matter what color the hand is? Who cares, as long as the slap hurts.

Oh, one more thing. Feel free to send me to Sacramento in November, ass kicking boots in hand. I'm not beholden to any special interest groups or the Republican party....haven't received money from them so I don't owe them anything.
