Pick Me! Pick Me! Garcetti Picks Authors Of Ballot Opposition to His Term Limits Measure

City Council Member Eric Garcetti chose two of the three people who applied to write the opposition to Garcetti's ballot measure to weaken term limits laws. Garcetti wants to change the laws so he and his buddies can keep their jobs 12 years rather than eight.

And yes, you read that right: the Council Member who is pushing for adoption of the ballot measure has the privilege of selecting the author of the opposition. (Wouldn't it be nice if YOU could pick who your opponents are in life?)

One of the two Garcetti chose is Jason Lyon. Lyon has a website (http://www.jasonlyon.com/slnc/), and describes himself as follows:

"Jason Lyon is a community advocate currently serving his second term on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council. He was recently appointed to the Neighborhood Council Review Commission by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He serves as the Commission’s Vice Chair. Jason is also an advisor to the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, and served on the East Los Angeles Area Planning Commission under Mayor Hahn."

The second person Garcetti chose is Jeffrey Jacobberger, who is an associate at the law firm of Howrey Simon Arnold & White, LLP, and who serves on the Mid-City West Community Council. (His profile is here: http://69.36.165.83/Board_Members_Profile.php?id=8.)

The third applicant, who will not be allowed to submit a statement on the ballot opposing the term limits proposal, is yours truly, an attorney and real estate broker named Walter Moore who ran for Mayor in 2005, and received 11,409 votes. (DOH! I hate it when I don't get picked!)

Just so we're clear: I have NOTHING bad to say about these guys at all. On the contrary, I am grateful that they stepped up to the plate to apply to write an opposition. Do I wish I had instead been picked? Of course. But that's not important; defeating this ballot measure IS. So let's get behind them, and hope they do a good job of articulating what a fraud this so-called "ethics reform" scam is. The ballot statement may be the only materials most voters read on the subject.

Oh, and by the way, Villlaraigosa, Garcetti, Weiss, Delgadillo and maybe one or two others used the news of the terrorist plot in London as an excuse to race to LAX for a photo-op, during which Villaraigosa delivered remarks not only in English, but, of course, in Spanish.

hey walter,

i think that you have been excluded because you are not afraid to tell the truth about the horrible plague of immigration we are facing. I agree with you -- deport all illegals, and don't allow any more in even if they are legal. They don't go to real churches, and don't have jobs. I'm just not as brave as you . Thank you for standing up the the politically correct police.

Nice try at disinformation.

You are not "agreeing" with me because you have not stated my position, and are instead trying to attribute insulting statements to me.

The readers of this blog are smart enough to see through your cheap trick. But do keep trying.

Actually, the best rationale for picking the other two is that, as actual elected members of Neighborhood Councils, they are arguably higher in the statutory pecking order (i.e., City Electio Code Section 346.1) than is a mere individual like me.

However, in my humble opinion, since the other two guys are NOT writing on BEHALF of those organizations, all three of us are "mere" individuals, none of whom has statutory priority over the others. Within that category, I think it would have been reasonable to let me, as a person who got 11,409 votes, write the opposition. But if you were Garcetti, why let Walter Moore write the opposition if you can avoid it?

Looks like you are trying to rewrite history, buddy, and you can't control your fellow wingers.

Remember this? http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives/2005/03/la_long_shot_ta.php

"But if Mr. Moore does emerge as one of the top vote-getters in the nonpartisan race, politicos say, it will be thanks to one issue: illegal immigration. A political newcomer on leave from his law practice, Mr. Moore, 45, is the only candidate who wants the city to become involved in deporting illegal aliens.

“As mayor, I don’t have any direct control over the border,” Mr. Moore said. “But I can stop Los Angeles from being a sanctuary city. I can turn the police loose on this problem. The city employs 50,000 people; I can make sure all of them are legal.”

His stand has earned him the cold shoulder from most of the city’s political establishment, but it has won him a passionate following among closed-border advocates. His supporters are spreading the “Moore is better” message through a grass-roots patchwork of bloggers, radio talk-show hosts and doorbell ringers.

Wacko, I can't believe you didn't just file a suit to get this thing off the ballot. The City Attorney practically wrote your brief for you. If you're so committed to the cause, use you legalismo to get this sham thing knocked off -- or at least split into two questions like it damn well ought to be.

Wearing a cowboy hat, Walter Moore, a candidate in the Los Angeles mayoral race, said he's running on a platform to deport all illegal immigrants immediately.

"The Border Patrol took action, that's how we get results," he said, referring to the sweeps. "It's not enough to get angry."

I hope that Lyons and Jacobberger realize that they should not associate with you if they want to have a career in politics, like Jason does.

I have a feeling the idiot posting all the negative Walter remarks is someone from city council who's afraid you can drum up a momentum to fight this. Good idea Walter or anyone to file a lawsuit against this. It did not go through Ethics Committee and isn't that part of charter? I think Jason is a great pick. He has tons of support citywide and knows this was done very sneaky and underhanded. Don't know much about Joe but his mom is with the League of Women Voters who wanted this ballot measure. Please, I hope he's not a momma's boy and backs down.

After going through your website...do you think ANYONE cares that you received 11,000 votes? No...no one does because thats a SHITTY turnout. Odds are that you got that amount because you put (R) next to your name.

You're a fucking gadfly and will NEVER amount to anything more than that. Oh wait...but now you run what USED to be a decent blog about the goings on at City Hall.

Jason Lyon trustworthy?????? He's just as self serving as Rocky. The only reason he opposes relaxing term limits is because he wants a seat on the city council. He's been heard talking both for and against term limits. Which is it? By the way, maybe he should do the math. He'd never win in the 13th. He'd have a better chance in the 4th district!

August 12, 2006 10:53 AM

I've heard Jason Lyon speak on both sides of the term limit also. That's because there ARE two sides. Precisely why I think he's 100% trustworthy.

I don't care if he wants to run for City Council or not. I don't live in his district. If I did, I would campaign for him. I don't care about "numbers". Who had ever even heard of Garcetti (eric and not his dad) before he ran? Right on. Nobody. But he pounded the pavement and won.

Jason - if you want to run for Council, it won't be the first time these valleyites would walk precincts for you.
