The Quiet Revolution of LA
A quiet but growing revolution is coming in the City of Los Angeles.The powers that be want to extend their term limits, tax you more and more (but not for any good purpose other than lining the pockets of their donors and special intrests) and flaunt Federal law.
For years, the "leaders" of the City of Los Angeles have depended on you ignoring what they do, and a general lack of interest in municipal affairs on the part of the public. Those days are slowly coming to an end.
Thanks to new technologies, the information can be taken directly to the people, bypassing the dinosaur news teams at Channel 2, 4, 5, 7, etc. Talkradio hosts like Doug McIntyre, Al Rantel, John & Ken and others are shining a brighter and brighter light on the shenigans at City Hall. Leaders like Walter Moore can not be discounted as well.
And a growing army of sometimes kooky, but well informed activists are camping out at City Hall, are getting under the nerve of Council members, causing them to pass certainly unconstitutional rules to limit public comment. These are not the cranky old senior citizens of yesterday, but young, hip, tech/media savvy figures who know exactly what they're doing.
Zuma Dogg, a regular public comment participant is probably the most interesting"gadfly" to come along ever. An activist from Venice, Mr. Dogg is well informed on the workings of the city, and uses theatrics and histrionics to bring his message home. I've posted two of his videos on the Sister City here and here.
Between the activists, talkradio and blogs - not to mention the Neighborhood Councils - business as usual is coming to an end at City Hall.

I have to admit Zuma Dogg is intelligent when he speaks on the issues but he needs to stop the bullshit rapping, and shennigans he does at the podium. If he dressed a little better and spoke on the issues seriously like he does one in a while he would be someone to contend with. He says he running for city council. You can see the fustration on council faces when he speaks.

When Zine recommended an "ombudsman" I really had to take a double-triple take on that request. Why not guide folks to the Neighborhood Council system? After all, Zine was one of the E&N Committee members who oversaw Neighborhood Councils.

I think you midlife commenters who like your news via KFWB News 98 are a little harsh. The point, which is understated in the Mayor's post, is convergence tech---the place where the Internet and television meet. It is empowering.
Maybe you haven't checked stats, but YouTube gets 100 million visits a day. More people are watching video on their computer, and for the age group under 25, the computer is the primary delivery channel of news. The ramifications are pretty profound, and they've already arrived---it's not ideological cant.
Of course, it will all be choked off if net neutrality fails, and you'll just get the same old providers delivering the same old news, but for now, things are pretty cool in a truly democratic sense, as is the fact that Z-Dogg and others have a fairly dependable platform.
Please, enough already about your esteemed buddy Mr. Dogg.... Free speech notwithstanding, this guy seems to simply want to make a mockery out of public involvement in the workings of government. Simply wanting to disrupt meetings, simply wanting to show off as a rapper, this does not make for an intelligent (?) indivdidual..
You can bet Zuma Dogg will announce tomorrow at council that he is getting publicity on this web site and that will piss off those clowns. Ever where I go people now are referring to city council members as losers, clowns, arrogant assholes and other negative names. Its unbelievable we have such a group representing this city. I read Marc Cooper's article in the LA Weekly, this on the heels of hearing a CTA employed candidate for State Assembly back the Mayor's proposed LAUSD reform plan at Sacred Heart on Tuesday night.
During the primary, I voted for Kevin DeLeon. I won't vote for him now. Aside from being one of the "boys", he didn't agree to campaign spending limits.
I'm really tired of being taken advantage of. Reading that article by Marc Cooper about what happened at the Democratic State Convention sealed the deal.
I agree with the poster about doing something radical and voting for the underdog. So what if she's a Republican. She's not beholden to special interest. I haven't heard racist stuff spew out of her mouth. She's not a wing nut. I would rather vote for her than Kevin, who I supported in the primary.
I won't be taken in again. I would urge all of you to vote for the underdogs in November.

Also everyone thinks its easy to judge everyone in office, however, it is an extremly difficult job, everyone wants something, you can't please them all. I would not want to be a City Councilman, or Mayor they are thankless jobs. I did work as a Treasurer for L.A. City Council Campaign a couple of times, and would suggest to Walter, stop blogging and get out there, meet people, go out among the whole city including the poor, homeless,and all of those other hundreds of thousands who will be asking for your help.

I have witnessed him speak in City Hall and he is always on Topic and even had some valid arguments when the City Attorney questioned the City Council extension of Term limits.

I think Mayor Sam is right, and has identified a trend. The internet is facilitating a novel type of information flow. Individuals, like yours truly, can peruse publicly available documents (e.g., city budgets, city attorney opinion letters), and post the essentials thereof. Members of the mainstream media can then use the information to share it with a broader audience.
The flow of information often works in the other direction, too: the mass media (e.g., the L.A. Times) publish what happens at city events, and essentially repeats politicians' press releases, which also gives us plenty of raw material with which to work.
Because of our "loosey goosey" schedules, and the fact that we have neither deadlines nor shareholders nor advertisers to please, we can present information and analysis you'll never see on local TV channels.
If you've paid any attention to the local papers and TV stations in the past few years, you can see these changes are affecting even them. Stunts like the term limits measure, and the billion-dollar bond, and the LAUSD are not getting rubber-stamped by the "opinion leaders" any more.
Now, if we can wire the Neighborhood Councils into some kind of unified force, we may really have something. . . .

He is putting on an act but is very smart and ranted on how bad Antonio's LAUSD takeover was that they should print every word. I can hardly wait for tomorrow's city council meeting. They are trying to shut him up but he'll be there and putting it to them. Who cares if Mexicans support AV, Mexicans can not vote. Americans of Mexican Culture can. So with all those thousands of people Marching it is only the ones who can vote that matter, so, with all that said, can you imagin how many white people voted for the Mayor?
AT the press conference yesterday I was shocked that Antonio had to look at speech cards to basically say "we are concerned" He doesn't have the talent to freely speak at will. Everyone notices that at every press conf. he is the only one with speech cards. It makes him look uneducated.
Of course Antonio has talent. He is the Mayor. He at least had to have some intelligent people around him. Even for choosing smart people he is intelligent. No offense intended, part of the problem is that everyone under estimates him. All of that name calling causes false hope, that does not solve anything. If you participate, learn who the players are, one may find an opportunity to make a change, if your outside looking in, it is difficult.

I'm "on the inside" and have been for some time and I know that there are a lot of competent "insiders" at City Hall who are capable of propping up anyone. I guess the line is drawn for me at whether you are seeking better government or better self-promotion. I don't need kudos in order for me to work hard as much as I appreciate competency at the top. Let's face it, AV is treating his job like a one night stand and his supporters could care less. They just want the notch on their belt.
I would say anyone seeking self promotion would not be anonymous, we would be like Walter and use our name and photograph. Walter is more like Antonio everyday. Yes, you probably do work hard, and yes everything they do is to reach higher ground, however, with a very few exceptions,which politicians are really any different. When you choose one side you always alienate the other. That is what choosing sides is all about.

It's not like I planned on showing up at city hall beyond being dragged there one time by Matt Dowd and Michael Hunt, to combine some comment time about Venice Beach. And now, here we are only four months later. Only because of other people's feedback and stories and research and support to keep showing up, one more day.
